I. Maintenance
AppZapper
Although every application should be self-contained, most scatter caches, preferences and logs all over the place, which AppZapper will kill for you. Drag an app. onto it and it'll do all the work; alternatively, use the genie function to list all the apps. installed so you can decide what you want to get rid of.
License: Shareware, $12.95 to buy.
OmniDiskSweeper
Quickly shows you what's taking up your hard-drive space and lets you kill files from within the program. Look at WhatSize for a free equivalent.
License: Shareware, $14.92 to buy.
OnyX
A great maintenance program. Lets you run cron jobs whenever you want, repair disk permissions, alter dock properties, just tons of options.
License: Free.
Maintenance
From the same guy who made OnyX, Maintenance does what it says on the tin. It can repair permissions, run periodic scripts, reset Spotlight's Index, rebuild the LaunchServices database, delete Application/Font/System caches and more. Well worth a look.
License Free.
Menumeters
A set of tools for you to check on your system's memory, CPU, and network activity. It lives in your menu bar so it's always available at a glance.
License: Free.
Coconut Flavour
This is actually a small suite of programs, consisting of coconutBattery (your battery's health), coconutIdentityCard (details on your Mac's birthplace and such), and coconutWiFi (if you're in range of a network).
License: Free.
Carbon Copy Cloner
From Tonelok: "Universal Binary, also
* Support for block-level disk-to-disk clones.
* Support for backing up across the network.
* The ability to drill down into folders to select exactly what gets copied and what doesn't (you can drill down indefinitely).
* A more responsive interface and the ability to stop the clone.
* More accurate feedback during the clone.
* The ability to pick up where a previously aborted backup task left off.
* More information about your disks are available within the CCC interface.
* Advanced scheduling capabilities -- choose what days to run your backups and how frequently they should run. You can also defer a backup if it starts at an inopportune time.
* Now you can create a scheduled task that backs up your data whenever you attach a specific hard drive or iPod."
Ia. Antivirus & Firewall
Macs don't need an antivirus at all, no matter what your IT department likes to say. They're just a drain on your resources and your wallet for no benefit at all. Ditto a software firewall because OS X has most ports closed by default (there's one built-in anyway, under "Sharing" in your System Preferences).
II. Archives
UnrarX
Your standard Unrar solution. It's pretty bare bones and it occasionally chokes on multi-part archives but it works.
License: Free
Stuffit Expander
Some people still use .sitx archives to store their applications in so it's worth having this hanging around just in case. Note that some old versions had a bug concerning their menu extension, which used to crash the Finder.
License: Free.
The Unarchiver
This will handle .rar, .zip, .sitx and other more obscure formats. The interface is nice and it works well.
License: Free.
MacPar deLuxe
Admiraldennis said, "handles par, par2, and multi-part rar files (better than UnrarX). Can also create parity sets. An indispensable utility, especially for us Usenet types."
License: Donationware
III. Internet
Rapidweaver
Braggot told us, "Rapidweaver is a life saver for making really nice web sites. Brilliant for code-retards like myself but also brilliant for some of you code-junkies out there. I used it to make my band's website (not trying to plug my band, just wanting to show an almost finished product)."
License: $40
Password Manager + AutoFill for Mac OS X (1 password)
It's a massive password application. Autofill, portability, multiple browser support, password generation, .Mac integration, anti-phishing etc.
License: $29.95
IIIa.Web Browsing
Pimp My Safari
This is a large collection of extensions for Safari, some of which are free and some aren't. The general consensus is that Saft and PithHelmet are the two worth forking money out for.
License: Free.
Firefox
Firefox. You all know it and it's available for the Mac. It's a bit shitty compared to the Windows version but it does work if you're obsessed with your FOSS stuff. Deep Square Leg said, "potential users ought to consider the optimised builds made at BeatnikPad or by ElFurbe. At Beatnik's site you can also grab versions built with aqua-like form widgets, but ElFurbe produces a daily build based on the nightly code if you like living on the edge. If you use Uno then use this Firefox theme so it blends in."
License: Free.
Camino
Camino is a Gecko-based browser (the engine that powers Firefox) but written specifically for the Mac. It lacks Firefox's extensions but it runs much smoother and behaves like a good Mac citizen. Have a look at Pimp My Camino for various bits and pieces to enhance Camino's functionality.
License: Free.
Shiira
As Camino but based on Webkit so it's lightning-fast. Try it if you like Safari's minimalist style but hate the lack of options.
License: Free.
Opera
Opera is the grand-daddy of all internet browsers. Everything that you need extensions or add-on applications to do in Safari, Camino, Shiira and Firefox can probably be done natively within Opera. It's not well-optimised for the Mac so it looks like ass and needs plenty of tweaking and configuration before it becomes a good experience to use. Once you've done that, however, it's amazing.
License: Free.
OmniWeb
Doctor Jackalope said, "Fast, fast, fucking FAST browser for OS X that isn't a huge memory hog like Safari. The side-drawer tabs take a little bit to get used to but they're OK on a widescreen display".
License: Shareware, $14.95 to buy.
IIIb. FTP Clients
OneButton FTP
This goon-made FTP client seeks to offer an open-source, user-friendly client with an emphasis on drag and drop functionality and file queuing.
License: Free
Transmit
A feature-packed FTP client that probably most closely emulates the behavior of FlashFXP on Windows.
License: $29.95, 15-day trial
CyberDuck
Apps said, "Eh, Cyberduck annoys me, but it's the FTP client I keep going back to. It's quite actively developed, and it gets the job done usually. Must be that rubber duck icon."
License: Free
Yummy FTP
Fellow goon Nex says, "After a long search I finaly found a FTP client that I think is decent on the Mac platform."
License: $25, 15-day trial
Fugu FTP Client
tmbc10784 said, "I think this is the best ftp client I have used on OSX. It has a FXP-like window layout -- local folder on left, remote folder on right. Fugu also works with sFTP!" Note that it doesn't yet work with traditional FTP, only sFTP and SCP. Telloc suggested Son of Fugu, which is supposedly better than Fugu.
License: Free.
IIIc. File Sharing
Transmission
It's like uTorrent, but for Mac. Very small memory footprint, quick to start up and quit. I like minimalism. It's also banned on a lot of private (and public trackers) because it refuses to follow the Bittorrent spec. and hammers the tracker. I think they've sorted the bug that would report you as having uploaded a negative amount of data, which resulted in you being banned for leeching. The developer's also a massive cock who refuses to fix bugs like the former, claiming that they are "features".
License: Free.
BitRocket
Like Transmission only not banned from everywhere. It's small, looks and behaves like a proper Mac app. and does the job well. It shows your upload and download speeds in the Dock, which is nice, but it doesn't do a good job of telling you how much you've uploaded.
License: Free.
BitsOnWheels
Similar to BitRocket and Transmission but has fancy visual effects. If you want a 3D dynamic image of the swarm, then go for this.
License: Free.
Azureus
The grand-daddy of all Bittorrent applications. It also looks horrible and consumes far more memory and CPU cycles than anything that runs 24/7 should, mainly because it runs in Java. It's the only client on the Mac that supports selective downloading so you might want to keep around for when you just need one file from your Linux ISOs.
License: Free.
Acquisition
A Mac P2P client that looks like iTunes and actually integrates with iTunes. It also supports Bittorrent, allow you to play back media while it is still downloading, has all the connection/network features you'd expect and some parental controls to boot.
License: Shareware, $18.99 to buy.
IIId. Chat Clients
Adium
Whether you use MSN, AIM, ICQ, Jabber, GTalk, YIM, .Mac, Gadu-Gadu etc. etc., Adium supports it. It's also ridiculously customisable, so you can make it as flashy or as minimalist as you like. Go to AdiumXtras for message styles, contact list layouts, dock icons and more galore. It's now out of beta and is twice as awesome.
License: Free
aMSN
It looks horrible and feels horrible but it's the only MSN client on the Mac that supports the iSight. So if you want to flash your lithe and supple young body for pervy old men, irrespective of your gender, then keep aMSN around.
License: Free
Mercury Messenger
Another MSN client that supports the iSight, only this one is written in Java. It also dumps all the config and log files in your Home directory, which is annoying as hell.
License: Free.
Colloquy
One of the many IRC clients for OSX, though all seem to leave a bit to be desired. This one has an added emphasis on creating a nice-looking GUI.
License: Free
Conversation
Conversation is the IRC client I use for those rare times that I do. I don't really know much about IRC, but this is nice.
License: Free
jIRCii
Endless Mike said, "This became my IRC client of choice immediately after downloading it. It's pretty similar to mIRC for Windows, which was what I was looking for."
License: Free
IIIe. RSS Aggregators
Newsfire
From goon Suck, "Amazingly Mac-like RSS reader that's beautiful (especially if you don't go crazy with colored groups in the left pane), sleek, fast, and simple. This is the first shareware program I ever registered, and I don't regret it. Strongly recommended."
License: trial that nags you a lot, €16.99 (US$19.51 at current rates)
NetNewsWire
Suck again, "Most people prefer this for their RSS needs. I found the interface to be a bit cluttered and overwhelming, but it seems like I'm in the minority. It's a great product for many people, especially because Newsfire doesn't have a free version."
License: Lite is free, regular is $24.95 after 30-day trial
FeedPopper
I love this one. FeedPopper is an RSS Aggregator that... doesn't aggregate. It pops a little notice up in the corner of the screen when your feeds update, and is the most unique approach to RSS that I've seen on the Mac.
License: Free
Vienna
Matt Gloss said, "I use Vienna for my RSS reader. It works similarly to NetNewsWire, but it's not as bloated and it's free."
License: Free.
IV. Audio
Cog
The closest thing to a Winamp equivalent on OS X. Supports MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG and other more obscure codecs. Useful if you don't like iTunes or don't want the library features and just want something that will play songs you drag into the playlist.
License: Free.
Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes
More AppleScripts for various functions in iTunes than you can shake a stick at. Have a look through the site to see if there's something that will fill a need of yours because you will find something you like.
Audio Recorder
Need to quickly record something, or like recording your lectures on your *Book? This is simple and straight to the point. And if you didn't know, your *Book has a microphone built-in
License: Free
iScrobbler
iScrobbler is the iTunes plugin for last.fm, a great website that will probably enable you to find new bands you'll like. iScrobbler keeps track of the music you've been listening to and auto-updates your last.fm profile. Lots of goons like this.
License: Free
iPlaylist
All this does is export your iTunes library to an html file, allowing anyone on the internet to see what music you have. I've found it useful in the past when making mixes for people, or I guess you can show off your gigantic e-penis.
License: Free
Senuti
Senuti is great. All it does is take songs off your iPod and let you put them on your computer's hard drive. It actually makes your iPod a viable backup for your music in case your hard drive gets fried.
License: Free
Xiph.org Quicktime Components
This allows you to listen to your OGG files in iTunes, if you're into that sort of thing.
License: Free
Perian
Plugin for Quicktime that will allow it to play AVI and FLV, 3ivX, DivX, Flash Screen Video, MS-MPEG4, Sorenson H.263, Truemotion VP6, and Xvid, AVI support for: AAC, AC3 Audio using A52Codec, H.264, MPEG4, and VBR MP3. Think of it as the Swiss Army Knife of QT plugins.
License: Free.
Max
Simple CD ripper for OS X; can generate audio in over 20 compressed and uncompressed formats including MP3, Ogg (Vorbis), FLAC, AAC, Apple Lossless, Monkey's Audio, WavPack, Speex, AIFF, and WAVE. It can also convert between formats.
License: Free.
V. Video
NicePlayer
It's a Quicktime replacement that can do everything that every other media player can, only better. It takes advantage of Quicktime's plugins and it's possible to add more codecs to extend functionality. It has a nice interface, has playlists, plays .wmv files really well, and scales movies nicely if you like to watch them while working in Word.
License: Free.
Handbrake
GuyGizmo mentioned this one. "Best DVD ripping and encoding tool I've ever used. It makes something that can typically be very difficult and annoying very easy and painless. And it produces great looking files, too." It's now been forked because the developer's not done anything with it. Find the new version here under the name MediaFork.
License: Free
Visual Hub
A utility to easily convert video based on the free utility iSquint. It's much-loved around these parts. If you have a moral objection to giving people money then you can still find iSquint here.
License: $23.32
ffmpegx
Gleng said, "ffmpegx should be in the video section. It's an audio / video converter that has so far handled everything I've thrown at it with no fuss. I use it for converting DVD to DivX, anything to DVD, and making compressed, scaled down videos for my GP2X. It works like a charm!"
License: Free.
VLC
The daddy of all video players, pretty much. This can handle almost everything you throw at it. The interface is clunky and difficult to use compared to other programs but the vast codec library outweighs that. It can play audio too.
License: Free
MPlayer
A not-bad video player that can handle some video files others won't. I don't use it much, but it's worth having around. If VLC can't play it then there's a good chance MPlayer will.
License: Free
Flip4Mac
Despite the lame name, this is a handy program. It lets you view WMV files in Safari relatively painlessly, and it's free now!
License: Free
VI. Images
Image Well
It's a small image resizer and it can upload to an FTP server too. Just enter the details, drag an image onto it, resize it with the sliders and hit "send". As easy as pie.
License: Free.
Xee
From japii, "THE best image viewing software for OS X. This is essential for people who can't stand using a bloated program like iPhoto and for anyone who hates how you can't scroll through directories with Preview. It is also good for people just coming from XP because it operates exactly like Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. The only thing is by default Page Up and Page Down are the keys used to scroll through a directory.
License: Free
Chocoflop
It's MS Paint for Mac but with layers. I can't get the hang of it for image editing but for producing cheesy MS Paints of Dr. Doom shouting RICHARRRRRDs, then this is all you need.
License: Free
Pixen
crazysim said, "Pixen is a pixel editor. It's very polished and has layers and animation support." It's pretty much made for pixel artists, and it's good at that.
License: Free
ComicBookLover
This is most easily described as iTunes for comic books. It's polished and a breeze to use, and organizable by everything from main character to inker. This one's got the BSS seal of approval!
License: $24.95
FFView
FFView makes reading .cbz and .cbr files on your computer very easy. Also has some speech recognition capability!
License: Free
VII. Control
Sailing Clicker
Lets you control your Mac from your mobile phone or PDA. You can control slideshows, iTunes, DVD playing software etc. - think of this as an alternative to the Apple Remote and one with far more features and functionality.
License: $23.95
Quicksilver
An application launcher and much more -- including calculator, iTunes controller, and numerous plugins available. It's one of the most oft-cited great programs, it clears up dock space, and basically, if you don't have it, get it now. Absolutely essential for many folks.
License: Free
Growl
Atrus said, "Growl is a notification system for Mac OS X: it allows applications that support Growl to send you notifications. For example, it will display the sender, subject, and part of the body when new mail arrives. Or, with any one of these iTunes controllers, display the currently played song information. A lot of other things depending on the application. It can be as simple or complex as you want it, but it will save you time by displaying information without switching applications."
License: Free
Desktop Manager or Virtue
Virtual Desktops for Mac. This is admittedly de-valued now that Spaces is on the way in Leopard, but if you just can't wait, this software could hold you over. Some people prefer Virtue.
License: Free
SynergyKM
Again from Atrus, "Have two or more computers each with their own screen? Want to control all of them with one keyboard/mouse but want to see all screens at once? Look no further. This is Synergy but with a GUI for Mac. Easy to set up and will work with any other computer running Synergy (reguardless of platform). You will not be disapointed!"
License: Free
Synergy Classic
nelkon and parker brings us this different Synergy: "I love this little app. It basically allows you to control itunes using keyboard shortcuts... doesn't sound like much, but it presents information to you so beautifully. Also its completely transparent... no extra menu icons, no extra dock icons... just synergy!"
License: €5
Path Finder
The Finder sucks huge hairy monkey balls and there's no-one out there who will deny that once they try to do anything more than dumping all their files in "Documents". Fortunately, Path Finder is a Finder replacement that is just way, way better: tabs, easy navigation, handles network shares better, has stuffit built in, can slideshow images within itself, has Spotlight integrated etc. Really worth checking out.
License: $34.95
VIII. Beauty
Uno
Let's face it, for all they talk about things "just working", Apple are shit at creating a unified GUI. iTunes, Mail, Safari, the Finder, iWork, iLife - they all alternate between brushed metal and the other smooth style Apple have. Uno introduces the dropped menu-bar style and allows you to have all windows and apps as either metal or plain style. It's hard to describe but once you use it, you'll wonder why Apple didn't do this from the off.
License: Free
CandyBar
The default icons look pretty horrible too. CandyBar is a nice little way of changing individual icons or all of them at once. You can download icons from InterfaceLift or from the Icon Factory. The latter offers their icons in .icontainer format, which CandyBar will apply for you.
License:Shareware, $12.95. It doesn't nag you so you can try it for a long time.
Shapeshifter
Like WindowBlinds but for OS X. If you don't like the default Aqua theme then you can use this to apply other skins for OS X, which you can get from places like InterfaceLift or Mac Themes. It's now a Universal Binary so it runs well on Intel Macs.
License: $20, free trial.
IX. Science & Education
Schoolhouse
This is a great program for college folks. Keep on top of when your homework's due, have your professor's contact info at the click of a button, and keep on top of that ever-plummeting GPA. Here's a link to the beta of Schoolhouse 2. Also consider Task List, which is free, or Assignment Tracker, which is $5 (thanks to Wolffenstein for the last two links).
License: Free
Sente
G5ANDY told us about this one. "An absolutely must have for social science researchers, it's really itunes for research. It can be configured to connect to psychinfo, pubmed, media databases and any electronic database that uses z39.50 encoding. You can link .pdfs to entries and compile bibiographies in any publication format. Customer support is great, about 3 hours between responses.
License: $50, one month trial
Celestia
The free, incredibly expansive planetarium. At least check it out, you all know space is awesome.
License: Free
Stellarium
A little more space software couldn't hurt, right? This is a bit more traditional, though. Instead of flying through the cosmos, you get to look at things as you'd see them from Earth. It's a real-time starmap!
License: Free
Genius
Genius is a "smart" flashcard program. It helps you study and remembers what you have trouble learning, and grills you on it more. It's great, especially if taking a class that relies heavily on memorization.
License: Free
X. Reading & Writing
Writeroom
WriteRoom is designed with easily distracted folks in mind. It's a full-screen text editor with very few features, aside from auto-save, word-count and other basic features. It's designed to keep you from checking your email, or IMs, or whatever, and it's pretty good at that. Great for when you need to just buckle down and write that paper.
License: v.2 is shareware and costs $24.95. v.1 is still around and is free
CeltX
So sayeth _rustedshut_: "This is a screenplay/script app. And it's loving awesome! Sifutoast and I have been cowriting a comedy for awhile. We really haven't been able to collaborate enough until this mother fucker came out. The script is saved on a Celtx server. You login via the app and it downloads the last saved/uploaded one. The Mac version has a great interface and an average Finder install- I'm a big fan of customized Finder backgrounds for OSX installs (Adium, Alarm Clock, Quicksilver)- There's a lot of little features we've found while writing. It uses tabbed document browsing, notes (inserted anywhere, accessable by a little icon), character and actor portfolios, customizable links in your script where you can double click and have a song, video or pic pop up and some other stuff. I was using Final Draft which costs money and not nearly as good."
License: Free
TextMate
The amount of appreciation for this program cannot be expressed enough. It's loaded with useful features, such as text autocompletion, "folding" away sections of code, and more.
License: €39, 30 day trial
CheckOff
This link is thanks to Krispy Kareem. It's a program that sits in your menu bar and functions as an expandable to-do list, quite useful to keep organised.
License: Free.
Yojimbo
I recently saw this recommended as a note organizer. It's quite worth it -- it recognizes serial codes, bookmarks, web archives, photos, and tons more to keep you organized and your information available at your command.
License: $39, one month trial
Sidenote
Sidenote is like Stickies, only far less obtrusive, and it's neat because it slides out the side of your screen like a drawer.
License: Free
Journler
Journler has taken the place of the now-pay-for MacJournal. It's prettier-looking, too.
License: Free.
VoodooPad
VooDooPad is like a non-online Wiki. It's hard to describe, but it can be used for any number of things. It's great for classes that teach lots of new, complex concepts. Although it's shareware, they also offer VoodooPad Lite, which is free but has fewer features.
License: Shareware, $24.95 to buy
SubEthaEdit
Another code editor. Its claim to fame is its collaborative editing feature, whereby Mac users can connect via Bonjour and work on the same document simultaneously.
License: Newer version costs $30, but the older version can be had on their site for free.
BBEdit
A pretty feature-rich code editor, but nothing too outstanding about it. It's just one of those programs that people seem to enjoy once they work with it for a while.
License: $199, but it has its free little cousin, TextWrangler.
XI. Widgets
iStat Nano and iStat Pro
iStat Nano has all the system information (CPU, RAM, Hard drives, Internet/Ethernet/Wireless, Uptime, Battery, Temperatures, Fan Speeds) you ever wanted inside one small widget. iStat Pro is the same but in an easier to read format, although the widget is spatially bigger as a result.
License: Free.
AppUpdate
Keep track of which of your applications have been updated, and when.
License: Free.
Image Shackle
As far as I know, no relationship whatsoever to Imageshack. This lets you quickly resize images.
License: Free.
MiniBatteryStatus
A small battery display for the Dashboard. The real grace of this one is that it can given Growl notifications when the battery is full, when you come off mains power and when the battery falls below a user-defined percentage. It's excellent for spotting that the power cable has come out without you noticing or that your battery is about to go dead.
License: Free.
Coach Potato
ArgaWarga said, "a wonderful (if slightly buggy) widget that automatically downloads TV listings for your area (US and Canada). Pretty simple to set up once you know what you're doing, just go to the website on the back of the widget and register with Zap2it labs."
License: Free.
Egg Timer Widget
It's a widget that will play a chime when the timer hits zero. It's very simplistic but if you just want a bare-bones egg timer then this does the job. For more alert and timer options, look at Minuter under the Misc. section below.
License: Free.
iCal Events
Lists all the events that you have within iCal but as a widget. If waiting 5 seconds for iCal to start is too much effort then this is what you want.
License:Free.
On Tour
ArgaWarga said, "OnTour is a simple widget that scans your iTunes library, then finds bands that are playing in your area. It also displays all the bands coming to that area, useful if you live in a distant college town like I do and want to know what local stuff is happening along with stuff in the big city."
License: Free
XII. Misc
uhhh....apples are gay?
XIIa. Alarm clocks/timers
Minuteur
Possibly the greatest eggtimer application I've ever seen. It's a doddle to set up the timer and then it can either play a sound, show a Growl notification or turn the entire screen white or black to let you know the timer has ended. The later mode will allow you to select a 5, 10 or 15 minute extension of the timer, which is a nice touch. Really worth checking out.
License: Free.
Alarm Clock 2
Simple alarm clock that will play any song, playlist or podcast in your iTunes library.
License: Free.
MP3 Alarm Clock
This is another simple alarm clock but it will run on any version of OS X since 10.2.
License: Free.
iTaf
It's another alarm that integrates with iTunes and plays music to wake you up. What more can I say?
License: Free.
XIIb. Everything else
MacSaber
Wish you were Luke, busy decapitating stormtroopers with your lightsabre before having incestuous IM conversations with your sister? Try MacSaber to turn your Macbook into a lightsabre.
License: Free.
MacFamilyTree
This is pretty decent genealogy software. Perhaps tonelok can tell us more.
License: $49
iStache
Thanks to unruly: "iStache is a simple image editor with one purpose in mind. Adding various mustaches to pictures. Man, I love Mac software "
License: Free
Meteorologist
A great program that keeps the current weather in your menu bar. Think Weatherbug, but not crap.
License: Free
Weatherman X
Squishy Buddha said, "it's free, much cooler than Meteorologist, and it'll actually work on a new installation. (Most current version of Meteorologist doesn't without a hack). It's got a bunch more features, including a Radar function within the menu.
License: 30-day trial, $10 to register
Combine PDFs
Does exactly what it says on the tin. Can also create PDFs from pictures and you can rearrange pages to suit before you save the final .PDF.
License: Free.
Mactracker
Detailed, updated, searchable database of every Apple computer (and most other Apple products) ever made.

Yes, but it was still doing it. Even with the fan speed program you told me about. I went to the apple store and showed them. They think the back light might be going out so they gave me a new one. I went a head and upgrade to the 2.4ghz 256mg vram 15" version. So far so good on it no flicker. :headbang: Even picked up a wireless mighty mouse.

i know a bunch of you have limewire listed,
stay far away from it, even with peerguardian.
it's WAY easier to catch people using limewire and its so spammed anymore anyway..
also, SMSTrackkid, Sophos antivirus bogs every system the hell down.
remove it, and you'll see that your system is AT LEAST 50% faster.
(i know you go to ku, its hard to find, but they have said that you dont HAVE to run an antivirus, just for the network authentication at the beginning of the semester.)
my list:
*CS3 Suite
*Lightroom
*Candybar and Pixadex - for icon changing and organization
*Shapeshifter - really solid interface skinning
*Sentui - Take songs off of ipods (it's one way, but REALLY fast and organizes/imports everything into itunes.
*Adium - Best AIM/MSN/Yahoo/etc program out there.
*iStat Pro - replaces the menu items like time, battery, and adds more like temperature, network throughput. very nice, like the dashboard widget.
*Audio Hijack Pro - Record from any source on your computer, even individual programs. it'll also allow you to put effects on programs audio, so if you've got a movie with a really low db level, you can put a gain filter on and bump it up!
i'll try to think of more..

Settings as a good compromise for video size/quality vs. File size.
700mb or more if your doing it by size anything less isnt great. anyhting a lot biger takes up WAY to much space for what your doing.
btw sushi were still waiting damn it lol

the only downside is that it isnt free - it loads in the appearance then doesnt take any memory afterwards, just FYI.

SHADES - Another cool App for us desktop users thats just like the brightness feature on a laptop that allows you to dim your monitor. Say for instance someone is watching a movie or sleeping in the same room. Or maybe you are hung over or late to wake and the bright monitor hurts your eyes.....then this is for you!

not at all, now you may have a few skins here that arent made properly or have a corrupted file that tend to not play well with osx, but osx will let you know and all you do is switch back to the default theme or another :headbang:

honestly unless you are doing just very basic XP stuff just do bootcamp. Bootcamp allows you to fully "boot" XP where paralells or VMware which just resumes XP as an image it wont allow you to fully utilize things like your video card. for me i love bootcamp over paralells and VMware because i can play all my games like HL2. but i cant do that with paralell or vmware. the only downside is you have to restart your machine.

Here is a question for everybody on update OS on Macs. With PCs I NEVER trusted doing an OS upgrade. I always wiped the drive and started fresh. Should I worry about that with the MAC. Should I just put in the leopard disk and upgrade?

A: The Boot Camp in Leopard will be a lot better than it currently is. The largest improvement will be the fact that you can put your OS X operating system to sleep instead of having to shut it down before booting into windows.
B: With OS X, you're safe to upgrade any time. Because programs dont modify many files in the filesystem, there's a ton less that can go wrong and the whole process is a lot less messy. The only thing i'd suggest doing before you upgrade is repairing permissions (though it's widely debated whether or not this actually does anything..). Oh, and backing up vital data is a good idea, but you should be doing that anyway!

Sweet thanks. No vital information, just music, pictures and movies. So I guess just put the disc in and let it update.
yeah bootcamp will be awesome
and jsut throw the cd in like he said above its a lot simpler of a process. you click like 4 buttons then let its do its thing for like 45 minutes and its ready to do. i am picking it up at 6pm friday!

Ok, here is my problem, I have a Buffalo 250gb external usb 2.0 hd. My problem is to get it to mount on my desktop I have to have it turned on Auto(switch on the back) and powered on, then turn on my mac.
Once it is mounted if I eject it, unplug it, turn it off or even do a mac restart then I loose it and cannot get it to mount again until I shut down the mac, turn the power off on the hd then wait about 10 seconds and then turn back on, then after all that I can restart the mac.
I already tried repairing disc permissions and I repaired the mac hd but it didn't give me options to repair the permissions on the external.
I have also tried turning the switch on back from auto to manual with no luck.
Any ideas?

Now in my new Macbook it has 2x512 sticks and i am thinking about jsut picking up 1 1gb stick at microcenter for $32 and see if it gives me any problems. If it does ill just return it rather than dealing with newegg returns/shipping.
Ill report this weekend on if the ram i get for the macbook works, but honeslt i dont need much more ram for a notetaking laptop, but i might end up buying another 1gb stick for the iMac.
Ill let everybody know but so far mixing of non name brand ram has not had an effect on my computers at all, and my computers work fine, and it accepted it fine, so i didnt have any crashing programs or anything like that.

hmmmm I wonder how much 2g sticks are. Would be nice to upgrade my ram.
Anybody have any recommendations for hard drives. Thinking upgrading my hard drive, it came with the 160, but that is getting eaten up fast. I may actually just pick up like a 160-200 firewire external drive from MAC.

do you have a macbook laptop? if so it is going to be hard to upgrade your internal, especially from mac its extremely expensive to go the 250gb MBP harddrive route.
also how much ram does your mac mobo support? unless you just picked up the newest macbook in the last wek or 2 with the new chipset like i did it will only support 2gb total. I have heard there is a way to go 3 gb but im not sure about that. If thats so then you will only be able to put 2 1gb stick in. if not then you can go 2x2gb sticks.
For the harddrive its hard to find a harddrive in the 160 that small with firewire. 350 and up is your best bet with firewire as it costs more. heck there are 350gb usb 2.0 harddrives at best buy right now for $80
I run my internal harddrives on both my macs, then i just have 1 older usb external right now. I am looking at another one as well in firewire 400. or if you have a newer mbp you could even go firewire 800 which is amazing lol.

Yes it is a MB Pro. It should be able to support 4gigs of ram. When I was looking to buy it Apple would let me upgrade to 4gigs I just didn't want to pay for it.
I'll probably grab a external hard drive before I leave.
yeah the 4gb upgrade from apple is like 700 bucks when you can get the same thing for like 120 at newegg lol.

yeah exactly. So I figure the laptop should be able to handle it, I just don't want to pay for it.
thats why you just go with newegg, install it yourself and save over $500 lol.
and the small change the ram gives you problems with like programs crashing ect. just return it any possibly try a different brand, because they shouldnt really give you a problem atleast mine didnt.

Ok guys, help me out here.
I am trying to make a legal backup of a DVD Movie I own.
I have handbrake and Toast Titanium
In Handbrake what are the formats or presets I should use?
I know in DVD shrink on a PC it puts it in a Audio TS and Video TS folders, is it different with Handbrake? I want it to be just like a regular DVD where I can put it in the player and watch it.

I've done a lot of stuff with handbrake, but it was to dumb it down for my laptop so I can't help you to much on good movie settings. For full DVD backups I have been using http://www.mactheripper.org/ Mac the ripper and it has been doing pretty good. It only screwed up on a couple movies, but handbrake wouldn't do the same movie either.
just do simmiler settings then burn the single file imo, jsut mess around with a few dvds until you get it right the settings are for quality purposes so the higher its set the better quality and the bigger the file it is. just dont make a movie that is bigger than what your dvd can hold.

transmission is a good one but lacks control. Azerus is powerful, but is also bloated with this new vuze shit. i wish Utorrent would seriously port over to the mac. i would even pay 10 bux for it. I use azerus and am pretty happy tho.
About the hard drive, this is the one im buying in a few weeks to swap out.

or there is a 320gb 5400 rpm one i am looking at.... as far as apple doing it im not sure how much they charge, and im sure you can only use apple certified parts and probably have to buy from them. My warranty is up so i dont have to worry much about it, and its a pretty simple process. best bet would be to call apple support or go down to the store or check the forums, ill see what i can find about apple tech doing it.

The crappy thing about Azureus is the newest version hasn't bee approved with acid yet. So ever time I start I have to stop the auto update it has. Sadly I missed it this time. :nonod: So I have to uninstall and reload the last version, but I loose my items I'm currently downloading and seeding and screw up my ratio.
I saw that 320 gig one that is the one I'm kinda looking at. One of the reviews said he just installed it in a MBP and was extremely happy with it.
and if I can get my hands on these before I leave I'll be happy.

make sure your mac can support 4gb of ram only the newest macbooks/mbp/imacs can take more than 2gb fyi.
so only that santa rosa macbooks/macbook pros can accept up to 4gb of ram

does she have a webcam? I believe that macs require powered audio in, so you could not directly plug the guitar into the computer and record. she may be able to plug directly from the amp to the computer and that might do the trick, especially if the amp has headphone out, you could just get a male to male cord.
a free program that would be good to record on is called audacity

Do Mac users now need Anti-Virus?
The new iAntivirus is being pitched at Mac users previously thought to be safe from the threat of viruses and Web nasties. The program's creator PC Tools says the idea Macs are safe is a myth.
While PC Tools CEO Cimon Clausen says Macs are "relatively safe", the company is nevertheless using the latest round of Mac specific threats to promote iAntivirus. One of these includes the AppleScript.THT trojan, reportedly affecting Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5.
Mind you, even PC Tools' own data lists just 2% of Mac specific threats as viruses - the rest includes keyloggers, hacking tools, and backdoors. The PC Tools iAntivirus software is a "lightweight" anti-malware tool that only targets Mac specific threats.
Maybe Mac users won't have the last laugh about being virus-free for long.

That's just a 'facelift' to get more people to buy new ones until the aluminum ones come out, which I did. :lol2: Apple is going towards the Aluminum tract for all their computers (iMac, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, etc) and it is finally time to get the Macbook on the bus too. It's easy to see what they could do to the Macbook, but I'm not sure how they'll improve the Macbook Pro (make it thinner? something totally new? who knows). Guess we'll see in a month or two.

I sold my white 2.4 Ghz Macbook (bought @ end of Feb/sold end of June) while I could still get basically what I paid for it back. Could be hit or miss once the aluminum ones come out, people would pay a premium to hold on to the throwback in good shape or they just wouldnt give a damn anymore. However, until the new ones come out, I'm sitting here without a Mac and I miss it a lot more than I thought I would. :(

hmmmm. May have to hold off on upgrading the wife then. I mean she has a G4 12"laptop so anything would technically be an upgrade. But I would like to wait until the ones styled after the MBPs come out.

Is anybody running leopard on a G4 processor. Just wondering how it will run on my wifes powerbook, its 512m of ram, and a 1.5g processor. Leopard asks for 512m of ram and only 847mgh processor. Thinking about upgrading her.

Latest rumors on the Macbook: One piece aluminum case, GLASS multi-touch trackpad (not sure how I feel about that one), larger screens (14"-15.6"), thinner and rounder (more like Macbook Air), also talk of Apple doing their own custom chip set (guess Apple is getting tired of Intel's integrated graphics = suckage).

Forgot to say WHEN they figure the new ones will be out. Those two sites say Sept, but I personally expect them a little sooner than that. Expect an announcement either this tomorrow (July 29th) or next (Aug 5th).

Next-Gen Macs Will Not Use Intel Chips, Some Say
Apple may be moving away from Intel.
The blogosphere is buzzing about rumors the next generation of MacBooks will ditch the familiar Intel chipsets. Apple's been building Intel-based computers since '06, when it announced it would stop using PowerPC processors in favor of Intel.
Now sources, such as AppleInsider, are reporting "people familiar with (Apple's) plans" are saying change is on the way. Apple's options could include going back to its own proprietary chipset or it could strike a new deal with a manufacturer such as NVIDIA or VIA. AppleInsider is careful to point out "This should not be confused with the primary CPU, which will continue to come from Intel."
Why the Switch?
So why the sudden switch? Theories point to everything from a need for Apple to set itself apart from the competition -- two execs have made recent comments about "state-of-the-art products" on the way that will catch competitors off-guard. Others suggest Apple's move away from Intel is an attempt to use a chipset that uses less power.
We can expect to hear something official in the next month or two, when the new MacBooks are revealed. Stay tuned.

The Apple Store is down and the Let's Rock event is happening now. What goodies will we be getting?
iTunes8 has already been announced; available for download today.
edit: Kind of disappointed with the event. Small redesign to the Touch, no Macbook update (which is what I am dying to hear!). I bolded the highlights below.
11:00AM EST Apple Online Store is down! It is getting closer!!
11:44AM EST Several people in Barbarian Group t-shirts have been spotted outside the event. Hmm.. that would corroborate with the Magnetosphere iTunes visualizer rumor.
12:40PM EST T-minus 20 minutes to the start of the event.
12:55PM EST Reporters are filing into the hall with rock tunes bumping!
1:01PM EST Steve Jobs just took the stage. Energetic and skinny, we hear.
1:02PM EST Over 8.5 million songs are available on iTunes. 125,000 podcasts, 30,000 TV shows, 2,600 movies, and 3,000 applications for iPhone and iPod Touch. 65 million user accounts on iTunes.
1:06PM EST“iTunes is getting some new content”. First is High Definition TV shows. HD shows will be $2.99 for computer or Apple TV.
1:07PM EST iTunes 8. The rumored grid view is true. Genius playlists can be made with just one click.
1:08PM EST NBC is back!
1:09PM EST iTunes 8 will be available for download today.
1:10PM ESTGenius information gets sent to iTunes to give them your musical tastes. It’s sent anonymously, and is completely optional.
1:13PM EST Steve just played a John Mayer song. The internet l0lz.
1:15PM EST iPod has a 73.4% marketshare. Followed by 8.6% for SanDisk, Microsoft with 2.6 and other for 15.4%.
1:17PM EST The 80GB is being upgraded to 120GB, and the 160GB is being discontinued.
1:19PM EST New skinny nanos are true. Skinny, rounded, and a lot like the 2nd gen Nano. Portrait aspect ratio plus the exact same resolution display.
1:21PM EST They have added curved glass over the screen, new user interface, and an accelerometer!
1:23PM EST Shake to shuffle is true. Shake the iPod nano, and it will shuffle.

1:30PM EST New accessories including headphones and armbands. The headphone, actually, has an in-band control feature to have volume control, playback control (next, prev, play pause) from the button. There’s also a microphone on the back that works with the voice recording app. These will be $29 next month.

Apple stock tumbles nearly 11% on false report of Jobs' heart attack
'Citizen journalist' report sends shares below $100 for the first time since May 2007
October 3, 2008 (Computerworld) Reports early Friday that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had suffered a major heart attack briefly sent company shares sliding, but prices rebounded after Apple denied that Jobs had been hospitalized.
Shares fell by more than 10% almost immediately after someone posted a report on a CNN user-content site claiming that Jobs had been rushed to a hospital after a heart attack. The piece on CNN's iReport.com, an unfiltered site that welcomes posts from "citizen journalists," cited an anonymous source who claimed that paramedics had been called after Jobs suffered "severe chest pains and shortness of breath." The report has been yanked from iReport.com.
Apple quickly denied the report, telling reporters that the account was "not true."
The company's stock took a dive on the news, dropping from its morning high of $106.19 to as low as $94.65, a fall of 10.9%. The brief dip under $100 was the first time since May 2007 that Apple's share price has slipped under that mark.
Apple's shares rebounded later Friday. As of about 12:30 p.m. EDT, shares were at $104.47.
Jobs' health has been an on-and-off concern on the part of some investors since June, when he appeared gaunt at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference. His appearance then fueled speculation that he was again ill. In August 2004, Jobs announced he had had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his pancreas.
In August, the Bloomberg financial news service inadvertently posted Jobs' obituary. News organizations typically write obituaries of notables while they're still alive and regularly update them so that the stories are quickly available.
At the time, Apple's stock fell slightly but, as it did today, later rebounded.

New Mac user checking in. I bought my first Mac this past weekend and am absolutely loving it. I've been using Windows since the 3.1 days and regret not switching sooner. It's amazing how much faster this thing runs without all the bullshit that a Windows machine has on it.
BTW, I picked up a Macbook Pro from NFM. It's the "old" style that they had discounted to get rid of them. There were only 3 left after they handed mine over.
The first post in this thread is very helpful! Thanks Sushi!

Early 2008 Macbook Pro.
Bombbuilder, Command + Click works to bring up the right click menu for pictures as well. After the menu pops up, scroll down to 'Image' then a sub-menu will open and click on 'Download Image to Desktop' or w/e it says. Forgot to say, you can use your regular Windows mouse as well and right click will work like you are used to.
I like on the new (aluminum) Macbook/Pros how you can set the bottom right corner of the track pad to act as the right click button. Pretty cool! :) I don't doubt that more manufacturers will start going to the button less track pad now. After using it for a week now, I'm surprised Apple was the first to think of this (or actually put it in to use).
edit: After re-reading your post, that isn't what you were asking. I'll look after class to see how to do what you are trying to do.

To view an image's link, you can right click, highlight 'image' and then click 'copy image address to clipboard.' Then paste it wherever you want; new tab, kcsr post, etc.

Apple's Jobs takes $1 salary, but holdings suffer
Apple CEO Jobs took $1 salary again in 2008, but Apple stock fall wipes out $500M in holdings
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- As he's done for the last decade, Apple Inc. Chief Executive Steve Jobs took home his customary $1 annual salary in 2008, but the economic meltdown and Apple's falling stock price whacked half a billion dollars off the value of his personal holdings in the company.
Apple said in a regulatory filing Wednesday that Jobs, 53, who holds 5.5 million shares of Apple's stock, hasn't sold any of the shares since rejoining the company in 1997. That means what he lacks in annual compensation is made up for in the enormous amount of stock he already holds -- a hoard that took a beating in 2008 amid fears about the Mac and iPhone maker's vulnerability to the U.S. recession.
Apple shares have lost more than half their value since the end of 2007, when they were trading at nearly $200 and Jobs' holdings were worth more than $1 billion. The stock finished Wednesday's trading session down $2.01, 2 percent, at $91.01, meaning Jobs' stake is worth around $500 million.
A big hit by any measure, the decline still barely dents Jobs' massive fortune, estimated by Forbes magazine earlier this year at $5.7 billion and ranking him 61st on the publication's list of the richest Americans.
Most of Jobs' wealth comes not from Apple but from the 138 million shares he owns of The Walt Disney Co., a 7.3 percent stake that makes him Disney's largest individual shareholder. Jobs scored the Disney stake through a brilliant deal in which he sold Pixar Animation Studios, a company he bought from George Lucas for $10 million in 1986, to Disney in a multibillion-dollar stock trade 20 years later.
Jobs' Disney holdings are now worth $3.2 billion, more than $1 billion less than the stock was worth last year.
Jobs has a similar relationship with Disney, where he serves on the board, as he does with Apple when it comes to pay. He doesn't take a salary for his work as a Disney director.
Apple's annual proxy filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission shows that its strategy is remarkably egalitarian when it comes to the CEO's compensation. The company doesn't reimburse Jobs for the perks that top executives usually get like home security systems or a chauffeur, but it did reward him in a big way in 1999 after he engineered an impressive turnaround at the company: Jobs' bonus that year was a $90 million Gulfstream V jet, whose operation Apple still helps pay for.
Apple said in the filing Wednesday that it reimbursed Jobs for $871,000 in expenses in 2008 for his use of the private plane on company business. In 2007, those costs were $776,000, and in 2006, it was $202,000.
Jobs' compensation hasn't been without controversy, however. The company was embroiled in a scandal two years ago over its mishandling of stock option awards, some of which went to Jobs.
At the height of the corporate "backdating" scandals that emerged in 2006, federal investigators began looking at Apple over possible criminal violations in the way the company handled its options, including an award of 7.5 million options given to Jobs in 2001.
Jobs never cashed out the options; they were canceled two years later while they were "underwater," or worthless, along with other outstanding options. Instead he was given millions of shares of restricted stock that make up nearly all of his current holdings.
Prosecutors closed the criminal investigation last year without filing charges, though two former executives -- former General Counsel Nancy Heinen and former Chief Financial Officer Fred Anderson -- were charged by the SEC over the so-called "backdating," or manipulating stock awards so they look like they were issued earlier than they were.
Apple eventually took an $84 million charge after it acknowledged it had backdated 6,428 grants between 1997 and 2002.
Jobs was in the news for another reason this week when he revealed before the Macworld trade show that a hormone imbalance has caused the weight loss that made him look gaunt at recent events. Jobs said he wanted to squash rumors that he is gravely ill.
Apple said Wednesday that its annual meeting is scheduled for Feb. 25 at the company's Cupertino headquarters.
The Associated Press calculations of total pay include executives' salary, bonus, incentives, perks, above-market returns on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock options and awards granted during the year. The calculations don't include changes in the present value of pension benefits.
Because Jobs didn't get a bonus or any of those other forms of compensation in 2008, his total pay is the same as the $1 salary the company lists in the summary compensation table of the proxy statement filed with the SEC.

Apple awarded iPhone patent
http://fortuneapple20.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/picture-61.png?w=263&h=395
Tim Cook must have known.
One day before Apple’s acting CEO told Wall Street analysts that his company would not stand for having its intellectual property “ripped off” — a remark clearly aimed at certain iPhone-like features of the Palm Pre — the U.S. Patent Office awarded Apple Patent No. No. 7479949.
This 358-page document, originally filed on Sept. 5, 2007, is the mother of all iPhone patents. Signed by 21 Apple (AAPL) employees — starting with Jobs, Steven P. and Forestall, Scott — it covers everything from the way a finger or fingers touch the screen to the heuristics that turn those touches into commands.
Other smartphones introduced since the iPhone came out have avoided using the multi-touch technology covered by this patent. The Palm Pre may have crossed the line. See Apple vs. Palm: Geeks with grudges.
Patents in the United States are enforced through civil lawsuits in Federal court. The patent holder will typically ask for monetary compensation and an injunction prohibiting further violations.
In order to prove infringement, the patent owner must establish that the accused infringer practices all of the requirements of at least one of the claims of the patent. The accused infringer has the right to challenge the validity of that patent, something Palm has already suggested it plans to do.
“If faced with legal action,” a Palm spokesperson said last week, “we are confident that we have the tools necessary to defend ourselves.”
Palm (PALM) shares were down more than 10% in mid-morning trading.

Apple, AT&T slapped with yet another iPhone 3G lawsuit
Still one more class-action lawsuit is claiming that the iPhone not only fails to live up to 3G speeds, but that it also prematurely develops hairline cracks in its outer casing.
Texas residents Alyce R. Payne, William French, Karen Michaels, and Lorna Harris filed the lengthy 23-page complaint in an Eastern Texas court yesterday on their own behalf as well as all customers who are not satisfied with their iPhone 3G purchase, claiming that Apple has committed breaches of contract and warranty, violating Texas business and commerce codes, and other infractions.
The suit is the second to be filed this week (among many others over the past several months) claiming the iPhone 3G performs poorly when connected via 3G because it "demand(s) too much power from the 3G bandwidths."
The plaintiffs also blame AT&T's infrastructure and name the exclusive carrier of the Apple-built smartphone as a co-defendant, claiming AT&T's system can't cope with the "overwhelming 3G signal" of the sheer number of iPhones sold.
They cite an Associated Press article on tests by Swedish engineering weekly Ny Teknik that concluded some handsets aren't sensitive enough to 3G signals and boost their signals to compensate, creating the network conflict. Subsequent tests, however, showed no hardware issue and instead suggested it was a network congestion issue.
Unusually, the suit cites as proof of poor 3G performance the August 2008 ruling in the United Kingdom requiring Apple to stop advertising the iPhone's ability to access "all parts of the Internet." However, that ruling did not consider 3G speeds, dealing instead with the iPhone's lack of Java and Flash support. Nonetheless, the UK court's decision is cited as an example of the iPhone not functioning properly "on the 3G network."
A Wired blog post is also part of the plaintiffs' evidence, quoting AT&T spokesman Brad Mays as saying iPhones were "performing great" even at the height of reported slowdowns and connection drops.
However, besides these typical claims, the suit is rare in alleging faulty manufacturing of the exterior plastic case.
"The iPhones have had well-known and documented issues regarding the premature 'wear-and-tear' of the iPhones' housing," the complaint says, "including the formation of hairline cracks in the iPhones' casing."
Although these issues weren't an issue with the original iPhone, which came with an aluminum backing, the iPhone 3G comes with a black or white hard plastic back that, just after launch, had triggered multiple complaints of stress around key points of the handsets. According to the lawsuit, cracks form "around the camera, near the volume rocker," and in other areas reported by users.
The company is believed to have knowingly shipped phones with the flaw even after it became an apparent problem. The suit spends several pages reproducing anonymous comments from Apple's forums and various other websites to show when the complaints first surfaced.
"I should've stuck to my old iPhone, the one with the aluminum back that probably wont crack," an Engadget reader comments. "I've never doubted the build quality of Apple products before but now I'm beginning to question it heavily."
Moreover, hardware defects aren't the only problems mentioned in the complaint. The plaintiffs list a raft of problems caused by the iPhone 2.0 software update and the subsequent 2.1 update, which they claim did not fix the original problems of "crashes, 'bricked' handsets, slower applications, a lag in the virtual keyboard, internet connection issues, and spotty call reception."
And while Apple itself positioned iPhone 2.1 as a fix for these key problems, the individuals filing the suit point to reports where many of the problems either weren't immediately fixed or had even "gotten worse" after the update. iPhone 2.2 has since appeared.
One of AppleInsider's own August 2008 reports is also presented as evidence that Apple was aware it had released a tarnished product. A personal email to a customer from Apple chief executive Steve Jobs acknowledged a bug and that a fix was enroute.
The representatives in the class are demanding typical damages but, if victorious, would also require Apple and AT&T to give up any profits earned by way of "misleading" advertising and post a disclaimer on the iPhone's packaging as well as all advertising materials. They are suing for at least $5 million, the established threshold under legal statutes.

Just did a google search and Safari itself doesn't support that action. Seems Internet Explorer and Firefox do though. Return of the (Refurbished) $99 iPhone 3G
AT&T is offering the 8GB iPhone 3G (black) for $99. The 16GB model is available in black or white for $199. That's a savings of $100 on both models.
As before, you have to sign up for a two-year contract, and you get a warranty of "at least 90 days"--which I suspect means 90 days. (AT&T's site doesn't seem to have any specifics on the warranty--anybody know the deets?).
Of course, the price tag of the phone itself isn't what stops most people--it's the monthly nut. The bare-minimum service and data plans will run you $70 per month (plus another few bucks in taxes and fees).

Apple execs rethinking iPhone pricing strategy for 2009
While the likelihood of Apple releasing new iPhones this year is all but certain, a discussion between analysts and Apple's top brass has also dropped clues that the iPhone's pricing may not be static this year.
Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein Research mentions in a research note that a discussion with Apple COO Tim Cook, CFO Petter Oppenheimer and worldwide marketing senior VP Phil Schiller point both to an upgrade to the touchscreen device as well as to the possibility of "different pricing/price points" this year, with Cook "examining iPhone's business model" for possible changes.
Cook and Schiller in particular have teased a "very exciting" 2009 for iPhones.
What these possible price changes would entail isn't divulged by the Apple executives, although Sacconaghi is quick to dampen rumors of an iPhone nano or a similar low-budget cellphone. Without naming any one of the executives as a source, he gathers from his investigations that the company isn't presently chasing such a concept.
Any future iPhone, he says, will probably have at least a web browser and access to the App Store, the latter of which has Cook, Oppenheimer and Schiller particularly "bullish" about the iPhone's success as it gives Apple an advantage over rival smartphone makers.
The firm's leaders are also adamant that iPhones won't come with hardware keyboards. A fixed set of keys reportedly makes it harder to implement different keyboards, such as for different languages, and would also make it harder for third-party developers hoping to use their own custom control schemes. Using the touchscreen as the primary input improves Apple's bottom line by letting it ship what's essentially the same phone across many different regions, the executives say.
No matter the changes to Apple's iPhone pricing structure, such a move wouldn't be uncharacteristic of the Cupertino, Calif. electronics giant. Each year of the iPhone's existence has had at least one major price shakeup: the iPhone's maximum price fell from $599 to $399 in 2007, while the iPhone 3G in 2008 not only reduced this top price to $299 but switched the behind-the-scenes profit model from revenue sharing with carriers to a heavy device subsidy.
But the Apple TV's position is considerably less optimistic, Sacconaghi warns. After his talk with the senior staffers, he understands that Apple views "lots of barriers" for the networkable media hub and doesn't see it as a current business cornerstone like it does iPhones, iPods and Macs.
Not to downplay the company's prospects, though, the Bernstein researcher says the management team is maintaining an "unwavering" level of belief in its guidance for the January-to-March quarter even as it has no intention of cutting prices; the upgraded plastic MacBook is selling well but is still being outsold by its more expensive aluminum cousins, according to the executives, who also see a lot of headroom in computer market share.
While Sacconaghi doesn't make many predictions, he repeats frequent expectations of an iPhone in summer and also believes Apple may update the iMac in March.

Cydia Opening Parallel Paid App Store for Jailbreak Apps
Cydia has been the hub of the iPhone gray market for some time now, but developer Jay Freeman is planning on turning the jailbroken app manager into a questionably licit competitor to the App Store.
Converting Cydia into a proper application store won't be complicated, and more or less amounts to Freeman adding a centralized payment service to the software. His competitive ambitions, though, aren't so subtle: He told the WSJ that "the overworking goal is to provide choice" and that he plans on match or beat Apple's commission for downloaded apps.
Paid apps are currently available in Cydia, but purchase has to be arranged on an app-by-app basis, usually through unwieldy product key schemes or PayPal. While a centralized Cydia payment system would make purchasing apps such as Snapture and PDAnet simpler and could breed innovation for potentially useful nonsanctioned apps, but it also provides a single, unified target for Apple should they decide to start hurling lawyers at the jailbreak scene. Though the company hasn't specifically responded to this announcement, it'd be naive to think they won't: in effect, Freeman, who has already hired a lawyer, has just announced that he plans on making money on a process that Apple claimed to be totally illegal just a few weeks ago. Good luck?

iPhone OS 3.0 is coming, preview on March 17th
We just got the announcement, iPhone OS 3.0 is coming. Set your clocks, mark your calendars. It's going down March 17th. Apparently, we'll get a sneak peak at the new OS, as well as a look at a brand new version of the SDK. Exciting stuff indeed, and we'll be there live at 10am PST (1pm EST) with the liveblog. Apple's calling this an "advance preview of what we're building," so we're not expecting anything ready to go as of the 17th, but hopefully this will allow developers to start building toward future functionality (hey, how about some push notifications?), and presumably users won't have too many months to wait after that for the real deal.

Running the disk utilities now to make sure nothing major (i.e. hard drive failure) is wrong. Not how I wanted to spend my morning. :lol2: I hadn't backed my data up since I installed this HDD last week either. Know for damn sure I'm doing it once these utilities are done and if everything is OK.
just did it on mine...its gonna make the loud beep, make sure that the mini dvi is plugged into the macbook AND hooked up to a monitor...
it took me 2 times to figure it out...but it works fine now..

Once I'm done with the disk utilities, I'll give the update another go. This worked out since it seemed I needed to repair my disk permissions anyway.
edit: I'm good to go now. Update is installed and HDD is fine too. Still have some permissions issues though; the utility won't fix them though. Any other way?

OSX will have a few permissions that remain that way, chances are they wont affect the os in any way and you will be fine

It was Front Row, iTunes and a couple other things. Havent had any issues yet, so didnt figure it'd be too big a deal. I just like to see nothing show up in that window though. :)

I am just like you, and i spent a fucking month searching finding WTF was wrong with my old one, come to find out that its pretty common for permissions in itunes/frontrow anything that has a large library. Along with other things.
If you copy the debug info and google it, usually you can find some fixes. But for mine, i found none and on apple support they said dont worry.
Hell i even tried a fresh install and still had the same permission errors.
