View Full Version : KCSR Benchmark Hall of Fame (3dmark06, Vantage)
Scooby24
2009-03-02, 03:16 PM
Welcome to KCSR's second PC Benchmark Hall of Fame!
In keeping up with the times, we've cut all benchmarks except 3DMark06 and added Vantage.
3DMark06 can be obtained with a free license for the basic version here:
http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/3dmark06/download/
Vantage can be purchased for 6.95 here (requires Vista):
http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/3dmarkvantage/buyit/
For 3DMark06, post your overall score and for Vantage post your P-Score (Screenshots). Note that all benchmark standards for the basic version are on a resolution of 1280x1024. If you have a 19" monitor or smaller and are unable to achieve these resolutions, please include that information as your score will be artificially inflated.
While you can simply overclock and be stable enough just for the benchmark, it is generally recommended you find your prime95 or equivalent stability test proven settings prior to posting the benchmark score.
In addition to posting your scores, please feel free to list the following info about your system:
* cpu model / stock speed / benchmark speed (ex. Intel Q6600 Quad / 2600mhz / 3301 mhz)
* FSB (ex. 333)
* motherboard make/model (ex. Asus P5k Deluxe)
* GPU (ex. ATI 2900XT)
* memory (ex. Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 w/ CL 5-5-5-12)
* other notes: OS, hard drives, type of cooling, etc
For 3DMark06, XP will result in a higher score than Vista so as you post your score, it will be noted whether it was obtained through XP (XP) or Vista (V). NOTE: Windows 7 RC now available and marked with (7)

My vantage score is not like your guys, since I still have the same old cards.
I also do not have screen shots, I did it a while ago. Here is a link to my vantage score saved in the profile.

I did the pencil mod and my voltages are all off whack. I used to have 1.587v in bios to be stable at 3.85 but with vdroop, it was usually right at 1.5. I just threw bios to 1.55 this time around as I knew it would be enough but it was a bit too much. Temps were approaching 70 so it's my voltage limit on air cooling. Should note that it's prime95 stable now at 3.8 with 1.45 vcore.

Yes, speed stepping is enabled. I've heard disabling it causes OC's to become unstable. I tried to P95 it with it enabled and it still won't go 100% on all cores. Basically its 3.0ghz until turbo comes on then its 3150

I don't see any reason why an i7 would be any different than any other of Intel's CPU's. Speed stepping causes OC's to be unstable. Disabling it is what gives you stability. Turbo mode is simply cranking up your multiplier and disabling it will give you the ability to adjust voltages for stability at 100% load at all times with no chance of fluctuation.

exactly...if anything it will make your overclocks more stable. I have not seen one thing on ocforums or overclock.net stating it causes it to be not stable.

dude its the other way around.....ENABLING speedstep may cause unstable OCs because the bclk and the voltage will be fluctuatiing at all times depending on load whereas if u have it disabled u have exactly the OC setting u want at all times

:wstupid: your volts are going to be bouncing low high low high with the cpu speed which causes your overclock to bomb out...

My monitor is a 22" so the native res is 1680x1050. The benches were done on default resolution/settings and obviously i had the feature testing turned off for vantage.
Yeah I had an Athlon64 X2 5000+ forever and after seeing the rave over i7 i finally jumped ship and upgraded and I could not be happier....the new i7 920 just r@pes anything ive ever seen and if I had more money/time to build a water cooling setup I'm sure the i7 920 can go even higher, 1.4v is about as high as i want to push it on air cooling (noctua nh-12up)
@joe,
don't think SLI should affect GPU OC. I had a single 260 for a while and then when i got the second one the stability point were pretty much the same. and if you have the evga precision tool it should OC both cards equally. oh and the 260 OCs like there's no tomorrow!

My older card is one of the earlier core 216 models, orange and black with a backplate. With the 128.08 drivers I can overclock it to 720/1550/1220 without any artifacting or freezing up in any benchmarks or tests. With the fan on 100% it would get into the mid 50's.
On the newer card, I got the core 216 model that is red and black with NO backplate. GPU-Z says it's still a 65nm card, but I don't know. I haven't tried running it by itself yet, but in SLI I can only get it up to 715/1500/1180. This card is always at least 10 degrees warmer than my older card too. During Vantage with 100% fan speed it gets up to the low 70's, while my older card with higher clocks only reached the mid 50's. Idle temperature is 42 on my old card (GPU 1) and 55 on my new card (GPU 2), fan at 47%, clocks are synced at 685/1477/1175 on both cards.
Now when I run my benchmark tests, I sync both cards, so I run them both at the most stable clock speed, which is that of the newer card. The newer card is still always hotter, at least by 10 degrees.
I ran some Vantage tests today with my 24/7 clock speeds, 3.4GHz on the CPU, and 685/1477/1175 synced on both GPU's, to watch the temperatures with the 'AUTO' fan speed control. As I didn't care about the scores, I watched on my second monitor as the tests ran. To my disappointment, the newer card (GPU 2) hit 82 degrees and the highest the fan speed reached was 51%. The older card (GPU 1) hit like 69 degrees, and the auto fan speed never moved from 40%
This is my first ever SLI set-up, I really don't know if these numbers look normal or not, but any advise would be greatly appreciated. I've found that the 128.08 drivers are working the best for me so far.
Here are the two cards I have, older on the left, newer on the right.

Here they are in my dusty case, newer on the bottom, older on top.

Just did one vantage run with everyday settings @3.2ghz. Its been a while since I have overclocked this thing I need to remember what I had it set at. I need to catch up with the rest of you.

I updated you. If your power supply is what's holding back your graphics as I suspect, you will probably see a small increase, though anything past 15k in 3dmark06 starts to get more into the CPU score.
To put in in perspective, my score with the GTX 295 on 3.0ghz on the q6600 is 16170. I could add a second 295 and it probably wouldn't be much better. 3dmark06 is far too CPU driven and isn't a very good indicator passed 15k as to whether or not your machine is going to see a difference in gaming. Vantage, on the other hand, is a very real indicator of the machine's gaming ability.

In vantage you won't see much of an increase unless your CPU is a bottleneck for your video card. Unlike 3dmark06, at 600mhz overclock shows only a minor increase in score.

The q6600 is only a mild performer at stock speeds and my dual 8800gts's were also 12k on stock settings. At stock speeds, the q6600 is a bottleneck.
Another reason why we're telling you all to ditch 3dmark06. CPU dependent, not gaming realistic. If they were to run vantage with a q6600 at stock speeds, you'd see scores more in line with the computer's gaming abilities.
Going off the current scores, you might think his rig would be worse at gaming than an i7 with only one 260 scoring around 18k but you'd be mistaken.

3.0 is usually easy as pie. Keep multiplier at 9. Set FSB to 1333 and set the CPU voltage to manual and run the VID listed in CoreTemp.
Example: In coretemp, my VID is listed at 1.2250 V. Set CPU voltage to 1.2250, FSB to 1333 and be done.
I had rock solid 24/7 stability and my scores bumped up very nicely. I run it daily and rarely overclock more than that anymore.

first, did you run a stability check?? if not lets check that first just to be safe...run one of the 2 for a few hours to make sure your overclock is stable or your going to have a headache in the long run trying to find the right settings...
When/ if it starts to error out you will know really quick if its stable or not.
run either Orthos Prime
http://www.overclock.net/downloads/138142-orthos.html
or Prime95
http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103
and use a temp monitoring system to make sure the cpu isnt overheating to the point where it will hurt itself..
Coretemp
http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
or Realtemp
http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/
try these settings for 3.6..... Voltage 1.35~1.4, FSB 1600, Bus 400 x9 (9 is multiplier)

I may have to dust off the ol' OC settings and re-run this. My original score, was done on a horrible OC (3.4/800) when I can manage 3.85 and 1066+.. Should be able to get in the 23-24k range hopefully. Im still not ready to dump the 6600 in lieu of a 920 even though they are 199 @ Microcenter.

Thanks, I still need a better cooler but got to wait till end of month cause bills are due. The Vendetta 2 works well at that vCore.......if I have my 3000 Ultra Kaza on it. Not really my idea of a quite pc even when slowed down. Wanting to get a ifx-14 or that similar looking Noctua that was shown back at the beginning of June (forget the name of the show), but I've yet to see any news on when it will be released.

You aren't kidding. I got a bench stable 4.3ghz clock and reran with the same video settings, expecting to get over 27k and I only got to 26,889. The CPU bumps you good initially but then the excess has to be made up in video OC.
I need to voltmod the 295.
I just RMA'd it complaining of buzzing, and hoping to get a single PCB card for better cooling, but I don't think I'm going to get that lucky. The shipping label in the e-mail has the same part number as the dual PCB that I have so I guess they still have dual PCB's around for RMA's. I'll find out tomorrow when it shows up.

Same boat here. The 750 will get be by with water cooling as long as I don't get a ridiculous pump, but I definitely would have to get a new PSU or have a dedicated PSU for video with another 295.
I've heard people are getting by fine on dual 295's with a dedicated 650 watter which can be had for around a hundred bucks. But then you have to deal with a second PSU in the case...or externally which is just plain nasty.

That's as high as I can get my shaders while remaining linked. I can bump up my clock speed a little bit more if I unlink it from the shader. I also had to drop my memory clock down from 1200, which is where I originally started. I've tried the Voltage Tuner, but it had no effect on my cards.

3DMark Vantage or 3DMark06? '06 isn't written for multi-core use.
here's my answer.
yeah, when I watch Core Temp - it is only utilizing 2 cores.

Looks like I read it wrong - it's using all cores.
I guess 13k seems to be pretty high for this motherboard.

What do you mean for this motherboard?
Your motherboard has very little impact on any scores unless the motherboard is preventing you from overclocking to a higher potential that better boards have.
The majority of the score is going to depend on 6 things.
1) your CPU
2) your CPU Overclock
3) your GPU
4) your GPU Overclock
5) your Memory
6) your Memory Overclock
Your motherboard is just the path to interconnect all of them and push them to their potentials.

I guess I really just don't know a whole lot about overclocking.
When I attempt to use the "preset" overclocks at 15% - my cpu voltage won't stabilize and it crashes.
When I go manual - and set my CPU bus to 366, that is just about as high as I can go to keep the system stable without blue screening me on boot.
I wish there was a site to say...with this chip and this board...use these settings.
Here is my benchmark...might as well add me to the Hall of Fame. (FYI - I benchmarked at 1762 last week. This damn program made me spend money and upgrade.)

CPU-Z shows my idle speeds and such. It clocks at 3111 mhz.

There's a lot to learn when it comes to overclocking, and there's no real universally stable setting for your motherboard and CPU combo because there are variances in the hardware that require your own unique settings.
If I remember right, you have a 680i board right? If so, here's an overclocking guide for it: http://www.nvidia.com/docs/CP/45121/nforce_680i_sli_overclocking.pdf
edit - nvm you have a p5kpl-cm. I don't know much about that board but you should definitely be able to get a higher clock with your hardware. I got an e5300 to 3.46ghz without even changing voltages with the g31 chipset.

Rrunning a quad on a P35 board going to limit on how far he can push it. Mostly depending on how comfortable he is with voltages. Though, I would think that if the ram is good enough, 400 bus wouldn't be too much of a problem.

Just keep going and post your final score, rather than me update the list 10 times. :lol2:

My new rig. No overclocking. I am not very computer savvy, a buddy gave me a parts list to order and built it for me.
