View Full Version : Hyundai Tiburon to come back as a Honda CR-Z Hybrid competitor
http://www.egmcartech.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/hyundai_veloster_concept_wide_main.jpg
The past two days have been all about leaked brochure images of the Honda CR-Z Hybrid coupe. According to a report by Motor Trend, the axed Hyundai Tiburon may be making a come back to compete with the CR-Z in 2011. The model was confirmed today during a Hyundai press conference.
CEO John Krafcik said that the Korean automaker will introduce a sporty new coupe that will be capable of 40 mpg within two years. He said that the design of the model will be inspired by the Veloster concept that made its debut at the 2007 Seoul Auto Show. He said that around 80% of the concept’s styling will be carried over to the production model.
Power is reported to come from a 140-hp 1.6L GDI or a gasoline direct-injection engine.
The Honda CR-Z Hybrid coupe will make its North American market debut in the second half of 2010.
Spy Shots: First look at 2012 Hyundai Veloster?
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/12/veloster-1262162852.jpg
Would this, could this be the new Hyundai Veloster? A little background is in order. Way back in 2007, we first saw the oddly named, smartly proportioned Veloster concept at the Seoul Auto Show. No one was quite sure what to make of the funky, chunky little front-wheel drive coupe. A Tiburon replacement? Something else entirely? Who knew? Then word came down that the Velostar was just a concept and that was seemingly the end of it.
Fast-forward two years to February of this year. Hyundai has successfully launched both the Genesis Coupe and sedan. Rumors begin circulating that the Veloster is anything but dead. Not only that, but Hyundai is claiming that it will arrive as a 2012 model in 2011. Fast forward a little more to earlier this month, and during the state of the company address at the new Tucson launch, affable president and CEO John Krafcik tells us that Hyundai is working a new 24/7 plan – seven new models in the next twenty-four months.
Rewind a bit (sorry) to July, 2009 and Krafcik told Inside Line that not only will the Velostar be coming to a dealer near you in 2011, but that the production car will look "70-80 percent" like the concept. More importantly, he advised that the new car can be thought of as a "four-passenger CRX," a car "you can take out and wring its neck and still get good mileage. Fun and economical, with a great power-to-weight ratio." We love the sound of that. And the more competition there is for Honda's upcoming CR-Z, the better.
All that said, while we're not sure where these shots were snapped, we're pretty sure that this is indeed the new sporty Hyundai. Power will probably come from a 2.0-liter version of Hyundai's new Theta II GDI (Gas Direct Injection) engine, though we doubt it will make 198 horses like the upcoming Sonata. But hey, maybe. More likely power will be in the 150-160 horse range. Also, let's not forget that the Theta II GDI will soon come with a turbo. Can you imagine? A pint-sized, two-door MazdaSpeed3 fighter from Hyundai? We shudder to think. As for the name Veloster, we hope they call it the Tiburon, too. Hat tip to Danny P!

More Spy Shots: 2012 Hyundai Veloster... or is that Tiburon?
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/02/01-hyundai-veloster-spy-feb-630op.jpg
Earlier this year we learned that the Veloster was given the green-light by Hyundai's top brass and with an on-sale date sometime in 2011 as a 2012 model, work on Hyundai's new hatch is well underway.
Caught weathering the wintery climes, the camo-clad Veloster – or maybe more accurately, the next Tiburon – doesn't divulge much about the exterior styling, but compared to the concept, the grille has grown and the roofline's rake suggests that the hatch might be slightly small, or could possibly utilize a dual panel, clamshell-like opening.
Although a front-wheel drive configuration is assured, there's still plenty of speculation about how Hyundai plans to motivate the hatch. The smart money is on a detuned version of the automaker's new Theta II GDI (Gas Direct Injection) four-cylinder, which puts out 200 horsepower when fitted with the new Sonata. The Genesis Coupe's turbocharged four-pot could make an appearance and there's also talk of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder putting out around 140 hp in standard trim or turbocharged to bring output up to between 175 and 190 hp. Judging by the recent spate of spy shots, it's safe to assume that the Veloster/Tiburon is set to debut early next year before it goes on sale in the summer of 2011.

Another hatchback? Sweet! I love that car companies are seeing that hatchback cars are better than the average sedan.
Hyundai's Scirocco Fighter Gets Caught In The Open
Hyundai’s Veloster coupe is being put through its paces ahead of a 2011 launch and these pictures prove that little will change from the stylish 2007 concept launched at the Seoul Motor Show.
The Veloster is a radical departure from the Coupe it replaces. But cars like the VW Scirocco have injected the small coupe segment with a sense of new style that Hyundai simply has to match if it is to succeed.
Clearly visible on the test car are the suicide doors previewed on the concept which mimic those on the MINI Clubman. Hyundai has promised to cater for right-hand-drive markets, unlike the MINI.
The production car will also retain the Saab-style wraparound windscreen and tapered roofline that gave the Veloster concept such a dynamic profile. It will be sold as a 2+2 and will be around 20cm longer than a Honda CR-Z.
http://photos.autoexpress.co.uk/images/front_picture_library_UK/dir_726/car_photo_363157_7.jpg
The car will sit on a modified version of the i30’s front-wheel-drive platform. In flagship trim it will use the firm’s new 168bhp, 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine which should achieve at least 48mpg. A naturally-aspirated version will also available.
The Veloster could potentially feature the 181bhp 2.0-litre diesel from the Santa Fe making it a direct competitor to the Scirocco 2.0-litre TDI, and the firm’s new 1.7-litre common rail unit is also set to be available. UK sales are set to begin in the summer of 2011 with prices starting at around £16,000.
Hyundai Coupe fans will have to wait until the Veloster arrives to get their Korean coupe fix – the firm has not yet decided whether to bring the larger Genesis coupe to Europe. However, if it did, it would only be in limited numbers, and wouldn’t be available in the UK thanks to its left-hand-drive only layout.

Spy Shots: 2012 Hyundai Veloster sneaks out, shows off interior
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/04/hyveloster.g1.kgp.jpg
It's still cloaked in camo, but the 2012 Hyundai Veloster is beginning to shed its winter skin before its big reveal early next year. Not only has it gone green in the process, but details on its passenger side dual doors and interior are coming into focus.
As we've noted before, the Veloster (or possibly Tiburon) appears to share two different door designs – a traditional opening on the driver's side and a smaller passenger door possibly accompanied by another rear access opening.
Just as interesting as the dual doors, blistered fenders and the sloping hatch is the interior shot our spies managed to snag, showing a modern, triangular center stack with a five-inch LCD display and engine start button mounted low on the central panel. The three-spoke, small-diameter wheel has a sporting flavor to it, as do the deeply recessed gauges, and when the Veloster finally hits dealers late next year, expect Hyundai's recently announced 140 horsepower, 1.6-liter inline four to be underhood, with a turbocharged variant mated to a dual-clutch gearbox available a few months down the road.

June 8th, 2010 Last December, Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik confirmed that a new Veloster Concept-based coupe would be joining the lineup in 2011 as a 2012 model. Today, we have spyshots of a prototype undergoing further testing after this winter's harsh weather spy shots. The Veloster Coupe features the same basic proportions as the concept, from what we can tell given the heavy camouflage cladding. There are a few key differences as well, with the addition of fog lights not on the concept model, what appears to be a modified grille opening, and the presence of a B-pillar--which may be fake--not found on the concept. Power for the car will likely come from Hyundai's new family of Theta II gasoline direct-injection (GDI) four-cylinder engines, with the upcoming turbocharged variant possibly making for one hot little hatch. Transmissions are likely to include both of Hyundai's six-speed transmissions, one automatic and one manual. There has been talk as well of a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, making it a true competitor for the 2012 Ford Focus and Mazda2. Don't expect the Veloster-based car to step on the Genesis Coupe's toes, however, as it's pegged as a front-driver to replace the Tiburon, rather than as a completely focused sports car. Accordingly, pricing will span the $16,000-$24,000 range, slotting in just below the Genesis Coupe's ambit. We'll keep you updated with the latest spy shots and details as they break, but in the mean time, pore over the pics and decide for yourself what they reveal. Spy Shots: 2012 Hyundai Veloster Testing Alongside Volkswagen Scirocco
[/URL]
June 9th, 2010 They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and looking at prototypes of the upcoming 2012 Hyundai Veloster sports coupe alongside the Volkswagen Scirocco we can only surmise that Hyundai must really, really like Volkswagen's design work. Hyundai isn’t keeping quiet about its future product line, with the company’s U.S. chief previously revealing details about upcoming hybrid and electric vehicle plans and now details about the replacement for the Tiburon. Hyundai also isn’t hiding the fact that the Scirocco will be the prime target for the new Tiburon replacement. Speaking previously, Hyundai exec John Krafcik confirmed that a new compact sports car will be released by the end of 2011 and that a name is yet to be picked though Veloster and even Tiburon are being considered. The comments contradict earlier speculation that the Tiburon was being scrapped in favor of the current Genesis Coupe. Instead the two models will be going after different market segments, with the Tiburon replacement to be positioned below the last model. Krafcik explained that the latest model "will have a lower price point, kind of eco sport positioning, where it is not going to be all about performance." Repositioning the car will ensure that Hyundai won’t be cannibalizing its own sales by having two similar cars, the Tiburon replacement and the Genesis Coupe, in similar segments. As for the styling of the new model, Krafcik revealed designers will be looking to the Veloster concept shown at 2007's Seoul Auto Show for inspiration and that 70-80 percent of the concept car's lines may transfer to the production version. The design briefing will focus around making the replacement Tiburon "very stylish", as well as "very fuel efficient," he explained. Power will likely come from Hyundai's new family of Theta II gasoline direct-injection (GDI) four-cylinder engines, with a planned turbocharged variant possibly making for one hot little hatch. Expect output to range from about 140 to 200 horsepower. Transmissions are likely to include both of Hyundai's six-speed transmissions, one automatic and one manual. There has been talk as well of a six-speed dual clutch transmission, making it a true competitor for the Scirocco. For all those readers lamenting Volkswagen’s decision not to bring the Scirocco over to U.S. soil, Hyundai may have the next best thing though we'll have to wait at least another year for it to arrive in showrooms. Look out for a world debut of the car at this October's 2010 Paris Auto Show, meanwhile. The only decent cars that GM has come out with besides the Vette, is the new Regal and the G8, and that is only because they are borrowed from other countries.

Yup, if you have to kill off brands to stay in business, that just means that you have too many product line extensions. Seriously why build 4 versions of the same damn car. At the end of the day it is pretty fucking retard when there are subtle to no changes and price variances all over the fucking place .

At a media breakfast in Los Angeles this morning, Hyundai (http://www.autoblog.com/make/hyundai/) Motor America president John Krafcik let slip that the Korean automaker expects to breach the 40 miles-per-gallon barrier with its forthcoming small sports coupe. Conveniently, if they can reach that performance target, that would best the new 2011 Honda CR-Z (http://www.autoblog.com/model/cr-z), which, despite its hybrid powertrain, achieves just 36/39 city/highway when equipped with a CVT and 31/37 with a manual gearbox. The as-yet-unnamed Hyundai coupe (the nameplates Veloster (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/04/26/spy-shots-2012-hyundai-veloster-sneaks-out-shows-off-interior/) and Tiburon (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Tiburon/) are still up for discussion) will achieve those figures with a conventional four-cylinder engine, eschewing the added cost, complexity and weight of a gas-electric system.
Likening the forthcoming model to a long-distance runner, Krafcik promises that not only will this Hyundai best the Honda (http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda/) in fuel economy, it will also deliver better performance as well as added utility (read: rear seats and better access). Given that it won't have the cost penalty of a hybrid drivetrain (a 140-horsepower, 1.6-liter engine is expected (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/04/26/videos-hyundai-shows-off-direct-injected-v6-four-cylinder-eig/)), we'd be surprised if it doesn't come in at a lower price-point, as well.
In addition to sipping gas, Krafcik emphasized to Autoblog that a key mission for the affordable coupe will be enticing the world's young and increasingly auto-ambivalent consumers with additional technology – all Velosters will come with a large screen on the dashboard as standard equipment, presumably to manage connectivity features in addition to more traditional vehicle functions.
With 40 mpg practicality and superior utility, it would appear that the Veloster not only has a shot at taking on Honda's CR-Z, but also more conventional economy cars like the Ford Fiesta (http://www.autoblog.com/model/fiesta), perhaps trading a bit of practicality in favor of edgier coupe styling and (hopefully) greater performance.

Same here. I loved the i30 two years ago when I first saw it out here and I love it just as much now. I think Hyundai is getting somewhere with their hatchbacks and this is no exception. Awaiting official photos.

The Elantra wagon is nice, I am not sure how well it is selling here in the states though, I think this will be a nice fit with the lineup

We’ve joked before (http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2009/08/spy-photos-2011-lincoln-mkx-in-chicago.html) that automakers shouldn't drive by Cars.com HQ in a test car they don’t want photographed. Besides the hundreds of employees here with camera phones (thanks to our own Jacque Harper for these), there are also thousands of tourists here this week for Taste of Chicago and the Sears Willis Tower.
Using our keen intellect and observational skills, this looks like a Hyundai to us. The wheels give it away because they seem to be those used on the 2010 Hyundai Tucson Limited trim. The grille, even under the cladding, also looks like a Hyundai. But the huge fenders up front are the only thing throwing us off and making us think perhaps it’s a Subaru.
What do you think? Could this be the next Hyundai Elantra Touring? Or is it the Veloster two-door hatch? Or something else altogether?
There are three more images of the car below and one of the Hyundai Tucson and Veloster concept.

Hyundai’s new sporty coupe to make U.S. debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show
http://4wheelsnews.com/images/2010/july/hyundai/veloster-concept/hyundai_veloster_concept.jpg (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/hyundais-new-sporty-coupe-to-make-us-debut-at-the-2011-detroit-auto-show/)A Motor Trend report, which cited sources, confirmed that Hyundai’s sporty front-drive coupe (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/hyundais-new-sporty-coupe-to-make-us-debut-at-the-2011-detroit-auto-show/#) based on its Veloster concept will debut in the US this January at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.
Soon after its debut, Hyundai (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/category/automakers/hyundai/) will draw up plans for the new car to race. Before making an appearance at the Paris Motor Show this October, it is expected to appear in Hyundai’s home market of South Korea later this year. The production car is expected to start selling in the US in the fall of 2011 as a 2012 model. This new coupe (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/hyundais-new-sporty-coupe-to-make-us-debut-at-the-2011-detroit-auto-show/#) was actually first showcased as the HND-3 Veloster Concept at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show.
Since then, the car (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/hyundais-new-sporty-coupe-to-make-us-debut-at-the-2011-detroit-auto-show/#) had been seen testing many times and people speculated on what it would be named. To date, a name has not yet been finalized but the sources confirmed that it won’t carry the Veloster name. Some reports suggest that it may take on the Tiburon name since they have similar missions.
The production version is expected to keep much of the styling of the Veloster concept, including its shooting brake greenhouse. It’s expected that the 2+2 will be front wheel-drive only and will be powered with a new direct-injected 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that can deliver 140hp ad will probably come with a manual transmission. There’s a possibility that Hyundai’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder or its new 2.0-liter turbo will be powering this model. Currently, Hyundai aims to get more than 40 mpg (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/hyundais-new-sporty-coupe-to-make-us-debut-at-the-2011-detroit-auto-show/#) from the 1.6-liter engine, making it comparable to the new Honda CR-Z without the aid of a hybrid system.

Our ever-vigilant long-lens warriors have managed to snag a passel of photos of the new Honda CR-Z (http://www.autoblog.com/model/cr-z) fighter from Hyundai (http://www.autoblog.com/make/hyundai/). The little hatch has shed a portion of the camouflage we've seen in previous spy photos, giving us a clear look at some of the three-door's (or is that four-door's? (http://blogs.insideline.com/straightline/2010/04/2012-hyundai-veloster-to-get-rear-access-door.html)) sheetmetal. Near as we can tell, the compact has kept the reverse-sloping roof of the concept car (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/08/report-hyundai-veloster-to-debut-at-paris-motor-show/), and while that's bound make rear headroom a hot commodity, it also gives the Veloster a tie-in with the Kia Soul (http://www.autoblog.com/model/soul) – its corporate cousin once removed.
Unfortunately, we didn't get an updated look at the car's interior, but it would surprise us to see anything changed from the last time our spy photographers got up close and personal (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/04/26/spy-shots-2012-hyundai-veloster-sneaks-out-shows-off-interior/) with the newest Hyundai on the Veloster – and there's still some mystery about what kind of door mechanism is fitted on the passenger side.
With news that the Korean automaker has pledged to spank the CR-Z hybrid in the fuel economy game without shouldering the added cost, weight and complexity of a hybrid system, we can't wait to get our grubby little journo hands on the Veloster. Word on the web is that the car will be powered by an efficient 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine churning out around 140-160 horsepower.

Hyundai (http://autoblog.com/make/hyundai)'s new Veloster (http://autoblog.com/tag/veloster) sports coupe (or is that Tiburon or something else (http://autoblog.com/tag/tiburon)?) aims to write another chapter in the book of Hyundai's relentless pursuit of market share when it launches next year, and in this latest video (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/13/spy-video-hyundai-veloster-hits-the-road-with-vw-scirocco/), we see a still heavily camouflaged prototype running around with the likes of the Volkswagen Scirocco (http://autoblog.com/tag/scirocco) – a similarly sized sportster. Thanks for the Euro-spec comparison test idea, Hyundai.
The Veloster aims to best Stateside competitors like the Honda CR-Z (http://autoblog.com/model/cr-z) in terms of fuel economy, and Hyundai is on record (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/21/hyundai-pledges-to-hit-40-mpg-with-2012-veloster-beat-out-honda/) as saying that the new coupe should achieve more than 40 miles per gallon without any sort of hybrid powertrain. It's expected that Hyundai will have its new 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood, and we hope that the end result is a car that's not only efficient, but truly fun to drive.
Hit the jump (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/13/spy-video-hyundai-veloster-hits-the-road-with-vw-scirocco/#continued) to see Hyundai's sporty prototype out on the street.

The only decent cars that GM has come out with besides the Vette, is the new Regal and the G8, and that is only because they are borrowed from other countries.
I bet they wish they would have thought of that complex outlook. Probably coulda saved 'em.
First shown in concept form at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, the Veloster is expected to appear in production form with a style as unique as the concept itself.
Now, according to sources at Autocar, Hyundai (http://www.leftlanenews.com/hyundai.htm) is planning a reveal for the production Veloster at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.
What we know so far
Our previous spy shots showed the Veloster testing alongside the VW Scirocco — cementing Hyundai’s intended competition — with the latest shots showing off the Veloster’s interior. Previous shots showed that the Veloster’s driver’s door is slightly longer than the passenger’s side door, indicating a small rear-hinged door — a la the MINI Clubman (http://www.leftlanenews.com/hyundai-veloster.html#) — for easier rear seat access, and our latest shots seem to support that theory. Now, our latest spy images have confirmed the existence of the extra door.
According to Hyundai America CEO John Krafcik, the production version of the Veloster should retain between 70-80 percent of the design language laid out by the show car.
Although this yet-to-be-named (for production purposes) vehicle is going to be filling shoes similar to that of the now defunct Hyundai Tiburon (http://www.leftlanenews.com/hyundai-tiburon-2011.html), it will likely receive a new name – possibly even retaining the Veloster concept car’s name.
Krafcik has also indicated that the new coupe will be a cheaper, fuel efficient, stylish sibling to the more overtly performance-oriented Genesis coupe. We expect the production car to feature a 140 horsepower 1.6-liter 4 cylinder engine (http://www.leftlanenews.com/hyundai-veloster.html#) capable of something just north of 40 mpg for the standard powerplant – with the possibility for either a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or 2.0-liter GDI four-cylinder engine rated around 200 horsepower for the range-topping premium offering.
Pricing (http://www.leftlanenews.com/hyundai-veloster.html#) is expected to come in several thousand lower than the previous small sport offering from Hyundai, the Tiburon, at around $15,000 base.
Of course, be sure to check back with Leftlane as we cover the La Auto Show live.
Spy Shots: 2012 Hyundai Veloster
September 3rd, 2010 Last December, Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik confirmed that a new Veloster Concept-based coupe would be joining the lineup in 2011 as a 2012 model and serve as the replacement for the previous Tiburon. Today, we have new spy shots of a prototype undergoing further testing ahead of its reveal pegged for later this year, or possibly early next. One of the car’s prime targets will be Volkswagen’s stylish Scirocco coupe, which from these latest spy shots we can clearly see a lot of similarities. The two have even been seen testing together. For all those readers lamenting Volkswagen’s decision not to bring the Scirocco over to U.S. soil, Hyundai may have the next best thing though we'll have to wait at least another year for it to arrive in showrooms. http://images.thecarconnection.com/med/2012-hyundai-veloster-spy-shots_100320904_m.jpg (http://www.motorauthority.com/pictures/1042814_spy-shots-2012-hyundai-veloster_gallery-1#100320904)

There has been talk as well of a six-speed dual clutch transmission (http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1042814_spy-shots-2012-hyundai-veloster#), making it a true competitor for the Scirocco.
One of the car’s prime targets will be Volkswagen’s stylish Scirocco coupe, which from these latest spy shots we can clearly see a lot of similarities. The two have even been seen testing together (http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1044539_spy-shots-2012-hyundai-veloster-testing-alongside-volkswagen-scirocco). For all those readers lamenting Volkswagen’s decision not to bring the Scirocco over to U.S. soil, Hyundai may have the next best thing though we'll have to wait at least another year for it to arrive in showrooms.
2012 Hyundai Veloster Delayed Yet Again
October 13th, 2010 Hyundai's front-drive sporty 40-mpg wundercar is having a hard time making it to production. First tipped to make its production debut in Paris this year, it didn't make the show. Then it was expected at Los Angeles, and Hyundai said that wouldn't happen either. Now it looks like it might not even make its November, 2011 launch in its home market. The new target date? January 2011. That means it's a candidate for the Detroit Auto Show, particularly if production in Korea actually gets going in December, as the new reports indicate. Accoding to the report, the official reason for the delay is to stagger the Veloster's launch with the Korean launches of the Accent and Azera, due in November and December, respectively. Whenever the Veloster finally arrives it will be packing a 1.6-liter four-cylinder rated at 140 horsepower. That should be enough to deliver some punch, while still sipping at the rate of 40 mpg. Those who want a little more kick may get a dual-clutch-optional, 200-horsepower version as well, though that hasn't been confirmed. Hot hatches is where its at.
I agree jason, the american car consumer isnt fully on board with the hatch yet. slowly getting there though.
europe has some GREAT hatches.
this one looks like it could be decent, but i think it will be underpowered for where it could be, just to appease the mpg freaks.
WHO CARES THAT IT GETS 40 MPG! Make it get 30 and put the v6 or a 2.0T in it!
I think as a Tiburon replacement and for the cars that it will compete against in the US it works also this is the 1st year so there is always room for different engines in the future (same for other vehicles in the Hyundai family)

thats what i mean though, across the board with the cars it will compete with.
"oh you can do 38mpg? well I CAN DO 40!!!!"
And ignorant consumers eat that shit up.
a car could be absolute garbage but if they can advertise a couple more mpg than another car they will get it. even though a couple mpg is negligible in actual impact. they dont care.
yeah, sure, if a car gets 10mpg and another one gets 40mpg then duh. but just a couple mpg? come on...
:lolg: yeah it is going to always be like that
Hyundai has positioned this to compete with the CRZ so Honda came out made some claims Hyundai just wants to one up them.

Our gadget-filled world means we almost always have a camera at the ready. Reader James W. was out and about on the highways of Southern California when he spied a camo-clad Hyundai on the move. With his iPhone 3GS at hand, he was able to snap a few photos of what appears to be the upcoming 2012 Hyundai Veloster (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/veloster).
The wheels and most of the lines match a set of spy photos we posted earlier (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/06/spy-shots-clearest-look-yet-at-the-2012-hyundai-veloster/) in the year, with the exception of the large bulge on the roof, which could very possibly be just the wind yanking on all that black camo. In any case, Hyundai is clearly working hard to hide the design of the rear half of the car, which makes us wonder about that much-speculated rear-access door even more. Thanks for the photos, James W!

Hyundai confirms 2012 Veloster for Detroit, Accent for New York

During a media briefing this week, Hyundai (http://autoblog.com/make/hyundai) officials confirmed that its highly anticipated Veloster (http://autoblog.com/tag/veloster) hatchback (name subject to change...) will debut at the Detroit Auto Show (http://autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show) in January. This comes as no surprise, since the car was originally rumored to debut at the Paris Motor Show (http://autoblog.com/category/paris-motor-show) earlier this year or possibly at next week's LA Auto Show (http://autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show).
Hyundai has yet to confirm what will power the sporty little hatch, but based on what we learned during a powertrain deep-dive we attended, we're pretty certain that the automaker's new 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder engine will be found underhood. With the help of direct injection, this engine is estimated to produce 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque while still returning at least 40 mpg on the highway. It will also be mated to a new six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
In not-as-sporty news, Hyundai also revealed that the upcoming 2012 Accent (http://autoblog.com/model/accent) will make its public debut at the New York Auto Show (http://autoblog.com/tag/new+york+auto+show) this spring. Once again, mum's the word on what to expect in terms of powertrain, equipment levels and pricing, but we do know that the Accent is expected to achieve 42 mpg highway when it debuts.

damn, i really hope they do a boosted version or a v6 version. 138hp just isnt enough imo.
they need to do a 200hp or 250hp version.

New Hyundai Veloster details
Korean firm gives Auto Express the lowdown on its stylish 2+2 coupe, complete with crazy 2+1 doors.

Auto Express Car Reviews
By Tom Phillips
Hyundai is set to serve up a new niche when the Veloster makes its debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January. The firm claims the new car (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/260893/new_hyundai_veloster_details.html#) will be the first “utility coupe” when it hits the road next year.
The Veloster was first shown as a concept (pictured) at Hyundai’s home Motor Show in Seoul in 2007. Hyundai had no plans to put the car into production, but such was the favourable reaction, the Veloster will be built, and Auto Express has had a sneak peak at the finished article.
Details from the original showstopper, including the sculpted bonnet, striking LED head and taillights and blacked-out A-pillars are all carried over. But the big news is that Hyundai has decided to greenlight the unique 2+1 door layout. On UK cars, the driver’s door is elongated, like that of a normal three-door hatchback, but on the passenger side, there are two, conventionally-hinged doors, with the rear aiding access to the back seats.
The interior as been cleverly packaged to liberate decent cabin space and a large, deep boot, while the design has been created very much with a younger audience in mind.
To that end, the centre console is dominated by a seven-inch touchscreen display which can be connected to a whole host of devices ranging from iPods to PlayStations, while the stereo will also feature Gracenote database access to your music is named and organised in the same way as Apple’s iTunes music store.
The Veloster has been developed under the codename FS, and is built on a modified version of the Cee’d’s front-wheel drive platform. Entry-level cars are powered by a 138bhp 1.6-litre direct injection petrol engine, with flagship models getting a 205bhp turbo version of the same engine. The car will also debut Hyundai’s six-speed twin clutch gearbox, which ups efficiency by 5 per cent and acceleration by up to seven per cent over the standard six-speed manual.
Prices are yet to be confirmed, but the car is aimed at buyers of the Renault Megane Coupe (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/firstdrives/230646/renault_megane_coupe_20_tce_180.html) and VW Scirocco so expect a starting price of around £19,000. Production of UK cars begins in August 2011 so expect the first cars to arrive by the end of the year. The lower powered engine arrives first, with the turbo coming in late 2012.

Video: Hyundai Teases Veloster Before 2011 Detroit Show
December 22nd, 2010 If you're hankering for some Hyundai-badged, direct-injected, dual-clutched, three-door, front-drive coupe/hatch action, you'll be on the edge of your seat until the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. The Veloster, around in concept form since 2007, will finally make its production debut. Expected as a 2012 model, the car will get a first for Hyundai: its own dual-clutch gearbox. Think that's a bit of an odd add-on for a pint-sized front-drive coupe/hatch? Not so much when you consider it's likely targeting fuel economy as much as sporty driving, teasing a 40 mpg rating in the video below. Ford's Fiesta takes a similar path to the same end result, so it's not exactly uncharted territory. Beyond that, we've spied the Veloster in its own Technical Center (above), spotted it out and about during testing, and even seen some preview facts from leaked online sources. Hyundai will also be adding to the trickle of information at its Veloster preview site as the show draws nearer. [Hyundai]

Hyundai teases Veloster one more time, third rear door revealed

Let the speculation end: The 2012 Hyundai Veloster (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/22/hyundai-sports-coupe-officially-named-veloster-new-teaser-vid-a/) will have three conventional forward-hinged doors. We also know the Veloster will have a direct-injected engine (we're pretty sure it will displace 1.6 liters), an available dual-clutch gearbox, hit an estimated 40 miles per gallon and will come with Bluetooth connectivity.
Also, note the split rear glass of the open rear hatchback, a similar arrangement to the Toyota Prius (http://www.autoblog.com/model/prius) and Honda CR-Z (http://www.autoblog.com/model/cr-z), among others. Clearly, Hyundai (http://www.autoblog.com/make/hyundai/) hasn't spilled all its beans just yet, so we'll just have to wait until the start of the Detroit Auto Show (http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/) this Monday, January 10 for the full reveal. In the meantime, feel free to continue the speculation in Comments.
The SPIES Get A CLOSER Look At The 2012 Hyundai Veloster's Interior
It was only yesterday that Hyundai (http://autospies.com/news/The-SPIES-Get-A-CLOSER-Look-At-The-2012-Hyundai-Veloster-s-Interior-60637/#) released one teaser image of the all-new 2012 Hyundai Veloster.
Now we know a couple of things:
1) It will feature an asymmetrical design, which has a third door for the backseat (http://autospies.com/news/The-SPIES-Get-A-CLOSER-Look-At-The-2012-Hyundai-Veloster-s-Interior-60637/#) on the passenger side
2) It will have a split-window hatch as seen on hybrids like the Toyota Prius (http://autospies.com/news/The-SPIES-Get-A-CLOSER-Look-At-The-2012-Hyundai-Veloster-s-Interior-60637/#)
But that wasn't good enough for Agent 001 who took the liberty to blow up the image, specifically in its center console and shifter area.
We suggest taking a look at the modified image down below to get an idea of the center stack; however, the intriguing piece is the shifter. Note: it has a leather boot (http://autospies.com/news/The-SPIES-Get-A-CLOSER-Look-At-The-2012-Hyundai-Veloster-s-Interior-60637/#).
Judging from the shifter, should we be looking forward to manual transmission (http://autospies.com/news/The-SPIES-Get-A-CLOSER-Look-At-The-2012-Hyundai-Veloster-s-Interior-60637/#) or a dual-clutch gearbox? Perhaps both?
Recent speculation has suggested that a dual-clutch (http://autospies.com/news/The-SPIES-Get-A-CLOSER-Look-At-The-2012-Hyundai-Veloster-s-Interior-60637/#) is in order for the Veloster; however, we cannot confirm nor deny that as Hyundai has its lips sealed. Looks like we'll have to wait until Jan. 10 to find out the deal on Hyundai's CR-Z fighter.

This near-production 2012 Hyundai Veloster (http://jalopnik.com/tag/hyundaiveloster/) is a curious front-wheel-drive hatchback, offering three full hinged doors (one driverside, two passenger side) and one rear liftgate in a design incorporating the aggressive new corporate nose of the new Sonata and European i40 Wagon (http://worldwide.hyundai.com/company-overview/news-view.aspx?idx=322&nCurPage=1&strSearchColunm=&strSearchWord=&ListNum=237) with a rear inspired by a motorcycle helmet.
The aggressive and sporty exterior's backed by a 1.6-liter direct-injection four-cylinder "Gamma" engine with dual continuously variable valve timing (D-CVVT), offering a relatively potent 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque for its small displacement. Though not as powerful as the 180-hp Scion tC, the most powerful car in this class, the Hyundai weighs 2,584 pounds compared to the latter's 3,060 pounds — nearly a 500 pounds difference.
At the press conference, Hyundai USA CEO John Krafcik said "Somehow I think Colin Chapman would be pleased."
http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2011/01/500x_hyundai_veloster_interior.jpg (http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2011/01/hyundai_veloster_interior.jpg)Both transmissions offered are six-speed: a lightweight manual for the purists and a new Hyundai-developed six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) for everyone else. Hyundai estimates the combination of the DCT, small engine, and low weight will produce a stellar 40 mpg.
No one's driven the Veloster yet, at least no one who can talk about it, so all comparisons to the CRX and the CR-Z have to take place in purely hypothetical land. But in purely hypothetical land the Veloster smokes it with better fuel economy, more power, lower weight, better transmissions, and a more attractive aesthetic.
http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2011/01/500x_2012_hyundai_veloster_3.jpg (http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2011/01/2012_hyundai_veloster_3.jpg)Hyundai, like Honda, is marketing this car as "fun to drive" and points to the McPherson struts and coil springs up front. There's also what they're calling a V-torsion beam rear suspension out back, which we think is marketing speak for a variation on the twist-beam torsion bar. Cars come standard on 17-inch alloys with optional 18-inchers.
Ultimately, the Veloster may compete more with the Mini than with anything from Honda, offering more power in a package weighing slightly more than the three-door Cooper but less than the five-door Clubman. The Veloster's going on sale this summer with a price starting around $17,000.

2012 Hyundai Veloster reinvents the affordable sports coupe

After the usual tease of spy shots and teasers, the sheet has finally been pulled back on the 2012 Hyundai Veloster (http://autoblog.com/model/veloster). Not only does the Veloster take aim at wannabe efficient sports cars like the Honda CR-Z (http://autoblog.com/model/cr-z), it reinvents the way we look at the shape of coupes and hatchbacks, employing a unique three-door design that's surprisingly better in execution than we expected.
Hyundai (http://autoblog.com/make/hyundai) is using its 2012 Veloster to unveil a slate of new technologies, including a brand new engine and transmission, as well as the automaker's first foray into the safety and convenience telematics realm with Blue Link (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/05/ces-2011-blue-link-is-hyundais-answer-to-onstar/). Hyundai is promising class-leading fuel efficiency with a truly sporty driving experience all wrapped in a wholly unique package, but does the Veloster meet the criteria? Follow the jump (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/10/2012-hyundai-veloster-detroit-2011/#continued) to find out.
Perhaps the biggest question surrounding the Veloster is its unique three-door arrangement. This isn't the first time we've seen extra doors on sport coupes, but Hyundai has chosen to forego the use of rear-hinged suicide doors for an honest-to-goodness full-size door on the passenger side of the Veloster. To maintain the car's coupe-like style, the rear door handle has been integrated into the C-pillar, and you really have to see it in person to understand that it's not nearly as awkward as you might think.
Hyundai promises that the Veloster will be agile and fun to drive, employing things like a lightweight V-torsion beam in the rear suspension setup, a 23-millimeter stabilizer bar to control body roll and sport-tuned electric power steering. A quick-ratio steering system has also been fitted, and the Veloster rides on standard 17-inch wheels wrapped in 215/45-series all-season tires. Two sets of 18-inch alloy wheels are available, housed in 215/40-series performance rubber.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/01/02-2012-hyundai-veloster630-2.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2012-hyundai-veloster-0/#3765608)
The Veloster is powered by Hyundai's all-new 1.6-liter Gamma inline-four which produces 138 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 123 pound-feet of torque at 4,850 rpm. No, it isn't a particularly potent engines, but it should be plenty to move the 2,584-pound Veloster along at a decent clip. Through the use of direct injection, Hyundai is able to make this mill surprisingly efficient, and while official EPA numbers haven't been released just yet, Hyundai claims that the Veloster will net around 40 miles per gallon on the highway, easily besting the Honda CR-Z hybrid and even smaller B-segment offerings like the Mazda2 (http://autoblog.com/model/mazda2) or Honda Fit (http://autoblog.com/model/fit). The standard transmission is a six-speed manual, though an all-new six-speed dual-cluch transmission is available.
Inside, Hyundai provides a host of newfangled technology, including a standard multi-function seven-inch touch-screen display with Pandora internet radio, Gracenote music display, video playback, video game console connectivity (yes, you read correctly – video game console connectivity) and, of course, Bluetooth. How's that for trying to capture the youth market? Of course, Hyundai's usual host of safety equipment is still on deck, with the new Blue Link telematics system that encompasses things like automatic crash notification, enhanced roadside assistance, remote door and vehicle start, and convenience features like voice text messaging, vehicle diagnostics information and a range of navigation features.
Pricing has yet to be announced for the 2012 Veloster, but in keeping with Hyundai's quest for affordability, we'd assume that the starting price for the new sports coupe will be found somewhere in the sub-$20,000 range. For the full details, check out Hyundai's official release below.

Rhys Millen drove his new Hyundai Veloster Rally Car (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/veloster) into the spotlight at the Chicago Auto Show (http://www.autoblog.com/category/chicago-auto-show/) this morning. The purpose-built racer is fitted with a hand-built Hyundai (http://www.autoblog.com/make/hyundai/) 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine boosted by a HKS ball bearing turbocharger. As expected, the beast makes some serious power. According to Hyundai, the four-banger spits out out 500 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. An Xtrac six-speed sequential gearbox sends the power to an Xtrac permanent all-wheel drive system. The suspension is comprised of Proflex jumbo coilovers that help give this competition Veloster generous travel. Hidden inside the 18-inch HRE alloy wheels (wrapped in 245/40-18 Hankook racing tires) are 14-inch Alcon rotors up front and 12-inch Alcon rotors in the rear (six-piston calipers sit at all four corners). With a curb weight of just 2,656 pounds, the Veloster Rally Car's acceleration ought to be... um, sick fast.
Check out the Veloster Rally Car this year, as it competes in the U.S. Rallycross Championship this year driven by Millen, Robby Maddison and Marcus Dodd. Millen and Maddison will also drive the Veloster rally cars at Summer X Games, where it will compete against Ken Block and Tanner Foust in their Ford Fiesta (http://www.autoblog.com/model/fiesta) racecars, among others. Should be fun.

When Hyundai unveiled (http://www.egmcartech.com/2011/04/08/hyundai-veloster-turbo-to-get-208-hp-1-6l-4-cylinder-turbo/#) the 2011 Hyundai Veloster hatchback at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show (http://www.egmcartech.com/2011/01/10/2011-detroit-2012-hyundai-veloster-is-inspired-by-motorcycles-has-a-third-door/) earlier this year, it was confirmed that the Korean automakers will indeed offer a turbocharged version to take on the hot-hatch segment. However, Hyundai did not provide any details as to which engine will power (http://www.egmcartech.com/2011/04/08/hyundai-veloster-turbo-to-get-208-hp-1-6l-4-cylinder-turbo/#) the hot Veloster.
While many of you really wanted to see the 274-hp 2.0L turbocharged from the Sonata 2.0T make it into the Veloster, reports suggest that Hyundai will be fitting its new 1.6L T-GDI turbo engine in the turbo version of the hatchback (http://www.egmcartech.com/2011/04/08/hyundai-veloster-turbo-to-get-208-hp-1-6l-4-cylinder-turbo/#).
The 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine produces 208-hp at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 195 lb-ft of torque available from 1,600 rpm to 5,000 rpm.

Refresher: The 2012 Hyundai Veloster is powered by an all-new 1.6L GDI Gamma direct-injection gasoline engine making 138-hp and 123 lb-ft of torque. It can be mated to either a 6-speed (http://www.egmcartech.com/2011/04/08/hyundai-veloster-turbo-to-get-208-hp-1-6l-4-cylinder-turbo/#) manual, or Hyundai’s all new dual-clutch 6-speed automatic. Fuel-economy wise, the 2012 Veloster is expected to get

If VW sold the Scirroco here, I'd buy one. But this Veloster\Tiburon thing is shaping up to be pretty damn cool. If I didn't need AWD and a Roundel on my next car, I'd be interested.

I think if Hyundai could get their AWD program going w/ the Genesis Coupe and sedan it could trickle down the lineup (it is a good base at least)

That's what I was thinking, too. I would love an AWD, turbo-4 Genesis Coupe. Perhaps they'll step up to that when that Toyobaru is released in both RWD and AWD forms.

First Ride: 2012 Hyundai Veloster
CEO Takes Us For A Spin In This Innovative One, Two, Three-Door
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/05/2012-hyundai-veloster-fr.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2012-hyundai-veloster-first-ride/)
2012 Hyundai Veloster – Click above for high-res image gallery
"How about a ride in the Veloster (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/veloster)?"
While the experience falls seriously short of taking a few orbits in the Space Shuttle, those seven words were enticing enough to motivate us to cross the dreaded Los Angeles basin during rainy rush-hour traffic last week. The Veloster is Hyundai's latest addition to a rapidly expanding lineup that now encompasses everything from the modest $12,000 Accent (http://www.autoblog.com/model/accent) to the Lexus (http://www.autoblog.com/make/lexus/)-fighting $58,000 Equus (http://www.autoblog.com/model/equus). The new hatchback - uniquely configured with one driver door and two passenger doors - is parked on the low end of the model range, promoted as a compact coupe offering fun-to-drive chassis dynamics, a long list of standard innovative technology and hybrid-beating fuel economy in one cool-looking package.
Hyundai (http://www.autoblog.com/make/hyundai) isn't letting anyone drive the Veloster yet, but like proud parents, they are more than willing to show us around the car, from top to bottom, and take us for an extensive drive around the block - as passengers.
However, this isn't just a simple low-level meet-and-greet, as our host will be John Krafcik, CEO of Hyundai Motor America. Understandably, we had a slew of questions swirling around our minds before our ride: How comfortable is the cabin? Do tall adults fit in the second row? What does the engine sound like? How does it handle? Lastly, why does everyone keep comparing the new Veloster to the old Honda (http://www.autoblog.com/make/honda/) CRX? Thankfully, the rain had stopped by the time we arrived in Fountain Valley. The clouds were breaking apart and sunlight was drying the pavement. Hyundai's Orange County headquarters isn't exactly picturesque, but the building adequately houses executives, engineers and mechanics as they work on bringing the automaker's new products to market (the company is moving into a new building next summer (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/15/hyundai-building-new-california-headquarters/)). These days, the facility is sheltering a handful of Veloster models, in various stages of development, as the vehicles undergo testing, refinement and fitting for third-party accessories.
After clearing security, we don our badges and walk upstairs to meet Mr. Krafcik. The amiable Chief Executive has generously agreed to give us a Veloster chalk-talk in his office, followed by a walk-around and a ride. (Rumor says that nobody outside Hyundai's inner circle has driven the Veloster and lived to talk about it.)
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/05/lead11-2012-hyundai-veloster-fr.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2012-hyundai-veloster-first-ride/#4164656)
We bump into our first two Velosters in one of the labs, en-route to the garage. Each is being measured for graphics. One of the vehicles is matte gray (Hyundai says it was a vinyl wrap test, but our closer inspection says it was paint) while the other is white. Both are wearing vinyl stripes. The gray version, with large white vector stripes, appears to be related to the famous Ford Gran Torino in the 1970s American cop show, Starsky & Hutch.
Two more Velosters wait for us in the "top secret" service bay. The first car is one of the early prototypes, likely the model we photographed (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/10/2012-hyundai-veloster-detroit-2011-2/) at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show (http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/), painted in Vitamin C over a black interior. Parked a few feet away is a newer pre-production prototype model, in Century White paint with black innards. We focused our attention on the latter, as the interior textures and electronics were most complete.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/05/lead12-2012-hyundai-veloster-fr.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2012-hyundai-veloster-first-ride/#4164661)
The exterior, a fresh interpretation of Hyundai's now-familiar Fluidic Sculpture design language, is sharp-looking in person. While the exterior features more than handful of complex curves, from the cutout containing the standard LED running lamps to the lower bodyside door sculpture, Hyundai has still found room for its familiar high beltline A-line crease running from the front fender through the door handle.
First, let's talk about those doors. From the driver's side, the Veloster appears to be a coupe, with one large traditional entry door. However, the passenger side is configured with two front-hinged doors - making it appear to be more of a sedan. The handle for the rear door is hidden in the C-pillar (just like the Acura ZDX (http://www.autoblog.com/model/zdx)). Pop it open, and it swings as widely as the door in front of it. The door opens and closes independent on the front passenger door - it is not a smaller "suicide" access door like those of the Mazda RX-8 (http://www.autoblog.com/model/rx-8) or the Mini Clubman (http://www.autoblog.com/model/clubman). To open the rear hatch, just find the handle conveniently hidden under the rear badge. There is a lot of room in there, especially with the split seats folded down. Hyundai says the Veloster's total interior volume beats the current-generation Scion tC (http://www.autoblog.com/model/tc), Honda CR-Z (http://www.autoblog.com/model/cr-z), Mini Cooper (http://www.autoblog.com/model/cooper) hardtop and Mini Clubman (http://www.autoblog.com/model/clubman), and we believe them.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/05/lead5-2012-hyundai-veloster-fr.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2012-hyundai-veloster-first-ride/#4164660)http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/05/lead4-2012-hyundai-veloster-fr.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2012-hyundai-veloster-first-ride/#4164682)
Also capturing our eye was the large panorama roof (part of the optional Style Package) which pops up and opens out as it did on the Honda CRX (when open, it stops just short of hitting the satellite radio antennae). The rear of the Veloster features a cool-looking center-mounted twin-pipe exhaust, which owes something to the Porsche Boxster (http://www.autoblog.com/model/boxster). This model is also wearing the optional 18-inch alloys (17-inch alloys are standard) with color-contrasting inserts (part of the Tech Package) wrapped with 215/40VR18 tires.
We begrudgingly settle our six-foot, two-inch frame into the front passenger seat of the white Veloster - we want to be driving - with Krafcik (five-foot, ten-inches) at the wheel. Fellow Autoblog associate editor, Jeff Glucker (six-foot, three-inches) occupies the right rear seat.
Hyundai reiterates that the design of its Veloster is inspired by high-performance sport bikes. While the blacked-out A-pillars give the exterior its "motorcycle helmet visor" appearance, it's the cabin's center stack that really stands out. The pushbutton start is smack-center, right below the HVAC controls and above the transmission lever. Silver grab handles, like those on bikes, are found to the left and right of each front passenger. We really liked the almost Honda Ridgeline-esque (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ridgeline) ones on the doors, as they are a comfortable place to settle hands.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/05/lead7-2012-hyundai-veloster-fr.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2012-hyundai-veloster-first-ride/#4164677)http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/05/lead6-2012-hyundai-veloster-fr.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2012-hyundai-veloster-first-ride/#4164679)
The front two seats, upholstered in a combination of smooth and woven fabric, are comfortable and there is generous headroom. A glance over the shoulder towards the second row and cargo area reveals more space than one expects. Tall man Glucker, hanging out in the rear seat, is doing just fine. The four-passenger Veloster (there are cup holders in the center of the rear bench) accommodates his frame nicely when the front passenger seat is moved up a few inches. There is decent legroom back there, but Glucker's head bumps against the leading edge of the hatchback if he leans forward (he notes it isn't a deal breaker, and it's still more comfortable than most of the cramped vehicles in this class).
Krafcik may be our chauffeur, but he certainly isn't going to drive like one. We depart the parking lot of Hyundai's Orange County headquarters and he immediately puts his right foot to the floor. The direct-injected 1.6-liter engine, rated at 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, jumps to attention. With a curb weight of just 2,584 pounds (more than 400 pounds lighter than a Scion tC), the Veloster should accelerate at an enjoyable clip. Unfortunately, our Veloster is packing 500-plus pounds of dude, so acceleration is less than breathtaking. Mated to Hyundai's first six-speed dual-clutch gearbox - tuned for economy rather than neck-snapping shifts - the four-cylinder gives it a hero's try as we thread our way briskly through the traffic. Word on the street says the six-speed manual transmission is the sportier of the two gearboxes.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/05/lead8-2012-hyundai-veloster-fr.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2012-hyundai-veloster-first-ride/#4164673)
While the exhaust tips look trick, there really isn't much noise emanating from the rear of the vehicle. Most of the audible track comes from up front, just like most other economy-oriented compacts. The engine isn't buzzy or annoying, but there is no mistaking its eco-40 mpg mission.
The suspension, with its rear stabilizer bar neatly integrated into the V-torsion beam design, was apparently tuned on Southern California's famed Ortega Highway. In an attempt to demonstrate the Veloster's handling, Krafcik swerves abruptly left, right, left and then right again. We observe zero drama as the chassis responded well to the steering input without any untoward tail wag. On the other hand, there is a high likelihood that more than one Orange County soccer mom on the road near our vehicle ponders reporting us to the police.

Most everyone, including Hyundai, brings up the old Honda CRX (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/honda+cr-x) when discussing the Veloster. That beloved compact (produced from 1983-1991) wasn't especially powerful, but it was celebrated for its superb driving dynamics, roomy two-place cabin and commendable fuel economy. The Hyundai Veloster will likely deliver performance numbers comparable to the performance-oriented CRX Si of yore, but with much more interior room, refinement and better fuel economy – all while meeting much more stringent safety standards and offering a back seat.
Only fools gauge driving impressions from the passenger seat, but we are left with nothing but good things to say about our ride in Hyundai's new 2012 Veloster. The cabin is roomy, comfortable and delivers generous utility. The standard Blue Link (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/05/ces-2011-blue-link-is-hyundais-answer-to-onstar/) telematics platform offers a comprehensive level of innovative electronic componentry and the 1.6-liter GDI seems to deliver decent power with impressive fuel economy.
Is the Veloster a modern-day incarnation of the much-admired CRX? Next time, put us alone in the left seat and we'll find out.

Could fucking care less.
A Jetta TDi gets that fuel mileage, and looks a 100x's better than that thing.
These new cars coming out these days all look the same.
Audi wannabe headlights, squared off disgusting back ends, low HP, and NO fucking LINES to them. This shit looks like something off of the Red-Green show, where he duct taped two cars together.. seriously.
It's fucking HIDEOUS.
I think nowhere in the world of engineering does 40mpg HAVE to = hideous.

It was said a few years back that LED was going to be a HUGE thing in headlamps and AUDI jumped on it and took off running, and it is only natural that other companies are using the technology.
Awesome that you brought up a car that will never be crossed shopped w/ this segment, and another interesting fact that you brought it up, it just got bashed to hell over the "change" that VW did in the looks dept.

I'm still fascinated by the front grille adjusting the vents for better aerodynamics. It's nice to see a "mpg war" as well as high hp cars being brought out these days. And more hatchbacks is a positive step in my book.

How can you say that? If you're in the market for a fuel efficient car, you'd be an absolute testical licking retarded neanderthal to not consider the Jetta, or other cars similiar to it.
The new Ford Focus looks exponentially better, and even the Ka, and Fiesta look better than that.
It's just hideous. It reminds me of that stupid Honda Insight POS from back in the day. Absolutely ugly as fuck.
Plenty of people I've run across enjoy the LOOKS of a vehicle just as much as its functionality.
Moot point is Moot.

The new 2012 Hyundai Veloster (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1053149_2012-hyundai-veloster-preview-2011-detroit-auto-show) is still in the process of making its way to showrooms all across the country, coming onto the market with its unique hatchback design and potentially game-changing features and functions.
At the top of its list is a funky quartet of doors. Hyundai calls it a three-door vehicle, but the Veloster has four doors in all, counting the hatchback, the driver-side door, and the pair of doors on its passenger side (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1062150_five-door-hyundai-veloster-in-the-works-report?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MotorAuthority2+%28MotorAutho rity%29#).
While this odd layout may work for the U.S., and the other markets where this four-door version will be sold, Hyundai is reportedly working on a more conventional five-door model (with two doors on either side of the car (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1062150_five-door-hyundai-veloster-in-the-works-report?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MotorAuthority2+%28MotorAutho rity%29#) plus the rear hatch) for global markets.
The information was revealed by Hyundai’s Overseas Product Planning Manager Eunjoo Shin, who spoke recently to Carsales.
Importantly, this also marks the first time that a Hyundai official has revealed that an alternative variant of the Veloster was in the works. If the report proves true, perhaps we could also be seeing a sporty convertible (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1062150_five-door-hyundai-veloster-in-the-works-report?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MotorAuthority2+%28MotorAutho rity%29#) model one day as well.

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Spy Shots
http://images.thecarconnection.com/med/hyundai-veloster_100359218_m.jpg2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo spy shots
One of our sleuth spy photographers has caught the upcoming turbocharged version of the Hyundai Veloster sports coupe (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1064715_2012-hyundai-veloster-mega-gallery) undergoing hot weather testing in the harsh conditions of California’s Death Valley.
Its sighting confirms previous reports (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1058108_2012-hyundai-veloster-turbo-to-pack-208-horsepower-report) that a hotter Veloster was in the works and reveals that the car’s styling will be much more aggressive than its more mundane, naturally-aspirated sibling.
A turbocharged version of the standard Veloster’s 1.6-liter direct-injected four-cylinder (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1064902_2013-hyundai-veloster-turbo-spy-shots#) engine should deliver upwards of 208 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, putting the vehicle in prime Volkswagen GTI and MINI Cooper John Cooper Works territory. The standard model puts out just 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque.
The prototype also appears to pick up a new exhaust system (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1064902_2013-hyundai-veloster-turbo-spy-shots#), with circular dual tips replacing the squarer shaped standard ones. Aggressively styled bumpers and flared wheel (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1064902_2013-hyundai-veloster-turbo-spy-shots#) arches also dominate the prototype. Expect huge intakes and a nasty exhaust growl to accompany the new Veloster variant when it finally arrives.
Look out for a debut of the turbocharged Veloster by mid-next year, with a showroom appearance to follow shortly after.
In the meantime, click here for all the details (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1053149_2012-hyundai-veloster-preview-2011-detroit-auto-show) on the regular 2012 Hyundai Veloster.

Veloster Turbo will debut in late 2012
Here we have the latest spy shots of the upcoming 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, caught while testing in southern Europe.
Hyundai is still using some pretty heavy camouflage on the front and rear ends of the Veloster Turbo, masking some body style changes. But we can see that the prototype spied here has larger exhausts and more aggressively styled bumpers.
The Hyundai Veloster Turbo is expected to come with a 1.6 liter turbocharged GDI unit with 210 PS (155 kW / 207 bhp) and 265 Nm (195 lb-ft) of torque (http://www.worldcarfans.com/111112938574/2013-hyundai-veloster-turbo-spied-again#).
The 2013 Veloster Turbo will debut sometime in late 2012.
