View Full Version : John Cusack Will Be Edgar Allan Poe in James McTeigue’s ‘The Raven’

Wachowski siblings protege and V For Vendetta director James McTeigue has been planning to direct The Raven for the past year, and at one point had Jeremy Renner and [URL="http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/08/27/john-cusack-will-be-edgar-allen-poe-in-james-mcteigues-the-raven/#"]Ewan McGregorhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.slashfilm.com/author/russ-fischer/) both in talks (http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/02/17/jeremy-renner-and-ewan-mcgreggor-in-talks-james-mcteigues-raven-renner-might-also-star-in-peter-bergs-battleship/) for roles (perhaps the same role?) in the film. We don’t know what happened with Mcgregor, while Renner is obviously going to be quite busy, between The Avengers, Mission: Impossible 4 (we’ll keep using that title for now) and possibly Paul Thomas Anderson’s project The Master.
But John Cusack has some free time, and today the actor said he’s confirmed to play Edgar Allan Poe in the film by McTeigue.
The info comes from a tweet (http://twitter.com/johncusack/status/22249509012) by Cusack, which said “officiali- will play edgar allan poe in fall-a-film called the raven, send any poe- gold - my way as i begin this journey into the abyss.”
Clarifications: keep in mind that this is totally separate from the Poe film that Sylvester Stallonehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/08/27/john-cusack-will-be-edgar-allen-poe-in-james-mcteigues-the-raven/#) has long wanted to do. It is also totally separate from the feature version of the recent short film The Raven, which Universal is developing (http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/07/16/sci-fi-short-the-raven-lands-at-universal-feature-version-may-star-mark-wahlberg/).
From previous reports, here’s what we know about The Raven:
The Raven is a fictionalized account of the final five “mysterious” days of Edgar Allan Poe’s life. Apparently the famous writer joins the hunt for a serial killer whose murders are inspired by his stories.
McTeigue describes it “like the poem, The Raven, itself, crossed with Se7en.”
The screenplay is written by Hannah Shakespeare (who wrote the 2005 drama Loverboy, and was a story editor on Bionic Woman and Ghost Whisperer) and Ben Livingston.
Machinist/Session 9 director Brad Anderson had been previously developing the project.
The real death of Poe was also mysterious. The writer was discovered on the streets of Baltimore in great distress and in need of “immediate assistance.” He was wearing someone else’s clothes and repeating the name “Reynolds”. He died shortly after in hospital, never able to explain what had happened.

Nevermore will you say you haven’t seen what John Cusack looks like as legendary master of horror, Edgar Allen Poe (http://www.slashfilm.com/paranormal-activity-director-oren-peli-direct-edgar-allen-poes-eliza-graves/). The High Fidelity actor is currently in Budapest shooting The Raven (http://www.slashfilm.com/tag/the-raven/) with director James McTeigue, who directed V for Vendetta. In the film, Poe goes on a search for a murderer who is mimicking crimes from his works. Check out the full body (http://www.slashfilm.com/john-cusack-edgar-allen-poe-the-raven/#) shot and more info about the film after the jump.
Here’s the photo. Thanks to Gawker (http://gawker.com/5689944/john-still-couldnt-figure-out-why-the-better-off-dead-prequel-was-set-in-1835) for the heads up.
http://bitcast-a-sm.bitgravity.com/slashfilm/wp/wp-content/images/CusackRaven.jpg (http://bitcast-a-sm.bitgravity.com/slashfilm/wp/wp-content/images/CusackRaven.jpg) The film also stars Alice Eve and Lucas Evans, reportedly as Poe’s finance and another detective We’ve written about The Raven (http://www.slashfilm.com/tag/the-raven/) before – when McTeigue came aboard (http://www.slashfilm.com/james-mcteigue-reveals-next-project-the-raven-updates-altered-carbon/) as well as when Cusack was cast (http://www.slashfilm.com/john-cusack-will-be-edgar-allen-poe-in-james-mcteigues-the-raven/). Plus, we heard rumors that Jeremy Renner (http://www.slashfilm.com/john-cusack-edgar-allen-poe-the-raven/#) and Ewan McGregor were also up for the role (http://www.slashfilm.com/jeremy-renner-and-ewan-mcgreggor-in-talks-james-mcteigues-raven-renner-might-also-star-in-peter-bergs-battleship/). In addition to that, here’s a wrap up Russ did of all the info we have on the project.

What do you think of the look of Cusack here? Seems pretty spot on to me. And I can’t be the only one looking forward to the actor taking on a more dramatic role as opposed to his recent ones in big budget (http://www.slashfilm.com/john-cusack-edgar-allen-poe-the-raven/#) blockbusters and quirky comedies, right?

Thats gonna be awesome.
Relativity Media released the first look image of actor John Cusack as the poet Edgar Allen Poe in the upcoming thriller “The Raven.”
The film also stars Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Jackson-Cohen.
Here is the official synopsis of the film:
In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allen Poe (John Cusack) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders.
When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.
Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.
The film is directed by James McTeigue (“Ninja Assassin,” “V for Vendetta”). The screenplay is written by Ben Livingston (“Unrest,” “Bruce Almighty”) and Hannah Shakespeare (“Loverboy”).
The film is scheduled for release in theaters on March 9th next year.
