Well today I picked up a 87 325es off Tyler today.

Its a work in progress and is bone stock.

Plan:
Full detail (except the interior, Tyler did good on that)
Brakes & rotors
Shocks & springs (a drop is in order)
Replace:
Tails and gaskets
center console
glove box
Wheels (15's or 16's)
Valve Adjustment

Now to the pics

Today's Progress

I got it home and just had to play around with it. Cleaned the windows, also started war with some pesky ants in the trunk, and repainted a couple things... not much but its a start.

Really? I haven't had to many people go against them... I love how koni yellows ride so thats what I'd like to use, then I'll go gcs or springs, but first I'm trying these intrax... after some research they will drop me about 2.25 in... which will be nice

I liked the GC on my 88 325is but the installation required welding. AST offers the new hot setup for E30s but it's a bit pricey.

Just looked those up. They look really nice.

:yesnod:

EDIT: AST 5300 series have adjustable rebound as well as separate high and low speed compression adjustment.

Wow! I would love to have something like that for my pile. I wonder how linear the adjustments are.

No offense bro, but I think it is waaaaaaaay more than you are looking to spend unless you plan on competitive racing.

EDIT: The cheapest AST setup I see is about 2700.

Yep, Terry Fair @ Vorshlag. Good guy.

Believe it or not, AST recently reduced prices. They were priced considerably higher just a few months ago.

No man, exactly the opposite, tons of people swear by GC's on E30's! The top recommended setup people will tell you is Billy Sports with GC's.

Wheel wise I'm leaning towards some Axis OG San's in Gunmetal w/ a polished lip.

imo, the only acceptable suspension upgrades to an E30 start with converting to E36(z3/ti rear) stuff. if you aren't building an all out track monster, then regular E36 stuff will do--either way do obd2 m3 front control arms with 95 m3 cab's. you get a brake upgrade(if you use M3 front/Z3M rear then a HUGE brake upgrade), 5 lug wheel options as well as more readily available suspension upgrades that are better thought out.

after you have the spindles/brakes/etc, then just do some bilstein sports and some h/r races, or a hr coilover kit for a Z3.

just my .02 as i am a huge opponent of gc--just not a very well engineered product.

Just ordered my some Axis OG San's in Gunmetal with a polished lip... 15x8 w/ a +25 offset. Got em for $650 shipped brand new... very pumped plus its not a wheel I see a lot... and I'm too poor for Formula Meshes lol.

Also have springs on the way, paid for em this morning, should drop me about 2.25 inch. Next up will be shocks.

Just ordered my Blistein Sport's as well... this next week will be very fun waiting for all my parts lol

Congrats! 15x8s looks great on these cars. My buddy Doug runs 15x8 Kosei K1s on his 89 and I love the look. What size tire are you going with? You might get away with not rubbing with 205/55s. 225/50s would look the best though or even 225/45s.

I would go with the 225s especially since they are 8". Suck it up and roll the fenders if required. ;) One of the local tuner shops does fender rolling. I think Modified by KC does it and if I remember right, Chuong (Revline) has a fender roller available for rent.

You need to start coming around the E30 scene more. Then you can learn what is really up.

GCs are fairly good, but in the end it's just a coilover. Bilstein was a good choice, and koni would have been just as good. Damian has a fender roller that you can rent for fairly cheap. I would do 205/50 on the tire. It is slightly undersized, but trust me. :) My sig picture is 195/50/15. Don't worry about all of that 5 lug noise; It's unnecessary at the least (especially E36 stuff).

Almost forgot this. Similar wheel; not exactly the same though.

Yeah I'll be staying 4 lug, its an "e" so performance isn't really at the top of my list :lolg:

you know, i had a very lengthy retort as to why GC sucks big balls on E30's but i figured i was wasting my time. so i just stuck to the e36 portion of my reply.

at least i was right about one thing......

i mean really, who needs better suspension geometry?

e30's are becoming the new 240sx it seems. as long as it doesn't transfer as widely to the E36 i'll maintain my composure.

T.England
2010-06-16, 09:29 PM
How in any way would E36 components provide a better suspension geometry? Also, by using E36 stuff on an E30, your wheel selection decreases immensely. The front hubs on an E36 are placed further out creating less offset room. I would also like to add that 95% of E30's can't overpower the stock brakes with good pads and rotors; This is mainly due to weight and tire size/grip.

For the price, GC coils are competitive. AST/TcKlien/ect is double the cost. The main fault of GC is using a twin tube damper instead of a more sturdy monotube. This factor makes the ride quality much different. I do hate the creaking GC's camber plates provide.

Yeah, Bilsteins are monotube. . . thanks for reminding me? And GC simply offers a coilover conversion where you designate which damper you are using. I was making a comparison to GC's full setup, with (read*) Koni twin tube dampers, with ASTs superior monotube setup. Try to keep up.

Are you done E-thugging it now? Seems like you guys are a little over eager to defend each other. I was simply asking how E36 stuff provides a better suspension geometry.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if anyone wants to stretch tires, run silly offsets, and crazy camber that's all on them.

I don't have to like it but I do have to allow that people have different taste.

BUT....saying hella flush is a better setup for a performance set up (if you are indeed making that claim) is bullshit.

That's not hating. That's something I can prove with emperical evidence.

T.England

T.England

I said it wasn't required because the OP never said he wanted a track car. I asked a legitimate question on how the E36 stuff is better on an E30 and no one can seem to answer the claim. My original post didn't bash in any way. I simply stated that I wouldn't be too concerned with going 5 lug and that it is unnecessary for what he is using the car for.

What was hellflush about my statement? The fact that I suggested an undersized tire that wouldn't eat up his fender?

its not required cause the OP repeatedly said he was not interested in performance due to the car being a "e"...
no ones saying a $3k setup isnt nicer than a budget setup, but all the OP is going for is a look. tim was listing the best products actually in the OP's price range.

E36 suspension is better for the following reasons:
more camber with stock diameter springs
more caster without killing setback
better toe curve
more adaptable spindle
easily/cheaper replaceable struts
better/cheaper(when you compare equally) parts selection
bigger wheel bearings
5-lug hub--distibutes wheel load more even and cheap factory wheel selection is huge
better sway bar geometry/effectiveness when used with M3 struts/endlinks--reduced weight due to a smaller dia sway bar with increased roll stifness as compared to link on arm setup
rear steer geometry is far better on Z3/Ti trailing arms
etc, i can get into advanced geometry benefits as well, but i would be wasting my time i think.

as for GC, the problem is not in the shocks. the problem is with the sleeves. the sleeve location puts the spring too far down on the strut. take that with the fact you have to use such short springs to get desired ride height and what you have is a spring with absolutely no preload and massive gap on droop/poor bump travel before coil bind(esp with the ers springs) and the need to tune the hell out of the bumpstops. what happens is most people don't tune the bumpstops(which have pretty high rates) and since the bumpstops typically exceed the rate caps of the shocks, premature wear is an issue.

i'm sorry if i come off like a douche--i really don't mean to. sure i don't own an E30, but i think i have a pretty good handle on them. i simply suggested the E36 stuff as it is VERY cheap to aquire---race car or not, the benefits are worth it.

good luck with your build, i promise this is the last time i post in an E30 thread.

Also took the 325es badge off and pinstripe off, just need to get some adhesive remover to finish the job. Also shopping spacers bc I'll have to get one.

Also locally found a guy with tons of e30 stuff so I might have a full interior after this weekend.

Also have decided to do a plastic bumper swap, just gunna start with the front for now though. Should have my bilsteins Tuesday, springs mon or tues, yellow hi beams tues, brows next week as well. Also ordered a Bentley Manual and should be here Monday lol.

So today I did a couple things, first up I removed the pinstripe and glue.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e319/shortchevy/E30%20Build/IMG_0251.jpg

Then I repainted the grills and kidneys black

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e319/shortchevy/E30%20Build/IMG_0249.jpg

Then I had taken my antenna out and need some sort of plug. So I found a generic gasket from a parts store, flipped it inside out so it would fit, then I stacked two buttons, then a dime and took silicon and glued them all in and topped it off with a dime. Then took silicon and put a beer bottle cap on top for look... don't know how I feel about it yet but it looks way better than the half up antenna

So you did get an e30 afterall! Good to hear! (I bought Nick's 325e)

Did your pinstripe come off easily? Mine wasn't bad for being an 86.

Also, ever think of shadowlining it? I think it'd look great with those wheels.

It came off very easily, what do you mean by shadowlining?

It will look even better after I get those brows and my yellow hi-beams. Also I'll be putting a plastic bumper front end on it as well soon hopefully, front end is a little ugly right now.

What are people's thoughts on the antenna delete???

I'm in the process of doing it to mine right now. I chose to buy the OEM pieces though. I'm doing the rain guard then seeing how I like it, and slowly blacking more things out if necessary.

I have been thinking my next car would be an e60 545i or 550i 6mt... and I was considering keeping the e46 as a toy, but maybe I will have to look for a clean E30???

This is if I don't go down the dark road of "M" ownership again lol.

The reason for the e60... is more space. A coupe e46 is not the best family mobile. The price on the e30's makes me want to pull the trigger lol.

The 545i is no slouch either if you're willing to go older than the 550i. I was behind a 545i during a track day at HPT and had to wind out my E36 M3 pretty good to keep up to it.

Yeah I think matched with a true manual transmission it would be a good hauler and a fun DD. I may be limited to the 545 based on what out there. Finding a 550i manual close is hard for a decent price.

So as I said I waxed the e30 up today, also repainted the iS spoiler black for now... I think I'm gunna repaint it red to match. Also went through and replaced all my fuses and all kinds of shit works now lol so that was a nice surprise. Also replaced my side support hood hinge, it works way better than the old one.

One not so nice surprise was that my window switches showed up today (good) but they still don't work (not good) so now I'm thinking about tracking the power window relay and replacing that since I just replaced the fuses plus my sunroof works... so now time to track that down.

Story?

Something like this. . .

"Great the front is done, lets do the rear. Hey D-money, why don't you push down on the trailing arm while I pull out the spri . . . . . Uhhh, forget it."

Basically the perch that centers the spring and keeps the spring on the car was completely rusted to no return. When I pulled out the spring the perch just came with it. We had to cut some pipe, and then weld it to what metal was left. A good 10mm build up from the pipe to the nearest piece of metal. It's solid now though.

interior is lookin good man!

Yeah I'm having trouble getting the rear to tuck, and I might do the front, I'm gunna see how I like the rear tucked.

Plan on doing brakes and jacking with the rear bumper shocks some more.

Also got some e36 window switches and a soldering gun to do a retro fit soon.

Still waiting on other parts though

My front gave me a lot of trouble, I had to take off the shocks and hammer them till they started to budge, then I put the bumper back on and then ran it into a wall. On the front I litterally had to stop a foot away and rollinto the wall to bump it in. Sometimes they seem to seize up.

Well the chrome was very faded and it have quite a few scratches so it didn't look very good. I took some self etching primer, then some filler primer, sanded it down and then took black bumper paint and sprayed it.

I actually will probably replace the lower valance bc its bent to hell around the bottom, but yeah it needs something done.

Thanks on the interior, I actually have been looking at black door panels.

I don't have a scanner, next time we are all together I can pull it apart real quick and you can trace the size or something.

Yeah I know, it originally was bent to fit in the grill on an integra... but now on the e30 if I unbend it it looks like crap so I just left it. Once I get new plates it will be left alone lol
