Buick's image re-invention campaign is well underway with the new Enclave, and especially the very solid LaCrosse, but many are still looking forward to Buick's next major product: the 2011 Buick Regal. Today Buick gave us all a taste of what's to come with two official spy shots posted to its Facebook page.

The spy shots themselves reveal little except that Buick is working hard to build hype and interest in the car in advance of its production debut. We already know the car will be very similar to the Chinese-market Buick Regal, which is itself based closely on the European Opel Insignia.

Previous photos, including one leaked from a presentation of an early prototype to U.S. dealers, depict the car as essentially the Chinese-market car with a slightly reworked front fascia and grille area. The interior is likely to vary somewhat as well, though the Chinese design influence on the new LaCrosse is seen as one of its strong points, so the U.S. car may end up very close to its Chinese-market doppelganger both inside and out.

Power for the 2011 Regal is tipped as coming from the 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder due to be added to the LaCrosse later this year, and a likely optional upgrade to the 3.0-liter V-6 also found in the LaCrosse. Whether the Regal might also get the 3.6-liter V-6 from the LaCrosse in a sort of performance variant is still up in the air. When it does arrive--sometime in late 2010--expect it to cost around $24,000 to start in order to leave room for the $27,835 base price of the LaCrosse.

For the background on the 2011 Regal's progress, check out our coverage of the car's official confirmation here.

You are right... and then for roughly the next 20 years they took a break. It seems they are making cars that are more marketed towards a younger demographic.

Buick Regal Is Back, Gets Turbocharged

http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/jalopnik/2009/11/2011_buick_regal.jpg

The Buck Regal is officially back, a re-badged Opel Insignia sporting two Ecotec four-cylinder engines including a 220HP turbo version with 29 MPG fuel economy. GM's out for mid-size entry-luxe blood with design and equipment set to turn some heads. The Buick Regal has officially returned, and the specs read like a laundry list of ways GM could build a car to make people look at Buick again. As the car is based heavily on the Opel Insignia, the Regal wears almost identical styling save the grille and badge on the nose. While the looks do impress, it's what's under the skin that's really getting us interested. The base car gets the 2.4 liter four cylinder with 182 HP and a highway fuel economy of 30 MPG while the uplevel car will have the 2.0 liter direct injected turbocharged four-banger which saw previous duty in the Cobalt SS, though tuned to a less hairy 220 HP and still delivering 29 MPG highway. Both mills have a six speed automatic transmission. The turbo model gets something we need to know more about called "Interactive Drive Control System" (IDCS) which allows four different driver-selectable suspension settings.

Inside the Regal borrows heavily from the LaCrosse's playbook, with sweeping lines, dramatic lighting, and rich textures. Seems to be finished with a bit more modern and clean flair then the LaCrosse's traditional luxury bent. We'll be seeing more of the car at the LA Auto Show but until then, check out the video, press release and official images.

LOS ANGELES – On Thursday Buick will reveal the 2011 Regal sport sedan to customers in the L.A. area. Armed with turbocharged horsepower, a driver-selectable suspension system and a firm, European-tuned chassis, it delivers a driving experience that rivals the best import sport sedans in the segment.

"The 2011 Buick Regal is like nothing you've ever experienced from this brand," said Susan Docherty, general manager of Buick GMC. "The Regal is the next chapter in Buick's transformation and will expand the portfolio to include a sport sedan."

The new Regal arrives in the second quarter of 2010, with its sights aimed squarely on competitors like the Acura TSX and Volvo S60. It has a longer wheelbase and greater trunk volume than those vehicles, along with standard features – including a six-speed automatic transmission, 18-inch wheels and OnStar – that aren't offered standard on either competitor.

The Regal's development is rooted in Germany, where the globally led engineering team created the award-winning Opel Insignia – the 2009 European Car of the Year. The Insignia has garnered more than 31 prestigious awards and is the best-selling midsize sedan in Europe. Regal will bring all of Insignia's award-winning design, technology and European-inspired performance capabilities to the American market.

The Regal has already been a success on another continent, in China. It went on sale in December 2008 and more than 64,000 Regals have been sold there. Enthusiastic customers cite its sculpted, flowing design and responsive performance as the top reasons for purchase.

Design story

The Regal's sleek design blends the sweeping silhouette and proportions of a coupe in a progressive package that suggests motion from all angles. Great attention to detail complements that aggressive styling, with tailored applications of Buick's signature design cues, such as the waterfall grille, select use of chrome trim and superior fit and finish of the exterior panels.

"Regal is all about great proportions," said John Cafaro, design director, passenger car. "For example, with the fenders flared to wrap around the tires. It's an aggressive stance that people aren't used to seeing in recent Buicks."

The car's performance-oriented spirit is also conveyed in sleek, sculpted body-side detail and aggressive headlamps that further suggest motion. At the rear, an abbreviated deck and tucked-in body panels are the hallmarks of a contemporary sport sedan, with bold taillamps and their intricate lighting elements reinforcing Regal's attention to detail. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard.

The sweeping design motif carries over to the interior, where the side panels flow uninterrupted into the instrument panel. The instruments have the look of expensive sport timepieces and are lit with ice-blue LED lights. The center stack, housing the climate and "infotainment" controls, was designed to allow for a lower, driver-centric instrument panel profile. Features such as a thick-rimmed, leather-wrapped steering wheel and firm, highly bolstered and leather-covered seats also support the sport-oriented driving experience.

"There is great design harmony between the exterior and interior," said Cafaro. "The feeling of flow and motion carries through in an engaging manner that makes you want to take the Regal out to your favorite twisting road to see what it can do."

A breakthrough interior

The Regal's finely crafted, sporty and well-appointed interior builds on the exceptional attention to detail found in the Enclave and LaCrosse, blending signature styling cues with contemporary sport sedan aesthetics.

Regal's firm, highly bolstered seats were benchmarked against the top import competitors for comfort and support, while a standard flow-through center console offers plenty of storage for passengers in the front and back.

Smart applications of technology are also hallmarks of the Regal, including details such as a multi-function controller on the center console for operation of the audio system, navigation system and the Bluetooth phone. The faceplate for the "infotainment" screen is set at a 30-degree angle to contribute to the car's flowing interior design.

A new era in Buick design is also seen in the satin metallic, piano black and new, Kibo-patterned interior trim materials. Kibo is a rich, dark, progressively grained wood that lends an international flair to the Regal.

Under the hood

Unique with its all-four-cylinder powertrain, the Regal relies on the excellent horsepower-per-liter ratio of the Ecotec engine family to deliver smart, on-demand performance that is also very efficient.

Both the standard 2.4L engine and the available 2.0L turbo use direct injection technology to optimize performance, reduce emissions and maximize fuel efficiency. The 2.4L is the same engine offered in the Buick LaCrosse, but in the smaller, lighter Regal, it delivers more agile performance. The 2.0L turbo cements the sport sedan credibility of the Regal, with on-demand power comparable to a V-6, but the inherent efficiency of a four-cylinder. To ensure responsive power across the rpm range, the 2.0L turbo uses a twin-scroll turbocharger that builds power quickly at lower rpm.

Distinct, uniquely calibrated six-speed automatic transmissions are paired with each engine. Both offer driver shift control that enhances the sporty driving feel of the Regal.

Driving experience

The chassis and structural systems were developed in Germany and give the Regal the handling and dynamics of a premium European sport sedan, as well as the quiet, refined ride and road manners expected of a Buick. The body structure is one of the most rigid in the segment, which is approximately 25-percent stiffer than the previous Regal. This solid structure supports more precise suspension tuning and a quieter ride.

A relatively long wheelbase of 107.8 inches (2738 mm) gives the Regal refined, well-balanced vehicle dynamics and supports comfortable ride tuning. Additionally, an independent MacPherson strut-type front suspension with single-path mountings and hydraulic ride bushings; a four-link independent rear suspension; hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering; and optimized four-wheel disc brakes are optimized to the capability of the individual powertrains and tailored to the expected use by drivers. Models equipped with the 2.0L turbo engine, for example, feature larger brakes.

Latest-generation electronic stability control (ESC or StabiliTrak), anti-lock brake system (ABS), and traction control system (TCS) are standard with Buick's innovative, Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) real-time damping system offered on models equipped with the 2.0L turbo powertrain.

Interactive Drive Control System

Regal's Interactive Drive Control System chassis technology (available on models with the available 2.0L turbo engine) offers enhanced vehicle stability and greater driving safety. It is designed to change the personality of the car based on the personality of the driver. A sophisticated driving mode control module continually monitors driving style utilizing yaw rate, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering wheel, throttle and vehicle speed. It defines the dynamic vehicle state, including acceleration, braking and cornering, to optimize chassis reactions. It also executes all of the IDCS driver selections.

All four dampers are electronically controlled and continuously adapt within milliseconds to the prevailing road conditions, vehicle movements and individual driving style. Chassis settings are adjustable by the driver, with Normal, Tour and Sport settings.

IDCS allows the driver to choose between three different operating modes that change the suspension settings, throttle response, shift pattern and steering sensitivity through the variable effort steering system. The three modes deliver three types of experiences:

* Normal – balanced and optimized for all driving situations
* Tour – optimized for comfort and relaxed driving on long journeys
* Sport – optimized for road holding; enthusiast driving .

Selecting "Sport" mode optimizes the car for dynamic driving, tightening the suspension and steering response and speeding up the reaction of the automatic transmission. The "Tour" mode is optimal for long-distance cruising or rough road conditions, providing an increase in comfort. "Normal" or Default Mode is the perfect all-around setting for daily commuting and city traffic. The other major benefit of Interactive Drive Control is that it automatically adapts Regal's performance settings to individual driving styles. When a driver begins to drive more aggressively it will tighten the suspension and increase steering effort and change to a more aggressive throttle response. When the vehicle senses that the driver is doing relaxed cruising, it adjusts settings for rolling smoothness and comfort.

Apart from a more rewarding driving experience, IDCS also offers safety benefits in emergency situations. For example, if an obstacle must be avoided when the car is in Tour mode, various chassis sensors convey this to the DMC and the dampers are stiffened within milliseconds, delivering greater body control.

I think it's awesome.... GM is definitely making strides in the right direction. This and the lacrosse are not grandparent mobiles anymore.

Double ding!!

:)

Anyone who has so much as SAT in a new Lacrosse would say that it is far from boring.

Wrong-wheel-drive.... Seriously? Get over the idea that ANYONE other than an enthusiast would rather drive RWD over FWD. The car drives great, and has tons of power with no torque steer. WIN.

In addition, If someone really wants RWD... and something similar to the Lacrosse... they can get a CTS... or a G35 or G8 if they are interested in performance as a key buying factor.

On topic : I am so excited for the 2.0L turbo version. I love the idea of a smaller, sporty, MATURE sports sedan... that is under the price point of cars like the G8 or the G35. I think It will be awesome!

I liked the idea of the Cobalt SS turbo sedan... With it's awesome handling, and great drivetrain, but it just didn't have the luxury and maturity I was looking for... G8 GT was too expensive... and the CTS was waaaay too expensive when equipped the way I wanted... This Regal will fit quite nicely!

How about this?

Bob Lutz drops more Buick Regal GS, high performance wagon hints

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/11/opelleader.jpg

While we were talking about the Escalade EXT launch with Susan Docherty (don't ask) during the Regal reveal at the Hollywood Palladium last week, Car & Driver's Steve Siler was pushing Maximum Bob about sportier versions of the newest Buick. Now, we heard mumblings about a new Buick Regal GS last month, but that was just dealer hearsay. Siler's report is straight from Lutz's mouth, and while he's not exactly the most reliable GM exec we've ever talked with, he does seem to have his finger on the General's performance pulse.

To summarize a bit, a 335-hp, all-wheel-drive manny-tranny version of the Regal might be coming, labeled with the legendary GS badge. There might even be a wagon version of the top of the line Regal – maybe even one with GM's eLSD torque vectoring. In fact, Lutz made it sound like GM might just import the 325-hp turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 Opel Insignia OPC Sports Tourer, crank up the boost a smidge and slap a Regal GS badge on it – which is more than totally fine with us. In fact, Siler suggests that what GM ought to do is make the tip top Regal wagon-only – sort of like the MazdaSpeed3 or WRX STI. Maybe call it the Buick Regal GSX? But like most such things involving GM these days, we'll believe it when we see it.

SlowTA

I have never been a wagon fan really, but that one is badass! I hope it comes and is priced very reasonably so that the people that actually would buy it, can buy it.

2011 Buick Regal 2.0L turbo will be offered with a 6-speed manual

This just in – the 2011 Buick Regal will be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission. During an event this morning in Michigan, the press was allowed to take the new 2011 Buick Regal for a spin. On hand was a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged Regal with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Jim Federico, the man behind the Opel Insignia and Buick Regal said that the 2.0L turbo version of the new GM sedan will be offered with a 6-speed manual shortly after it debuts in the second quarter of 2010.

When it arrives at local dealerships, the 2011 Buick Regal will be offered in two variants including a 182-hp 2.4L 4-cylinder and a 220-hp 2.4L 4-cylinder turbocharged.

Now if we can just get a 6-speed manual on a 335-hp 2.8L turbocharged V6 Buick Regal GS – we may stop complaining about the Pontiac G8 GXP being gone (okay no – we’re just kidding – we still miss the G8).

2011 Buick Regal: First Drive

http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/12/2009/11/500x_2011_buick_regal_02.jpg
The Buick Regal's back and with stellar styling and the promise of a manual transmission, it's trying to prove GM's serious about making the blue-haired brand appealing to whipper-snappers. We drove it yesterday and frankly, it's pretty good.

http://cache-foo-07.gawkerassets.com/gawker/assets/images/12/2009/11/500x_regal_002.jpg

It's November in Michigan, and that means it's cold and dreary and dark, not the most appealing time to be out driving, but when GM tosses us the keys to it's latest Buick we actually felt a twinge of excitement. Over a Buick. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's seen the accolades piled atop the Regal's twin the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia. Combined the two identical cars have racked up over thirty awards across Europe and have managed to claim top-seller status.

This is where you replay the last twenty years of General Motors history and put on your skeptic's hat. 'They'll decontent the car, turn the suspension into a squishy mess, the seats will be made of muppet soft cloth and the steering will feel like it's connected to the road through a damp rope.' This is a supposition any healthy car consumer should have, especially regarding a Buick made from an Opel. On all counts however, you'd be wrong.

The Regal in the US is different than the Korean market version in tuning only, it shares 95% of it's parts with the Insignia. Basically the changes come down to different headlights and tail lights per federal requirements, new software in the radio and navigation system, different rear view mirror glass, and all-season tires. They actually improved over the Insignia's NVH requirements, adding sound deadening material in the cabin to make it align with Buick targets.

We drove the European spec Insignia against the Regal and believe it or not, the Regal is better.

We drove Regals equipped with the 2.0 liter turbocharged inline four with both the six-speed automatic and the manual six speed. Off the line the car pulls hard with both the manual and the auto, squealing the tires through first, making use of all 220 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque on the way to a mid-seven second 0-60 MPH time. The transmissions are pretty respectable too, the manual shifts crisply and the engagement point is smooth, gears are well placed to work with the slightly heady engine and spirited driving is downright fun. The six speed auto isn't anything to sneeze at either, passing is a remarkably swift endeavor, it kicks down and away you go, pulling like a mule all the way. Steering under normal and spirited driving has an excellent on-center feel the thick-rimmed tiller has just the right weighty feel under turn-in and the car stays flat through hard sweepers. Potholes and heaves are soaked up though don't completely disappear, the car is tuned fairly stiff for a sporty communicative feel. If there's one thing we can fault in the Regal, it's the steering under hard acceleration, there is a tendency for the wheel to get light and darty, while it's not nightmarish vintage Saab-like torque steer, it's the one thing that could use improvement in the car. Did you catch that? One thing.

Everything about the car is solid, it feels overwhelmingly Germanic in nature. The build quality of the interior is on-par with modern VW's, the seats even look and feel like something out of Germany — firm, supportive, well bolstered and extraordinarily comfortable, they even have extending thigh supports. The leather is extremely high-quality but the cloth seats are nothing to sneeze at either. Buttons have a satisfying damped click, knobs are detented just right. The gauges are clear and communicative and the info center works without complaint. The car comes with all the latest gadgets like Bluetooth, satellite radio, navigation, and other widgets people seem to like. The entire layout is sculptural and quite handsome, though like the Buick LaCrosse, the sculpture results in storage that's somewhat lacking.

While we couldn't find a good place to put our camera and notepad, it didn't matter, just look at the thing, it's gorgeous. The looks which made us simultaneously jealous at the Europeans and furious at General Motors when they announced the Insignia for Europe translate to the Regal virtually unscathed. While following a train of maniac journalists through the twisty roads on the outskirts of Detroit, I regulaly found myself thinking 'Dayum! That's a good lookin' car up there.'

So let's see what we have here; A gorgeous, fun-to-drive, quick, comfortable, well-equipped American sedan built with the quality of its German competitors... and it's a Buick. Who knew?

Yeah the naming convention is one of those things that I am sure car companies look at and say "well we have the TM and all that so why not" look at Ford and the Taurus ie: with the SHO, a lot of purist are up in arms about it. I think GM will try to get the nameplate into a more modern playing field though

Regal name was changed at the last body style redo in I think 2005? Buick changed the name of not only the Regal, but the Lesabre as well. The Lacrosse and Lucerne were born. Buick did it to attract a "younger buying group". They didnt want to be known as the grandma and grandpa cars anymore. Now look at this........ 6 years later news of going back to REGAL........ I like it

Yeah the naming convention is one of those things that I am sure car companies look at and say "well we have the TM and all that so why not" look at Ford and the Taurus ie: with the SHO, a lot of purist are up in arms about it. I think GM will try to get the nameplate into a more modern playing field though

You sure about the Taurus deal :skep:

Thursday General Motors officially revealed the 2011 Buick Regal sedan (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/#) to the U.S. at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The car is essentially a rebadged Opel Insignia from the European market and has very little in the way of changes from the original canvas; a welcomed omission considering GM's previous attempts at importing Euro models to North America. Today GMI has obtained all of the sales detail regarding the new Buick, including: exterior and interior colors, standard equipment, optional equipment, 0-60 times and more. Thanks to our sources for relaying the information!

First up is the engine (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/#) information. Most of this information is not new to us, however this is the first mention (to our knowledge) of 0-60 times for the Regal.

Buick Regal GS brings performance back to TriShield brand

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/01/regalgs---01_opt.jpg

Buick has a long history of turbocharged Regals, starting back in 1978 when the first example appeared. That "personal luxury" coupe was one of the first mainstream American products to adopt exhaust-driven turbocharging to recover some of the power lost to downsized engines. Unfortunately, in the era before electronic engine management and fuel injection, those Regals weren't very good. Over the next decade, however, Buick refined these technologies, which led to the formidable GNX, supposedly the quickest production car in the world when it was introduced in 1986.

Fast forward to today and the Regal badge is back. Aside from four wheels and Buick's signature water fall grille, the new Regal has no relationship to the Regals of yore. Unlike the Eighties, when making an American car more "European" meant painting the chrome trim black and stiffening the springs, this sedan was originally developed by General Motors' European operation as the Opel Insignia. As such, it might actually appeal to those considering a BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 or Mercedes-Benz C-Class. But to really seal the deal, Buick is using the Detroit Auto Show to revive another one of its historic badges: the GS

At a sneak preview of the Regal GS, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz told us in no uncertain terms, "We are officially not announcing this today." What he meant was that the Regal GS in not yet confirmed for production. However, given that most of its components are already in production and the level of detailed information revealed, all indications say that a Regal GS will debut a few months after its lesser siblings hit the streets.

The Regal GS is based directly on the high-performance OPC version of the Opel Insignia, but instead of using the foreigner's 325-horsepower turbocharged V6, Buick is sticking with its four-cylinder-only strategy for the Regal. The GS is powered by a higher output version of the 2.0-liter direct-injected EcoTec four-cylinder that we've come to know and love in numerous GM products over the few years, with the tell-tale dual portholes on either side of its hood indicating its intentions. In this application, powertrain engineers have re-tuned the engine from its original 260 hp and 260 pound-feet of torque to 255 hp and 295 pound-feet. The GS is also equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox... in a Buick! While we tend to favor three-pedal configurations, we're confident that the GS will also be available with a self-shifting option when it arrives in showrooms.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/01/regalgs---06_opt.jpg

Back in the glory days of the GNX, turbo Regals offered plenty of capability for ramping up velocities. But when it came time to slow down or chang direction... well, when's the last time you saw a tight left-hander or chicane at your local drag strip? Being a true European sport sedan this go-'round, Buick has apparently covered all the bases when it comes to managing kinetic energy.

To convert that forward momentum into thermal energy Buick went with one of the top names in the business: Brembo. The front wheels are equipped with 14-inch cross-drilled rotors and four-pot mono-block calipers... again, on a Buick! Match it all up with 19-inch wheels wearing appropriate rubber and the GS should haul down in a hurry.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/01/regalgs---13_opt.jpghttp://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/01/regalgs---21_opt.jpghttp://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/01/regalgs---12_opt.jpg

The last time a Regal had any serious performance, the tractive effort was handled only by the car's rear axle. Since this new version is a normally front-wheel drive, having any real credibility means adding an all-wheel drive system. Fortunately, the Epsilon II platform has already been engineered for this. Using the latest edition of the Haldex-based torque vectoring system that served duty in the Saab Turbo-X, the Regal should be able to send power to the wheels that need it most and move the car in any direction the driver wants with ease.

Proper control of a performance car also requires a proper working environment for the driver. In the Regal that means a thick-rimmed steering wheel with a flattened bottom. That last bit should help ease getting in and out of the heavily bolstered Recaro thrones. (Hey GM, if a Buick Regal can sport Recaros, when will we get some better seats in the Corvette?) While ensconced, the driver can use an Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) to select different settings for the throttle response, adaptive damping, steering and shifting (presumably when equipped with an auto-box).

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/01/regalgs---05_opt.jpg

As we said, Maximum Bob made it clear that GM was officially not announcing anything yet. This is technically a concept for the moment – a show car only – but the smiles among GM staffers when talking about the GS, and the fact that the car is already engineered to go, indicates that we'll likely see the Regal GS in dealer showrooms sooner rather than later. We expect it to arrive sometime in 2011 with a price tag somewhere in the mid- to upper-$30K range.

As much as we like what we've seen of the Regal GS, however, it still doesn't help us understand exactly what kind of brand Buick is supposed to be going forward. Perhaps we can contemplate the answer while letting the brakes cool after blasting some back roads... in a Buick!

2011 Buick Regal Pricing Announced

Buick has announced the 2011 Regal will be priced from $26,995 in the United States.

Powered by a 2.4-liter Ecotec direct injected four-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower (136 kW), the Regal CXL features a six-speed automatic transmission, StabiliTrak stability control, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, the car comes nicely equipped with leather upholstery, 12-way power adjustable heated front seats, Bluetooth connectivity, iPod and USB inputs, XM Satellite Radio, and OnStar.

The range-topping Regal CXL turbo will start at $29,495. It has the aforementioned equipment and a turbocharged 2.0-liter Ecotec direct injected engine with 220 horsepower (164 kW).

Options include a navigation system, a Harman Kardon sound system, an internal 1 GB flash drive, and an Interactive Drive Control System (with 19-inch wheels). The latter option is only available on the CXL turbo and offers "three operating modes that adjust suspension, steering, throttle, transmission, and stability systems to personalize the driving experience."

Look for the naturally-aspirated Regal to start arriving in dealerships this spring, while the turbocharged model will be launched later this summer. Eventually, Buick will introduce an entry-level Regal CX for the 2012 model year.

No word yet on the market viability of the recently revealed 255 hp (190 kW) Regal GS show car.

No coupe or sport wagon Buick Regal planned, Regal GS won’t get 325-hp V6 turbo

http://www.egmcartech.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/buick_regal_gs_concept_images_main.jpg

Earlier this morning, General Motors dropped the pricing details on the 2011 Buick Regal CXL, which will start at $26,995. A couple of hours ago, Buick/GMC General Manager Brian Sweeney held a live chat on GM’s FastLane Blog, giving us info on what else GM has planned for the Regal.
One of the interesting questions Sweeney was asked was whether or not there will be a coupe or sport wagon version for the Opel Insignia based Buick Regal.
“No, but we are looking at all the different possibilities for Regal based on what’s available on this global architecture and the success of other models in global markets such as Europe and China,” Sweeney said.
Sweeney also spoke a little about the upcoming Regal GS. Asked whether GM will offer the Regal GS with the 325-hp 2.8L Turbo V6 found in the Opel Insignia OPC (AWD), he said: “At 255hp with 0-60 in less than 6 seconds we think we’re in good shape if we bring this to production.”

Buick Got Back? Insignia Wagons Mysteriously Appear In North America

http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2010/02/500x_oshawa_buick_wagons.jpg

First GM brings the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia stateside as the Buick Regal, then virtually guarantees the Regal GS, then Bob Lutz hints at a wagon and now here are Insignia Wagons hanging out with Regals around Detroit. What should we think?
http://cache-06.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2010/02/500x_oshawa_buicks__2_.jpg

First and foremost, let's just state the facts.

The Opel/Vauxhaul Insignia and Buick Regal and the Insignia Wagon are currently being built exclusively in Germany, and will be for the next calendar year.
At the end of the first year of Regal production, North American volumes will move to Oshawa Car Assembly in Oshawa, Canada.
Prior to the announcement of a US-bound Regal, that car roamed the streets free of normal camouflage, instead hiding in plain sight as an Insignia.
Bob Lutz, product planning leak machine that he is, told Car&Driver back in November they were discussing the possibility of a Regal GS and the wagon. The GS "Show Car" debuted in Detroit, no news yet on the wagon.
The Insignia Wagon has no business being in the US in these kinds of numbers without production plans. They're a European-built, European-sale vehicle only according to the current state of GM announcements.
Based on these kinds of facts, we wagon-heads have two conclusions to come to; GM is either readying a Regal Wagon for the US or they're simply torturing us with just-beyond-reach wagons. A call to Buick Communication's Michelle Bunker put ice in our pants when in no uncertain terms she said, "Buick product plans do not include a plan for a wagon at this time."

GM's been known to deny, deny, deny right until the car is unveiled, so we'll stick to wild and unfounded speculations. The world is a better place when there's still a possibility of a high-output, direct-injection, turbocharged four-cylinder, all-wheel-drive, six-speed manual transmission-equipped Regal GS Wagon.

Back on Earth, it seems GM's content to keep torturing us with unattainable wagony goodness. We did get further assurance on the pending GS though, so at least something came from this.

2012 Buick Regal GS may not get all-wheel-drive system shown in Detroit

While General Motors still hasn’t confirmed that it will offer a high-performance Buick Regal GS as a 2012 model year, the company can’t seem to be quiet about it – meaning we’re most definitely going to see the production model on roads sometime by next year (just consider it confirmed). However, some things may change on the Buick Regal GS concept we saw at that 2010 Detroit Auto Show.
According to Bob Lutz, GM’s Vice Chairman, the Buick Regal GS may not get all-wheel-drive as shown on the concept in Detroit. Lutz said that there have been numerous internal discussions about the direction of the Regal GS and that product planners are debating whether an all-wheel-drive option is worth the added cost and weight.
Click here to get prices on the 2010 Buick LaCrosse.
As for those of you still hoping that GM changes its mind and swaps the 220-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder seen in the concept with Opel Insignia OPC’s turbo V6 – don’t hold your breath.

Officially Official: Buick adds three new models

As it turns out, the rumors swirling around both the new Buick CUV and small sedan have turned out to be true. The company confirmed that by 2012, it will boast a total of three new vehicles in its lineup, including the new Regal. That leaves the remaining two slots to be filled by the likes of a small crossover built on the bones of the all-new Chevrolet Aveo as well as a small four-door based on the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze.

According to The Detroit News, you can also expect a range of other changes to hit Buick soon. General Motors is bent on reworking the brand, and as a result, it has asked dealers to refresh the exterior of dealerships and retrain sales people at the same time. Don't expect to see too many more ads to pop up during the PGA, either. Buick says that it's moving away from the golf set in order to focus advertising at places like Whole Foods, Starbucks and Ikea.

GM is hoping that the new models will allow the brand to compete in 47 percent of the current auto market. Combined with the change in advertising strategy, Buick just might be able to drop a generation or two when it comes to the average age of its customers at the same time.

But if the base models are not your flavor, do not get bent out of shape because Buick's taking it back. Yup. The GS has been officially given the green light as of several days ago.

Knowing this, we have to be realistic and understand that most buyers will not cross shop a $35,000 -- estimated -- Buick with a TSX or Sonata (http://autospies.com/news/Head-To-Head-Is-Buick-s-Freshly-Greenlit-GS-Better-Looking-Than-The-Cadillac-CTS-54619/#) for that matter. Most likely they would look at another General Motorshttp://kona.kontera.com/javascript/lib/imgs/grey_loader.gif
(http://autospies.com/news/Head-To-Head-Is-Buick-s-Freshly-Greenlit-GS-Better-Looking-Than-The-Cadillac-CTS-54619/#) product, the Cadillac CTS.

With that said, does the CTS stand up to the armed to the teeth GS?

Those Recaros are looking pretty good, if GM can get them past the US Department of Transportation....

The Buick Regal GS Is Go !

http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2010/05/500x_buick_regal_gs.jpg

GM's confirmed the Buick Regal GS is headed for production. What's this mean? In all likelihood a 255HP, high-pressure turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder, manual six-speed, Haldex AWD system and bodywork from the show car. Careful Buick, you're courting our love

YESSSSS!!!!

I've said it before... And now I am certain. I will be buying myself a Regal GS in the next couple of years.

Great looking car, inside and out. I just hope that 255hp is enough to allow to keep up with it's competition. I would imagine the GS would priced in the mid to high 30K range. If that's the case, it better offer at least low 14s and sub 6.0 0-60s or else it's going to be a hard sell for many.

If its not fast enough in stock form for ya, there's already quite a bit of aftermarket goodies for the motor. Even a tune picks up quite a bit.

He's not talking about him, specifically. He's talking about buyers, the general target market for this car.

Whether or not the engine can pick up power with a tune or mods is a moot point. These people won't care about that...the cars success or failure will be dependent on whether or not the buyers can live with a 255hp number tied to the car from the factory.

I don't see the GS being more than $34k But I guess we will see.

Hard to compete with the G sedan.... but I think this will be different enough, and get better fuel economy, so it should still sell well.

Keep in mind the majority of car buyers are not interested in the GS...

They want the $27k 2.4L model... with lots of nice luxury features, sporty all around, and hella good MPG's.... And that's something that not many manufacturers are building right now.

AS for the GS and it's performance... GM states it WILL do 0-60 in less than 6.0 seconds on their website. So I guess we will see when C&D gets their hands on it.

For any consumer that cares about performance that much, a stage GM performance kit installed at the dealership will have them over 300 HP and WAAAYY over 300 TQ and still under factory warranty. We have the Cobalt SS to thank for this. So that has the enthusiasts covered.

But for the majority of buyers in that segment, it's all about aesthetics, and the availability of a manual transmission will keep them right where they need to be I think. I also think the fuel economy will make the HP a moot point to non-enthusiasts... an economical 2.0L turbo WITH good HP numbers can appeal to alot of people. Although I think most of the non-enthusiasts will opt for the CXL turbo for under $30,000 rather than the GS.

Buick Excelle GT sedan debuts in China, U.S. version expected next year

Later this month, the all-new 2011 Buick Excelle GT sedan will hit dealer lots over in China. Ramping up for the release, Shanghai GM (http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/06/shanghai-gm-stumbles-in-08/), a joint venture between General Motors (http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/) and China's SAIC Motor Corp. (http://www.autoblog.com/search/?q=saic&invocationType=wl-auto), released these pics for us. We had some spy shots for you before (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/04/07/spy-shots-buick-excelle-gt-spotted-in-china-220-hp-2-0l-turbo/) and even brought you those daring pics of a naked Excelle GT (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/05/19/fully-exposed-buick-excelle-gt-spotted-in-china-coming-here-soo/) on the loose, but now we have the official pics.

Over in China, the Buick Excelle GT will be offered with the choice of either a 1.8-liter naturally-aspirated engine that churns out 145 horsepower or a more potent 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mill pumping out 181 hp. The Excelle GT is built on the same platform that underpins the Chevrolet Cruze (http://www.autoblog.com/model/cruze), Opel Astra (http://www.autoblog.com/search/?q=opel+astra&invocationType=wl-auto) and two-door Excelle XT (http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/30/new-buick-excelle-debuts-in-china-sedan-coming-to-america-soon/). More importantly, the Excelle GT sedan provides us with a good idea of what to expect when Buick (http://www.autoblog.com/make/buick/) releases their U.S. version sometime late next year. Reports suggest that a name change will occur before the Buick debuts here, and Verano appears to be the front-runner right now.

Following its announcement of a new $145 million investment at Orion Assembly Center (http://www.egmcartech.com/2010/10/07/gm-confirms-145-million-investment-for-orion-plant-will-build-buick-verano-there/) to built the 2012 Buick (http://www.egmcartech.com/2010/10/07/gm-teases-2012-buick-verano-launches-mini-site-but-you-can-see-the-full-verano-right-here/#) Verano, GM released a teaser and a mini site for the new compact sedan. However, the model will be the same exact vehicle as the Buick Excelle GT, which is currently sold in China.
In China, the 2011 Excelle GT is available with a choice of three powertrains (http://www.egmcartech.com/2010/10/07/gm-teases-2012-buick-verano-launches-mini-site-but-you-can-see-the-full-verano-right-here/#)including a 1.6L and 1.8L ECOTEC engines as well as a 1.6L turbocharged engine. The turbocharged engine makes 135-hp and can accelerate the car from from 0 to 62 mph in 9 seconds.
The Buick Excelle GT (as well as the Verano (http://www.egmcartech.com/2010/10/07/gm-teases-2012-buick-verano-launches-mini-site-but-you-can-see-the-full-verano-right-here/#)) is based on the same platform of the Chevrolet Cruze (http://egmcartech.com/tag/chevrolet-cruze). GM has yet to confirm any production or timing details for the Verano.

Word.

You can't be profitable if you don't re-skin and re-badge... we have been over this a million times... Each model isn't exactly the same anyhow, it gives people a little more variation than just giving every model 1,000 different trim levels.

That being said, I don't like this. The Regal is as small as we can handle from Buick here in the states. The Cruze also comes in nicer trim with a boatload of available options, so there isn't much reason for a Buick version at all...

GM Promises 2012 Buick Verano Won’t Be Chevy Cruze Clone

October 11th, 2010 Despite vowing to end the practice of badge engineering following its bankruptcy process and streamlining of brands, GM is on the verge of launching a new compact sedan under its Buick label that will essentially be a reskinned Chevrolet Cruze. The car is the upcoming 2012 Buick Verano, a teaser of which was released last week along with the announcement that production will be taking place at GM’s Orion assembly plant in Michigan. Speaking at a recent press event, GM’s North American chief, Mark Reuss, explained that the Verano won’t be mistaken for a Chevrolet Cruze due to some very noticeable features. To differentiate the Verano, Reuss revealed that it would feature a "library quiet" cabin, projector headlamps, plenty of chrome accents and an upgraded interior. The aim for GM is to attract new and younger buyers for the Buick brand as well as help further improve fleet-wide fuel economy and emissions. The expected lower pricetag of the Verano should also help attract former Pontiac and Saturn shoppers. Don’t hold your breath for the new Buick as it isn’t expected to be launched until late next year or possibly in early 2012. The good news is that Buick is also planning a compact crossover model, which will also be built at the Orion plant and share its platform with the upcoming 2012 Chevrolet Aveo. 2012 Buick Verano details and pricing leaked in dealer letter?

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/12/x12buvr0011280.jpg (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f70/survey-sent-buick-dealers-outlines-equipment-pricing-verano-compact-car-98086/#post2207569)

Following the launch of the Regal (http://autoblog.com/model/regal), Buick (http://autoblog.com/make/buick) will be introducing its next all-new model sometime in 2011. Set to launch as a 2012 model, the Verano (http://autoblog.com/tag/verano) compact will slot in beneath the Regal sedan, though we've been told on several occasions that it will not share a platform with General Motors (http://autoblog.com/make/gm)' other new small car, the Chevrolet Cruze (http://autoblog.com/model/cruze).

According to the infomongers at GM Inside News (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f70/survey-sent-buick-dealers-outlines-equipment-pricing-verano-compact-car-98086/#post2207569), the automaker recent sent a letter to its Buick dealers inviting them to participate in an order study in an attempt to gain knowledge about what pricing and trim levels would be most attractive to potential buyers. The details, available after the jump (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/02/gmi-2012-buick-verano-model-and-pricing-strategy-discussed-with/#continued), reveal that the Verano will be powered by a 2.4-liter inline-four (same as the Regal) that produces 180 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and will be initially offered in four trim levels.

If the letter is to be believed, the base Verano 1SB (the alphanumeric likely being an internal designation) is estimated to start at $20,900. From there, the 1SD model adds Bluetooth, automatic climate control and remote start, and will be priced from around $22,100. 1SG models add a power driver's seat, heated mirrors and rear park assist and should command roughly $23,300. Top-trim 1SL Veranos will have heated leather seats, premium audio, a heated steering wheel and 18-inch wheels. Expect the top-rung 1SL to retail for around $25,600, with pricing reaching as high as $26,200.

We don't expect GM to reveal official Verano specifications and pricing until closer to its launch date, with the car being officially debuting sometime in the early 2011 auto show season. Top tip, Ed!

Spy Shots: Are you the 2012 Buick LaCrosse GS?

Wherever cars are produced or tested, there will be spy photographers waiting to snap photos (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/spy+photos). Michigan is a hotbed of such activity, and one shooter's lens has just caught a white Buick LaCrosse (http://www.autoblog.com/model/lacrosse) being driven to a local fast food joint for lunch. Spying a LaCrosse wearing Michigan manufacturer plates is nothing special, but a quick glance of the wheels and brakes reveal this to be one special sled. You're looking at what we're hoping is a 2012 Buick LaCrosse GS.

While we don't know what's under the hood, we can clearly see this Buick (http://www.autoblog.com/make/buick/) is wearing the 20-inch rollers pulled from an Opel Insignia OPC (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/opel+insignia+opc). According to the photographer, the wheels are wrapped with Bridgestone Potenza summer tires size 245/40R20. Behind the wheels sit larger front rotors and calipers. We can only hope that an equally exciting engine is nestled within this LaCrosse's flanks.

It should — because at its heart, it's a Chevy Cruze wearing sound-deadening padded big-boy clothes and a vaguely European name. Sounds Italian... sorta.
There's supposed to be an embargo on information on this car until midnight, but even Buick's so nonplussed with its new baby boy for budget-minded blue-hairs, they didn't care enough to hold to it themselves. Officially Official: 2012 Buick Verano is one part Cruze, one part Regal

2012 Buick Verano – Click above for high-res image gallery

We're tempted to go ahead and call the 2012 Buick Verano (http://autoblog.com/tag/verano) a "baby Regal (http://autoblog.com/model/regal)," because the truth is, the two cars are much more alike than you might think. Since the Verano is based off of the Delta II platform (which is relatively large for what General Motors (http://autoblog.com/make/gm) calls a "compact sedan") that also underpins the Chevrolet Cruze (http://autoblog.com/model/cruze), the new Buick's dimensions are awfully close to that of the larger, Epsilon II-based Regal. What's important to note, however, is that while the Verano is Cruze-based, it uses different materials throughout the interior and has a totally different look. GM is convinced there's a market for an entry-level Buick (http://autoblog.com/make/buick) sedan, and the automaker will be showing off its latest creation at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show (http://autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show) next week.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/01/09-2012-buick-verano250opt.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2012-buick-verano/#3744639)At 181-inches long, the Verano may be just over nine inches shorter than the Regal, but it's only about two inches narrower and less than half an inch shorter in height. Buick's design language carries over nicely to the new small sedan, with the front fascia also looking a bit more like the larger LaCrosse (http://autoblog.com/model/lacrosse) sedan. The upward sloping lower character line on the sides are very similar to what we're used to on the Regal, but perhaps the most interesting design cue are the taillamps. We like the angry-looking downward slope to the taillamp design, but even after seeing this car in person at a GM backgrounder, we remain unsure if the chrome eyebrows are a tasteful addition. Stare at an image of the Verano's rump for a few moments, imagine it without the silvery garnishes, and things still look mighty fine to us. The car rides on a set of 17-inch alloy wheels, though larger 18-inch alloys are available on higher-level trims.

Like the Regal, the Verano is only available with front-wheel drive. And also like the Regal, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection lurks underhood and produces 177 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. The Cruze, meanwhile, uses different engines altogether – either a normally aspirated 1.8-liter or a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Interestingly, the Ventiports on the Verano's hood are false advertising, with six holes to suggest there's a six-cylinder engine underhood. Either way, Buick says the larger four-cylinder is estimated to achieve 22 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. To sweeten the pot, Buick also says that a turbocharged 2.0-liter four will be available after the Verano's initial launch, and while we don't have any details on this engine, we'll bet our bottom dollar that it's exactly the same one that's used in the Regal.

Inside, the interior is exactly what you'd expect of a car that is essentially the lovechild of a Cruze and Regal, with Buick-spec materials and fit-and-finish carried down into a smaller package. Even so, the Verano's cabin is only about two cubic feet less capacious than the larger Regal, and we already know that the Cruze is still plenty comfortable for four full-size adults. In addition to standard OnStar, the Verano will be available with features like push button start, dual-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel and heated leather seats.

Official pricing will surely be announced closer to the car's on-sale date near the end of 2011. If early reports (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/02/2012-buick-verano-details-and-pricing-leaked-in-dealer-letter/) are to be believed, however, expect the Verano to be priced around $21,000 for base models, going as high as $26,000 for cars with all of the trimmings. We'll have more information live from the Detroit Auto Show (http://autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show) next week, but in the meantime, check out our high-res gallery and official press release after the break (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/06/officially-official-2012-buick-verano-revealed/#continued).

It's Coming With MORE Power! Are YOU Excited For The 2012 Buick Regal GS?

http://autospies.com/images/users/Agent00R/main/regal_gs.jpg

The 2011 Buick Regal has been something else, really. It's been a tremendously impressive car all around.

I never thought I'd live to say it: I dig a Buick. Here's the scarier bit, I like the non-sport versions! And when I saw the GS making its way to production, it really caught my eye. That's because I envisioned my own Regal GS with a few simple mods and it would be awesome; however, there were some caveats:

1) Would Buick bring it over to the States with power like the Opel OPC? No.

2) Would it feature all-wheel drive (http://autospies.com/news/It-s-Coming-With-MORE-Power-Are-YOU-Excited-For-The-2012-Buick-Regal-GS-64818/#)? No.

3) Would it feature those badass Recaro seats? Still not confirmed one way or the other.

To say I was disappointed was an understatement. At least Buick has made it up somewhat by slotting in MORE power under the hood.

Now, Regal GS' will come with 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, which is the same amount of torque as a BMW M3. I am a little concerned how that will sort itself out since it's all going to the front wheels though.

Even though, in the bottom of my heart, I feel this is a compromised car I still have to give props to Buick for taking a walk on the wild side.

More importantly, what say you, Spies?

Buick's press release follows:

The 2012 Buick Regal GS, which arrives at dealerships this fall, has been SAE-certified to deliver 270 horsepower (201kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400Nm) for an estimated 0-60 mph performance of 6.7 seconds.

Regal GS's exclusive Ecotec 2.0L direct-injected turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers more torque than Acura TSX (http://autospies.com/news/It-s-Coming-With-MORE-Power-Are-YOU-Excited-For-The-2012-Buick-Regal-GS-64818/#) V-6, Audi A4 Sport, Lexus IS 250 and Volvo (http://autospies.com/news/It-s-Coming-With-MORE-Power-Are-YOU-Excited-For-The-2012-Buick-Regal-GS-64818/#)S60 T5. Torque is the twisting force that gets a vehicle moving and what the driver feels when accelerating.

"The Regal GS 2.0L turbo delivers the highest specific output of any production engine GM has ever offered, and at 135 hp per liter is the most power dense engine ever certified by SAE," said Mike Anderson, Ecotec global chief engineer and program manager. "We've been combining direct injection and variable valve timing with boosted engines since 2006, and there's no question the Regal GS turbo has the responsiveness and acceleration of some V-6s, while delivering the fuel economy you'd expect of a four-cylinder."

Ecotec 2.0L turbo highlights include direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, forged steel crankshaft, twin scroll design turbocharger and an efficient intercooler system. The peak torque of 295 lb-ft is achieved at a relatively low 2400 rpm. There is 95 percent of peak torque available between 2300 and 4900 rpm.

The GS's engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission, and gets an estimated fuel economy of 28 mpg on the highway. A six-speed automatic transmission will be available later. The entire GS powertrain is covered by a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

Further reinforcing Regal GS's performance appeal is its Interactive Drive Control System chassis technology, which delivers enhanced vehicle stability. The driver selects among three operating modes that change the suspension settings, and steering sensitivity through the variable-effort steering system. "GS" mode optimizes the car (http://autospies.com/news/It-s-Coming-With-MORE-Power-Are-YOU-Excited-For-The-2012-Buick-Regal-GS-64818/#) for dynamic driving, tightening the suspension and steering response. "Standard," or the default mode, is the setting for all-around use. "Sport" mode provides a level of performance between standard and GS modes.

Regal GS also features a four-wheel-independent suspension, with a unique High Performance Strut (HiPerStrut) front suspension design. The HiPerStrut system helps reduce torque steer and maintain negative camber during cornering to keep the all-important tire contact patch on the pavement. The driver experiences improved grip and increased cornering power, along with crisper handling, steering precision and feedback.

The four-link independent rear suspension is designed to minimize unwanted toe and camber effects during spirited driving (http://autospies.com/news/It-s-Coming-With-MORE-Power-Are-YOU-Excited-For-The-2012-Buick-Regal-GS-64818/#) maneuvers, enhancing vehicle stability and tire grip. Both front and rear dampers incorporate active Computer Damping Control, continuously changing damper characteristics in real time to maintain optimal vehicle ride comfort over varying road surfaces and profiles. More aggressive, performance-oriented damping characteristics can also be selected by the driver when choosing "Sport" or "GS" mode.

Braking power comes from a large diameter four-wheel disc brake system featuring big, four-piston Brembo front calipers for optimal feel and modulation. A standard, four-channel anti-lock brake system is tuned to reduce stopping distances over varied road surfaces and conditions. The Regal GS also features standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control with integrated, full-speed traction control.

The GS cuts a sportier stance, too, with a lower ride height than other Regal models and aggressive 19-inch, 5-Twin Spoke alloy wheels and all-season tires (20-inch, 5-Twin Spoke polished alloy wheels with performance tires are optional).

"The 2012 Regal GS is well balanced with dynamic ride and handling, powerful brakes, great acceleration and excellent fuel economy (http://autospies.com/news/It-s-Coming-With-MORE-Power-Are-YOU-Excited-For-The-2012-Buick-Regal-GS-64818/#)," said Robert Casparian, Regal product marketing manager. "And the fact that one can get such great performance (http://autospies.com/news/It-s-Coming-With-MORE-Power-Are-YOU-Excited-For-The-2012-Buick-Regal-GS-64818/#) in a gorgeous sport sedan makes it even more attractive."

One year ago, a Buick Regal (http://autoblog.com/model/regal) wagon was deemed "unlikely (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/05/07/buick-regal-five-door-possible-wagon-unlikely-w-poll/)." However, General Motors (http://autoblog.com/make/gm) is reportedly looking to expand the Regal lineup, not just with a rumored coupe (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/05/13/buick-regal-coupe-in-the-works/), but with the estate seen here. Sources within GM say that the Regal wagon could debut as early as the end of this year, making it a 2012 model year vehicle.

In addition to these live photos (note the "turbo" script on its rump), our spies are offering up a rendering (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/buick-regal-wagon-spy-shots/#4254206) of what the production version of the Regal Wagon could look like, complete with the larger 19-inch wheels from the Regal Turbo sedan. If produced, the Regal wagon would aim squarely at the recently introduced Acura TSX Sport Wagon (http://autoblog.com/model/tsx-sport-wagon).

If the Regal wagon is indeed set to debut this year, the Los Angeles Auto Show (http://autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show) is probably a safe bet. We'll keep our ears to the ground for more details in the coming months. Gallery: Buick Regal Wagon: Spy Shots (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/buick-regal-wagon-spy-shots/)
