I'm your size and when I am out of shape, all I have to do is flex for a picture and look like I've been hitting the gym hardcore but if you see my relax, it's a different ball game.

good progress!

To compare further, the shirt in the first pic is the same size as the shirt in the second pic...lol...when i flex its not too much different then when i'm just lounging around...but i get what you are saying...

these are from several months ago(early december IIRC)
. Tanner, bigger, ~roughly same leaneness. Little leaner I think.

Might try to get some updated pics this week.

nothing actually...:lol2:

Its mainly diet to be honest (THANKS TO THE GODLIKE KNOWLEDGE THAT SYLVA BESTOWED UPON ME)...i take the basics though as far as supps, good whey protein, a creatine, and an NO supp for workout intensity...thats it...

It was easy for me to put on the first 15....after that it's been getting really hard to put the weight on...i'm struggling to break 180...

You're not at a point where you really need to worry about what "lacks" and what doesn't. You just need to go in and lift, legs included.

When you can tell you workout when you wear clothes, then you can start to worry about wahts "lacking"

Both.... I try to only use straps when I'm liftin *really* heavy...

All of my warm up sets are bare-handed, and I try to use them as little as possible. However when doing 315 or above, my fingers just cant fricken hold it. I even have been using grippers....

I've gotten to the point though where my skin tears off just below the base of my fingers on my palm side, before I lose grip. That hurts.

But, I definitely use a belt. :)

try some different grip exercises like static holds (holding say 100lb dumbbells as long as you can until you drop them) or farmers walk, that kind of stuff will really help your grip.

sitting about 235 right now probably gonna lose 10-15lbs tops by my first fight in a couple weeks. i am a lot 'chunkier' than i have been in a while but i feel great in the ring so i dont really give a shit. after this fight i might go ahead and bulk up to 250 or so. not really sure which weight i want to fight it consistently yet

I unfortunately don't have any good before pics. But 4 months ago I was 208 and hadn't lifted or worked out ever. I'm sure I had something like 23% BF.

Before-not the best representation. I was probably even a bit heavier than I am in this photo when I first started 4 months ago.

im gonna hit up the gym on base tonight, doubt anyones up, but what kinda supplements should i start takin?

Before you start taking supplements, you need to get your nutrition in check. Supplements supplement your diet, so you can't rely on them alone.

Also, get a good lifting routine and stick with it.

Figure out your goals. Are you a skinny person already, or are you wanting to lost weight? Figure out your basal metabolic rate and your daily energy expenditure. Eat 500 above that combined total to gain weight ie build muscle, or eat 500 below your maintenance to lose weight.

When I first started lifting, I took protein, got a pre-workout nitric oxide/caffeine supplement like NO Xplode, Superpump 250, or White Flood (WF doesn't have creatine in it), and I started taking creatine about a month after getting into lifting.

Stay at it. It might be discouraging not to see results right away, but after a while, you'll start to see the results.

I had my bf% taken today. I'm at 192lbs and 11% body fat. How realistic is it to cut another 2% in a month? I've got my macros more or less in check and am on a cutting diet taking Universal animal Cuts thermogenic. I took some photos (posted above) when I started it ~ 5 days ago, and I'll post up the results when the 3 week cycle is completed.

when you are as low as you are, you can lose the 2% but you will almost definitely lose some muscle in the process. at 11% bodyfat, even dropping 1% will make a noticable difference. if you are going for looks i wouldnt even worry about your bf% though

I have been busting my tail to get where I am at today. Would like to put on about 10 more lbs then start cutting down and bulk again next year around the same time. Ideally I would like to weigh 205-210 with lean muscle. It will be probably 2 more years of hardwork to get there, but man I have noticed how much easier it is to do things at work and in the garage with the added muscle. I don't try to workout too hard or I will lose motivation and results. This thread has been some good motivation. You all have some outstanding results. Keep up the hard work.

Yup. Lol. When you work around jet fuel all day, your hands tend to get pretty beat up. My skin literally gets raw. So, I wear a pair of old motocross gloves from back in the day. Lol. I can workout just fine without them, provided I have a few days off of work. My skin literally hurts on the insides of my fingers, and right where youform calluses at the base of each finger.

It sucks. I'll use straps on back day when goin real heavy, but I try to use as little "aids" as possible when doing my sets.

What equipment do you use??

Can't believe I'm doing this, but what the hell.

I've been working out for the past year and I feel as good as I did when I was in high school. I work out about 35-45 minutes a day, about 3 times a week. I also changed my eating habits, specifically no more going out to lunch.

The body image and goal I have in my head is Brad Pitt from Fight Club. Yes, I no Brad Pitt :D, but I want a lean and defined body. Gaining and maintaining mass is not what I want. I don't care about how much I can bench or curl. It's not important to me. I just want to be lean, fit, and healthy. I'm 35, 6' 1", and weigh about 175lbs. Last August when I started, I was at around 185-190lbs. I'm so happy to get my abs back.

Took about half a year to gain everything I lost from a back injury. Here is pic took a month or so ago.

160 lbs 9% BF unflexed.. Planning to bulk in winter. Use to weight 205 17% BF ( way to huge.. didn't like it ). Hope to get to 175 clean weight in a year or so around the same BF. Set my goals high :)

Last thing I maxed was bench at 315 twice.

Recently messed up my rotator cuff and have been out of the gym for almost 2 weeks now. First time I have injured my RC so I am waiting for it to heal up. Still have a little bit of pain when I raise my arm fully. Hopefully it heals in a week or so. If anyone has any input on recovery PM me.

thanks to swine flu and an awesome class/work schedule, i havn't been able to hit the gym the last two weeks, lost about ten pounds. im sure it was all water/fat because i still feel decently big but look more cut. hopefully i didn't lose much strength, i'd hate to drop back a lot and have to re-do everything.

On my way to the gym right now.

Weighing in right at 202lbs.

I seem to be pretty plateaud at this weight. I'd like to get to about 225, then cut the fat. We'll see what happens.

I just got over a crazy ass cold/flu variant that's going around like wildfire up here, and lost damn near 10lbs in a week and a half. My strength is the same, but I leaned out a little bit. Not that "full" look.

This weekend = EAT EAT EAT to get it all back.

Cardio helps but isn't really a must. I am really low on my BF and I dont ever really do any cardio (maybe once a month). The most important thing is DIET. No matter how much cardio you do if your diet isn't good you wont see anything different. This also goes for weight lifting. A lot of people spend a lot of time in the gym, but dont have really good diets so they dont really see the gains they want. If you eat right and do your weight lifting workouts without to many breaks you will be golden. If your trying to lose weight faster cardio will help tho... I just don't do much carido because it can break muscle down.

Speaking from my experience in dropping mucho weight, I'd agree with the diet. The addition of cardio and the lifting both really helped as plateau busters...but diet was the key.

you don't need to really worry about breaking down muscle if your diet is right, and you don't run on the treadmill forever...heart rate is key...a fast walking pace is ideal for burning fat...my rate is 127 for fat burning...

Well, I've been following this forum for a while now, I just mostly stay quiet. For the last 9 months or so, I've been going to the gym 2-3 times a week, not much of a regimine, but I had a busy schedule and was pretty motivated to get my last partying before deployment out of the way on the weekends, where I didn't have gym access anyways. So I did army pt (normally weak, but decent cardio) and went to the gym during the week at Fort Riley a lot.

Well, I'm in Iraq now. I wish I had some great war stories for ya, but I don't. I do however have time to go to the gym every single day, and have been completely motivated to do so. We've been at war in this damn country for long enough that the dining facility (think dorm style) also has pretty decent healthy choices. So I'm eating healthy every day, and going to the gym every day, and cardio of course too. All running.

I have the shittiest internet in the world out here and it takes over 10 minutes to upload a single picture. So yeah..this is it.

Wish me luck. I currently weigh 182 lbs, I'm 5' 10.5".

I'd like to weigh 185 with a better body fat (don't know mine currently) and of course a lot more built up.

I'm not much for pics, actually I hate them, but I figured if I posted one up here for people to ridicule, it'd be even more motivation. I'm not really starting from scratch, but either way, we'll call this "day 1."

cseaman - I spy a tub of Body Fortress Whey Protein in the background. If you are currently taking this supplement I urge you to stop. The garbage binders, levels of toxic acesulfame potassium, soy content, and c monohydrate render that protein among the most counter productive stuff I've ever come across. You would seriously be better off with eggs, chicken, tuna, etc. for your protein sources.

Oh, and stand up straight! Good luck!

Yeah dude...I bought that yesterday here at the PX because it's all they had to hold me over until I can have my ON whey shipped here, I just don't have a good address yet for that stuff.

I used it today and it gave less than satisfactory results in the shitter...so don't worry, it's coming off the shelf. Getting this information from you just sealed the deal on that shit going into the trash.

There are lots of different studies out there that have show that those with reduced kidney function on high protein diets can have a significant decrease in the glomerular filtration rate. Studies thus far have shown that high protein diets seem to be fine with adults having normal kidney function, but it causes hyper filtration, in which the long term effects are not greatly known at this point.

Studies thus far have shown that high protein diets seem to be fine with adults having normal kidney function, but it causes hyper filtration, in which the long term effects are not greatly known at this point.

Alan is a continuing education provider for the Commission on Dietetic Registration, National Academy of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise, and National Strength & Conditioning Association. Alan recently lectured to clinicians at the FDA and the annual conference of the Los Angeles Dietetic Association.

Myth #1: "High protein intake is harmful to your kidneys."
The origin: Back in 1983, researchers first discovered that eating more protein (http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article.do?site=MensHealth&channel=nutrition&category=food.for.fitness&conitem=5cb12ff84237f010VgnVCM20000012281eac____) increases your "glomerular filtration rate," or GFR. Think of GFR as the amount of blood your kidneys are filtering per minute. From this finding, many scientists made the leap that a higher GFR places your kidneys under greater stress (http://www.menshealth.com/cda/topicpage.do?site=MensHealth&channel=health&category=stress.management).

What science really shows: Nearly 2 decades ago, Dutch researchers found that while a protein-rich meal did boost GFR, it didn't have an adverse effect on overall kidney function. In fact, there's zero published research showing that downing hefty amounts of protein--specifically, up to 1.27 grams per pound of body weight a day--damages healthy kidneys.

The bottom line: As a rule of thumb, shoot to eat your target body weight in grams of protein daily. For example, if you're a chubby 200 pounds and want to be a lean 180, then have 180 grams of protein a day. Likewise if you're a skinny 150 pounds but want to be a muscular 180.

I've been struggling as to whether I need to cut down first and then try to bulk up, or just bulk up in the first place. This stuff is confusing! Either way, I'm happier simply getting so much exercise and eating healthier alllllllllllllllllllllllllllll of the time.

And on the bulk...I'm still like 50/50. I'm eating really well, and well spaced out, and to be honest I'd be content at 185 (same weight as when I got here) if I was a shit load bigger. We'll see. I just want to look way different when I come back for R&R in March. Being really cut down would be nice too. I've never been skinny, nor particularly fat, but some abs would be pretty ballin haha.

Not sure where yet. I have a feeling everything is shifting to afghan. I also ETS april 2011 so I dont know how that will work. I thinking about switching branches. Anyways..

Keep up the progress. I might hit 185 by end of year, but Im thinking 180 is more realistic.

~ If you think you have enough experience to train someone else you should look the part. Having a certification means jack shit. It's a piece of paper that says "Congratulations! You were able to read a book and look up answers to a test." Practice what you preach!

I didnt think you would be the one bashing/negativity. I have respect towards you and hope that you would show the same. 1. I have never made any crazy claims. I am just certified and have not been trying to pimp my business on here, so why the hate? 2. I am a work in progress much like the most in here and will continue to progress. 3. And the test is not open book like you are trying to assume.
Experience and muscle does not come overnight.
I am always open to suggestions and criticism.

Kind of an ignorant statement. Maybe if you read the material, you would understand why some trainers are very lean. Ectomorphs don't genetically 'blow up' like some other gifted individuals. Lack of commitment and genetics are two different things. Try eating 300g's of protein, and 5,000 calories a day to MAINTAIN a weight of 160 lbs. My g/f's metabolism is the same way. She burns up anything she eats before even lifting a finger.

I love meatheads that think they're the shit because of genetics. Doesn't mean you're in as great of shape as you think. One of the 'leaner' trainers at the gym can triple what all the 'built' trainers lift, and could run a marathon after. The guy is a machine. I'd single handedly hire him as a trainer, than some jackass that thinks they look good. Don't judge a book by it's cover.

for your sake i hope that wasn't directed at Sylva, because that would be a big misconception. And there's a difference between lean and skinny fat.

And if you are eating 300g's of pro, and 5k to maintain 160lbs, you're doing something wrong. Just sayin.

I wouldn't take weightloss tips from somebody obviously overweight, or weight training tips from somebody that doesn't look like they lift a finger. So i see where Sylva is coming from.

No pics because I took a few but you couldn't really see well in them because my camera blows. I'm about to the size I was freshman year of high school (I'm only 5' tall and was pretty much full grown by like 7th grade so its not weird that I would be as small as I was in high school again) but have reached a pretty shitty dilemma. If I lose the last 2-3lbs I want to I will almost certainly also lose my boobs. Now I have to decide if I want a completely flat stomach or boobs more. Shitty.

Yeah, okay brah.

I get the point of overweight trainers being out of place, but give me a gym where every trainer 'looks' the part.

I wouldn't know, I don't go there.

I'm not saying what Sylva has to say has no truth, it is just a stupid statement that it doesn't apply to everyone.

When I went to the 24 Hour off SM Pkwy everyone in there was on juice. I was probably one of the only regular sized people going there.

Have you guys seen this new lift where you take a barbell bar and just drop it on the floor after doing 2 curls with it in the middle of the free weight room? It's my fav.

Your form is fucked up. You're supposed to make a slightly relieved grunting sound (not unlike the sound you make when you pass a huge poo) as you drop the weight, then inflate your FUCKING HUGE invisible lats and go stand by the water fountain and stare at your workout area for 4-6 minutes. What did you do yesterday, chest and biceps? Well, it's chest and bicep day again, now get back to the gym and do it right.

Anyways....this has gotten off topic.

I am down with constructive criticism if that can be provided.

I understand the "look the part" thing to an extent. But, I feel that I have been on the right track now for the past several months towards looking the part and practicing what I preach. I have several more months ahead of me just to get the weight up and I am on a steady pace. If want to be supportive then thanks, if you want to be negative then I can work with that 2. Either way I will continue towards my goals.

Maybe we need to see some before pics to understand where your started from then.

Surely you can see where your expertise and commitment come into question when you post those pics.

I still have a long way to go but since quiting my "day job" to run my business full time I try to get to the gym at least 5 days out of the week. I've been doing pretty good. Just got back actually.

I started doing mainly cardio to get rid of some of the pudge I had forming in my mid section. It's not gone completely but it's smaller for sure.

That was about two months ago. About a month in I started doing some light lifting and have slowly worked my way up. Still not much to show but I can feel a difference in just this two months of taking it easy. Here in the next few weeks I plan to step it up a notch.

Perhaps when the progress pics show some real progress I can post up the before I took my first morning going to the gym and then post some after.
