Towed my brother car home from Fort Cambell Ky. The truck did awesome! 11mpg and only had to downshift her a few times. Not bad for a 6.0 Gasser with 175K on the clock.

Did great cruising at ~65 from KC to Indy, got from 12-14mpg, not bad for an automatic, V6 4x4 with 85K on the clock import.

Can anyone confirm whether or not a Jeep Cherokee (XJ) can pull a car trailer with out issues?

I know the show on Speed Channel "StuntBusters" did a "tug of war" between a brand new 2012 Dodge Ram Crew Cab vs an old Cherokee, and the Cherokee had no issue pulling the Ram around in the tug of war, so the power to tow must be there, but what about brakes and such for stopping the additional weight of a car on a trailer ?

Depends on the year and options I would think, to generic of a question. Just a quick search said anything from 3500-5000 and people have pulled a little more.

Depends on the Mods to the Jeep IMO, What receiver, ball, and how much you are towing. Would I pull 3000-4000 LBS with a Cherokee? NO. It will eat fuel since that motor is gonna be working really hard, and is gonna put a lot of stress on the frame that isn't designed to pull that much. If the jeeps lifted or has over sized tires is gonna be even worse.

Remember a Cherokee is a unibody vehicle - 5k would be Max that i recall with the right hitch, trans cooler and trailer brakes...

Stick to a light or aluminum trailer and a 3k lb or less car and it'll do fine - a friend towed his ~4k boat with his for years and never had a problem - of course this was with a 91 or 92 back in the mid and late 90's...

Do you have a brake controller? I wouldn't pull more than 3500 lbs without the controller. It really makes a huge difference being able to use the trailer brakes.

I don't mean to sound like a dick but just being honest here since you asked. Those older Cherokees don't even feel stable by their own on the highway and I wouldn't want to pull a car trailer behind one.

No worries I don't take anything said on the internet to heart, so don't worry about telling me how it is lol.

Unfortunately I don't have a trailer brake controller, trans cooler or oversized brakes or even a hitch yet, just was thinking about how to go about getting my car trailered to different drag strips since KCIR got killed and seeing the lifted XJ in a tug of war against a 2012 Ram, it got me wondering if it would be possible to tow my 2 ton Caprice or if it's not even feasible.

I wouldn't, your car on a featherlite even would be more than 6K I'd guess.

Henry I pulled 4,000 with my first Jeep (1996 Cherokee 4.0L Auto 3.55 29 spline 8.25) when it only had a 2" BB and 30" tires. I also had a tranny cooler and brake controller. Trust me when I say don't do it. Around town, maybe. Actually going some where I would not pull more then 3,000lbs max.

Back in the day when I first got into the car flipping game, I threw an ebay hitch on the back of my 97 ford ranger, 4 cylinder 5 speed and towed a few cars with it. Biggest one being an acura legend. It pulled ok, but had serious trouble going up hills from a dead stop, but it did the job. I've since upgraded to a 4.8 chevy to a 5.4 ford and now to a 5.7 chevy with a repo unit on the back...

My point is.. if i can pull a car with a 98 ranger, 4cyl, 5 spd, he can definitely pull with a cherokee.

A Ranger has a frame while a Cherokee has a unibody. Cherokee's aren't known for having real rigid ones at that. If you open the hatch while flexing it is common to crack the unibody seam in the rear. What do you think 4000-5000lbs will do to a Cherokee over time?

Ever opened the door on a cherokee while it's on a lift? Let me know how that works out lol

If you lift it even close to even it is perfectly fine... I use to do it with mine all the time. Soooo not sure what you are getting at. The only way it wouldn't be is if you had it tweaked to all shit lifting at uneven points or something.

Yeah, my jeep was on a lift and I opened the door... I was later able to close the door, after it was back on the ground.

I agree. I would never hitch a car trailer up to one of those unstable fuckers, personally...
