What software do you guys use and do you know of any resources for training material?

Sony Vegas. The higher the version the better IMO.

And surprisingly there is a lot of good youtube videos that go over how to get it to format correctly for youtube upload, and how to do the effects, etc.

I've tried Pinnacle HD Studio and Adobe Elements with no avail. Both sucked compared to Vegas.

I use Final Cut Pro but aside from the fact that it's Mac only I'd say it's overkill for the average user.

You could always get Adobe Premier. I've heard lot's of good things about it and from what I've used it I can't complain. It's pretty similar to FCP so it has a bit of a learning curve but a smart guy like you should have no trouble getting over that.

Personally I think Vegas, like most things to come from Sony, is kind of half assed. It's more user friendly but that isn't always a good thing.

I've heard of some people who really like it but I never got into it.

But yeah.. youtube is great for learning just about any software these days.

I do have Adobe CS5 with Premier Pro but I haven't the slightest clue how to use it. I tried to open a movie with it and that's about as far as I got. Trying to save any editing only resulted in saving it as a project. I didn't see how to save it as a movie file type. I'm lost.

In the video world when you want to save it as a particular file type you need to export. Saving only saves the video project.

Basically here is how it works.

You load a bunch of stuff into Premier. This can be video, music, photos, etc. (btw you want to use the import function in premier to get this stuff in there).

I can't remember exactly how the UI is on premier but down on the bottom somehwere you should have your timeline. You can slice up footage/music/etc and put it together down in the timeline in the order you want it.

After you get done cutting it up and making it look the way you want you'll export the project to the file type of your choice.

I have no idea when it'd be but if I'm ever halfway out your way I'd try and show you around through it.
