View Full Version : A First Look at the New Smurfs
Whether you like it or not, the CG Smurfs movie is happening and the guys at UGO.com have snagged a peek at how things are shaping up. Though the film is currently in pre-production, an insider was able to snag a shot of a rendering of one the new Smurfs, and the result is tantamount to a tabloid look at a cheerful Sasquatch.
(You'll have to click the image below to see the CG-rendered Smurf in full at the source.)
Suffice it to say, the Smurfs continue to be the weird-looking, small, blue dudes we know and love -- as opposed to James Cameron's weird-looking, big, blue dudes -- but their transition from 2-D to pudgy 3-D is slightly unnerving.
Directed by Raja Gosnell (Beverly Hills Chihuahua), the Smurfs movie is set in New York City -- Central Park, to be exact, which increases my skepticism regarding this movie about sevenfold -- and will be combined with live action.

The first story details from Columbia Pictures’ big screen adaptation of The Smurfs has leaked on SpoilerTV in the form of a casting call. The film, which is a CGI/live action hybrid, is being helmed by Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo and Beverly Hills Chihuahua).
The casting call is for two characters, both described as “Major supporting roles”, the first of which is a late 20’s/early 30’s first-time expectant mother named Grace who is juggling an overworked husband and a household fill of Smurfs. The second character is Odile, a beautiful, charming (when she wants to be), high-powered executive for a high-end French cosmetics company. While there aren’t many story clues included in that breakdown, the “strong comedic ability” required for the role hints of an encounter with the little blue creatures. The confirms that the Smurfs will exist or be transported into our human-populated world for their live-action big screen adventure. In the original cartoon series, the 3 apples high creatures lived in mushroom houses in medieval times where they had to do battle with Gargamel, a “particularly an evil wizard obsessed with capturing them for his own sinister purposes.”
Actor Found For Papa Smurf
An old school smurfer may have been found for the upcoming Smurfs movie. He's an old school smurfy comedian who has smurfed his way to the top having made tons of people laugh and smurf for years.
UGO got the smurfy scoop. Who could play Papa Smurf? None other than Jonathan Winters.
Personally, I think Jonathan Winters is the smurfiest choice they could come up with. The guy has made me smurf for years. Some of you young guys may not know who he is and you probably don't give a smurf, but he's got a great voice. I just hope at 84 years old he can say his smurfing lines without smurfing it all up.
Neil Patrick Harris Cast in Smurfs: The Movie
Neil Patrick Harris has been racking up a hell of a lot of cred. He’s done well on How I Met Your Mother and has parlayed the geek crowd’s young memories of his Doogie Howser, M.D. role into a mature fanbase thanks to appearances in Starship Troopers, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, the Harold and Kumar movies and even a star turn hosting the Emmys.
And now he’s going to spend that cred on Smurfs: The Movie?
Deadline Hollywood has the scoop on Harris appearing in the film. He won’t be a Smurf; instead he’ll play the lead live-action character in the live-action CGI hybrid story. The film has reportedly been under development for a few years, and we’ve only recently begun to learn anything about it. But it’s the freakin’ Smurfs. Not really rocket science.
Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo and Beverly Hills Chihuahua) directs, and the story involves ‘real’ characters like the one played by Harris encountering the society of little blue dudes and one blue dudette.
We saw some of a casting call sheet for the film not long ago, which described two “Major supporting roles,” which presumably suggests that the real major roles are (as you’d expect) the Smurfs. One is a late 20’s/early 30’s first-time expectant mother named Grace who is juggling an overworked husband and a household fill of Smurfs. The second character is Odile, a beautiful, charming (when she wants to be), high-powered executive for a high-end French cosmetics company.
Is it a stretch to think that Neil Patrick Harris might be playing Grace’s husband? And, for the love of all that is good, why am I thinking about it even this much? Again, it’s the freakin’ Smurfs. Three-apple high little mushroom dwellers who fight a wizard named Gargamel. I’m actually sad that Harris is doing this.
Unless he’s playing Gargamel. If we get a singing, dancing, cat-petting Neil Patrick Harris as the evil Smurf-hating wizard of this thing, then all may be forgiven.
Smurfs: The Movie shoots in April.
The Smurfs Casting: Hank Azaria and Katy Perry Lend Voices; Jayma Mays Nabs Female Lead
We’ve had a good bit of casting for The Smurfs (not Smurfs: the Movie, as we’d seen it written before) so far, including Neil Patrick Harris as one of the primary humans, and Jonathan Winters, Alan Cumming and George Lopez as some of the little blue guys in white pants.
Now more names have been thrown onto the pile: Hank Azaria, Katy Perry and Glee’s Jayma Mays.
EW reports on Azaria and Perry. Hank Azaria will play Gargamel, the sworn enemy of the Smurfs, while Perry plays Gargamel’s creation, Smurfette. Guess that means that my hopes of having Neil Patrick Harris as Gargamel have been dashed. Note that I use the term ‘hopes’ in the loosest possible sense. Sure, Azaria will be good, but NPH could’ve been magic. This will be Perry’s feature acting debut, so long as you don’t count Get Him to the Greek, in which she appears as herself.
THR, meanwhile, notes that Jayma Mays will appear as the pregnant wife of the character played by Neil Patrick Harris. The story takes place in Central Park in New York City, and “centers on the happy expectant couple’s lives being turned upside-down upon meeting these blue creatures.” A previous casting report pegged the lead female character as Grace, “a late 20’s/early 30’s first-time expectant mother who is juggling an overworked husband and a household fill of Smurfs.”
EW specifically says that Azaria will lend his voice to Gargamel, which is interesting. I would have expected that character to be live-action. Not that this entire movie isn’t going to be odd to begin with, bug having an animated human character (Gargamel) interacting with real human actors and the little blue heroes will make it even more of a bizarre mix. But, as I’ve said before, this movie really isn’t for me so I’m not going to worry about it.

It is a sign that I'm on KCSR too much that when i see "smurf" I instantly think of a certain blue Z06 instead of a small blue cartoon character.
New Pics Surface Of Hank Azaria As Gargamel
While my head is still trying to figure out why in the world we need a Smurfs movie, Hank Azaria has said, "The hell with it." and has dived right into his role as the Smurf hating Gargamel.
"The Smurfs" were created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, known throughout the world as Peyo. "The Smurfs," originally called "Les Schtroumpfs" in French, were created for a Belgian series of comic books, first as minor characters. The villagers, known for their blue skin and small statures, spawned a line of statuettes, games, toys, theme parks and a hit TV series, which ran as part of NBC's Saturday-morning lineup from 1981-90.
Jonathan Winters, who voiced multiple characters on the long-running Hanna-Barbera cartoon version of "Smurfs," will play Papa Smurf. Katy Perry is in talks to portray Smurfette, Alan Cumming is taking on Gutsy Smurf and George Lopez is onboard as Grouchy Smurf, Hank Azaria is Gargamel.
Neil Patrick Harris will play the lead live-action character.

The Smurfs:
You know, we may be marveling at what a brilliant film this turned out to be after all — but wow, these set photos don't inspire much confidence. Among other things, Sofia Vergara was on set as the wife of the evil cosmetics company exec (Neil Patrick Harris), and Tim Gunn was there playing an executive assistant. And check out Tim Gunn holding Azrael the cat! Also, more of Hank Azaria as Gargamel. And reportedly, director Raja Gosnell is trying to find a way to have Tailor Smurf say Tim Gunn's Project Runway catchphrase, "Make it work." How can this movie fail? First Official Photo From The Smurfs, Teaser Trailer Description (http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/06/16/first-official-photo-from-the-smurfs-teaser-trailer-description/)

Sony Pictures Animation/Columbia Pictures has released the first official photo from the upcoming big screen CGI/live action hybrid 3D (http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/06/16/first-official-photo-from-the-smurfs-teaser-trailer-description/#) adaptation of The Smurfs. The photo features our first look at the computer generated Smurfs: Grouchy, Papa and Clumsy, in Times Square New York City. Check the uncropped photo out in full, after the jump. We also have a full description of the teaser trailer, and information on where/when you can find it.
The teaser trailer for the movie will be attached to prints of Toy Story 3 (http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/06/16/first-official-photo-from-the-smurfs-teaser-trailer-description/#). I’ve had a chance to see the trailer, which involves landmarks around the world turning blue, with a voice over telling the audience to prepare for something big, and that next Summer “our world is about to get Smurf’d”. We then see the a couple seconds of three smurfs in Times Square, as shown in this first preview image. This is followed by a shot of a New York Yellow Taxi diving fast with the Smurfs holding on to the advertisement on the top of the car. The advertisement reads “SmurfHappens.com”. Right now the domain redirects to the Sony Pictures website, but I’m sure the official website will be up Thursday along with the trailer which will be on Yahoo Movies.

What do you think of the computer animated versions of The Smurfs?
USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2010-06-16-Smurfs16_ST_N.htm) reveals how the film begins: The opening starts off in the Middle Ages, Gargamel discovers the Smurfs’ magical village and scatters them into the woods. Clumsy goes the wrong way into a forbidden grotto where a few other Smurfs follow, and because it’s a blue moon, there’s a magical portal that transports them to Central Park. Yeah, doesn’t make much sense… And instead of trying to eat the Smurfs, the movie Gargamel “simply wants to capture the Smurfs to serve as charms, whose mystical essence will make his inept magic more powerful — and dangerous.”
More info:
The previously announced voice cast: Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, Katy Perry as Smurfette, Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf, Fred Armisen (SNL) will voice Brainy Smurf, Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator Salvation) will play Clumsy Smurf, Paul Reubens will voice Jokey Smurf, John Oliver plays Vanity Smurf; Saturday Night Live‘s Kenan Thompson as Greedy Smurf, The Office’s B.J. Novak as Baker Smurf; and comedian Jeff Foxworthy as Handy Smurf.
Previously announced live-action cast: Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays (Glee) star as “an expectant couple whose lives are turned upside down when the Smurfs cross over from their magical village to New York City,” Hank Azaria will play the Smurfs’ nemesis, the evil wizard Gargamel, and Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) plays Odile, Harris’s boss, a cosmetics executive.
The film is helmed by Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo and Beverly Hills Chihuahua) is scheduled to hit theaters on August 3rd 2011.

Check out the first image (http://blog.moviefone.com/2010/11/08/smurfette-has-been-sighted/) (above) of Katy Perry's (http://perezhilton.com/category/katy-perry/) Smurfette from Columbia's upcoming Smurfs movie.
Who exactly is Smurfette, you might ask?
She was created by the archenemy of the Smurfs, wicked sorcerer Gargamel, in an effort to use her as a saboteur against the Smurfs.
Gargamel's plan failed though when Papa Smurf took pity and reversed her spell, turning Smurfette into a real, live Smurf! From that point on, she became much more attractive, and became desired by ALL the Smurfs! Watch out, Russell Brand (http://perezhilton.com/category/russell-brand/)!
We'll get to see much more of Smurfette when the movie is released on August 3, 2011.
