View Full Version : Proof why it pays for a Custom Local Tune (LS3 Vette)
Customer came in for a tune......
Explained to him why its better to spend the money for a local custom tune, rather then doing mail order or a hand held tuner that you get off the internet. Well, here is the proof......
2008 LS3 Corvette (Automatic)
*91 pump gas from QT
Most mail order "tunes" that I see come in here. Are stock tunes that have ADDED timing, and leaner A/F ratios. Well, if they would have done that to this car, it would have made LESS power then stock. IT was pulling so much timing stock because of our poor gas here in KC. I had to actually take away timing and what do you know......she made more power. Fixed the A/F curve as well, and picked up the 20hp and 20ft lbs with nothing more then a little tune. (Cleaned up the shifting, and other areas as well)
(Sorry I didn't have the smoothing on when I made the graph)
* The stock run was aborted, because it was pinging so bad

Nice. Mail order tunes are horrible. Sometimes they work, most of the time they don't. I do know that your 91 octane is horrible! I had to run that in my 06 on my Cobb Stage 2 91 map and it ran like shit. The Cobb maps typical cause you to run rich which is safer to an extent.

My dream car. An 08 LS3 vett! But with a 6-speed.
My buddy has one and he got it dyno'd. Made like I think 400RWHP might have been 398 or something, need to check with him. But his is a 6-speed.

Yup.... the 6speed manual cars make more.
However, these 6pseed Auto cars will CRUSH the stick cars on the track with nothing more then a stall converter.

IS a 10 second auto vette all day long.

You wouldn't belive the tune I found on a customers car that had a tooner mess with it :nonod:
But yes I totaly agree. I'm yet to tune two vehicles that have the same parameters.

im sure if you had a car with similar mods, you could use the same base tune but still have to tweak each differently but it would be a decent starting point for the most part

Ya think.
My point was that even similar setups still end up being different than each other. I have been asked to do mail order tunes and I won't for that very reason.
90% of the tune can be the same. But that last 10% or so is more important per vehicle than the other 90%.
Sure you can get it "close" on that last 10% with copy paste from tune to tune, but that is unaccetable to me :)

Do you all work with the TwEECer at all? I have the TwEECer RT version and I am looking at where to go to get a solid tune on my SHO. I know of several SHO enthusiasts that do wonders with it but the closest one is about 3-4 hours away from here.

The hardest part form what I understand would be getting the basemap set up. Hell there are even pug and play I/O boards for MS and EECIV.
