i have never had a freshwater tank, I was always worried about the smell
always wanted to start a nice planted freshwater tank though as I have tons of extra halide fixtures and some extra bottles of CO2 from my old calcium reactor setup

you dont need a ton of room for a saltwater tank,
chrome has a 29gal 1.5ftx1.5ft footprint that looks pretty sweet

I have a lot of live plants and drift wood which keeps the smell down, that and doing 10% water changes every week, I have my cory catfish and algae eaters so the tank it always clean.

mine sits inside my stand, and a little tip when going with a saltwater system DO NOT TAKE SHORTCUTS. and dont skimp on $$ when buying equipment either. Anything made by TUNZE is expensive but top choice !

I looked into getting into fish, too damn expensive. I'd rather build a drag bike and lose my ass on that dead end investment. I feel like i'd find a way to kill all my expensive rocks, fish and plants and shit. That's beautiful though. I go to petworld etc while i'm on call and chck out their stuff. I love having a job that requires me to be on call and 10 minz away haha.

I've had quite a few African Cichlid tanks, love them to death.
I was considering going saltwater here recently but changed my mind. Instead I'm going to setup another brackish tank with green spotted puffers. They seem to like more salinity when they get bigger so perhaps I'll end up with a full salt tank in the end.

Brackish tanks are great, such a wide variety of fish you can put in them. There is even a species of brackish ray you can keep.

i have no clue what a brackish tank is ??? and how much maintenance do you do on your salt water tank a week you'd say? and how much does it cost to go from my fresh water tank to convert it to a salt water tank?

Brackish is a salt/freshwater tank, some salinity but not saltwater. There are a ton of different species that live in brackish waters.

Read more. As it sits, you have a tank that will only have a couple of cichlids in it in the next month or so.

Cichlids aren't exactly community fish, and depending on whether or not the orange fish are also a type of cichlid (I'm thinking they might be parrot cichlid), the cichlids may not get along either.
Malawi, Victoria, and Tanganyika cichlids (lakes in Africa from which your fish came), may not all get along with each other.

all I do is add a few drops of iodine to the tank once or twice a week, along with some frozen zoo plankton. I test calcium, alkalinity and magnesium every sunday and adjust my dosing system accordingly. I refill my Auto water leveling system once a month with a mixture of calcium and magnesium hydroxides and Lab grade water i make in my basement from a RO/DI unit, I have to replace the bulbs (400W radium halides) once every 6 months cause I over drive them with a M80 pulse start ballast to produce more PAR/ growth.
I do have to get in there with bone crushers every time to time to keep the corals from growing into eachother and to scrape some coralline algae from the glass.;
Its a fun hobby and can be profitable, also you may find that your friends may have a little trouble pulling themselves away from it after some good weed.
Pasty I bet I hook you up with everything you would need to get started, minus the lights.

your going to have to drill your tank if you want a nice reef ( $40)
then about 90 for a main pump
250 for a skimmer
60 on a "good" heater
50 on salt
40 on sand
150 on a "starter amount of live rock"
you cannot use un -purified water in a reef tank, you can buy drops to make the water safe for fish only, but If you want a reef tank you need lab grade water = 000 PPM ( parts per million of dissolved solids ) so an RO/DI unit is needed $250-300
then there is Lighting
again for a nice reef plan on spending 500
then another 100 on supplements / random crap
then add a hefty coral/ critter budget
So
About $2000 would convert your 55gallon into a nice looking reef tank
there have been quotes made that total over $100,000 for home aquariums,
people have laptops running their tanks on the web/ from their cell phones, its pretty incredible.
here is an international reef keeping forum
ReefCentral.com lots of cool techy builds
its a scary expensive, addicting hobby !!! STAY AWAY !!!!

I'll post pics of my new 75 setup as soon as I get it up and going. My current 75 went to shit somehow(broke out in flatworms, all my zoa's started dying, even one of my anemones is closing up, but my SPS and xenia's are doing great )
xXSTi-lynXx
2010-11-18, 08:10 PM
FW are a bitch !!!! they really didnt do anything to my SPS, but they are ugly and were killing some $$$ zoas
get some salifert FW exit- do a 1/2 dose at a time and double the amount of carbon the instructions say. the reason for the 1/2 dose is to kill only a portion of the critters at a time as its the FW that have the toxins not the medication for them
also make sure you have a oversized skimmer rated for 3x your system volume- do you have the common xenia enlongata ??? or the rare red sea (pom pom) xenia ???
I would take it out during the treatment -it can crash quick and xenia is vey toxic
also studies have been shown that it releases compounds (like other softies) that slow the calcification process of sps/lps corals

No, it's still running, everything is doing better. I moved all my zoa's to my friends quarantine tank and he did a freshwater dip on them, said they're doing somewhat better than they were in my tank. I'm just keeping my fish/SPS in this current tank until I get the other one cycled.

whats the weekly maintenance on a salt tank a week?
chrome
2011-01-03, 05:11 PM
It all really depends on how big, what equipment you have and what you are keeping in it. My 6 foot tank took me messin with it every couple days but the 28 gallon JBJ Nano tank i have now is little to no maintence. I clean the glass with a magnet every few days (takes 30 seconds) and i pour about 3 gallons of new water in every 2 weeks for what has evaporated......Thats lkitterally it other than what you feed your fish really.

Unless you plan on dumping $1000 in badass corals right off the bat you dont have to have crazy exspensive equipment or even have to dose ANYTHING. You can do a straight FISH ONLY tank with just live rock in it for cheeeep. And that is a great way to get the hang of it anyways. Get a big maroon clown, puffer fish, lionfish and a big wrasse and feel like a pimp. All you need is the tank, hang-on bio-wheel filter, crappy hang on skimmer, heater, small powerhead, sand and rock.....DONE Under $500

Do any of you have experience with Green Spotted Puffers? I've had figure 8 puffers in a brackish tank before with good success. My question is about GSP's thouogh. I know they tend to strive in high gravity brackish waters but can adapt and do very well in full marine. What are your thoughts on it? I'm asking because I'm getting ready to start a new tank and am still on the wall about going saltwater vs brackish.

thats coral and live rock. Looks like he has 2 250 watt metal halide pendants with 14k or 20k bulbs
I was running 2x 250x radium 20k halides in a few of the pics
but I swapped out ballasts/bulbs to run 2x 400w radium 20k.
It is live rock and SPS coral
Chrome: Im too full as it is, I got shit growing into eachother left and right, also all I read was blah blah blah.
i dont care what you call it, its acropora tenius, acropora latistella, acropora lovelii etc etc
call it by any fancy nickname you want, to me it is genus and species.
I dont play the "nickname" game with coral........I only do that with pot.

LOL! a properly set up a larger tank should require less care (minus feeding) than a smaller one, come on brandon get with the program.

Chrome, your tank looks kickass also.

Mangroves are Badass !, but to be effective at up-taking nutrients they need more intense light than a screw in PC lamp. they look so neat in sumps though, so who cares if they aren't very functional
I had some impressive ones growing in the overflow boxes of the reef tanks at the shop chrome works at when I managed it. Then the owner sold them once customers started asking about them.
I noted to achieve the classic sprawled out mangrove look to the roots, you need to attach the pod to a plastic rod and move it up to keep only 1/2 the roots out of water.
Here are some pics of the tanks at the shop when I managed it;

I have been keeping reefs for about 13 years, I have been obessed about SPS for the last 8 of those years. I can identify every genus by its latin name, in addition I can Identify some of the 500+ species of acropora, and most of all the species of montipora by their latin name among other species of certain genus' of SPS coral.
I run a aquarium service company and I love it, building reefs with other peoples money and getting paid for it!
I just love the idea that a reef tank is its own little eco-system, and its fun trying to replicate every aspect of our ocean.
Did I mention reef aquariums are panty droppers????? (for you straights)

little tip on the tubastrea sp ( orange coral between the goinopora in the last pic)
because this is an a-photosynthetic coral (no zooanxthelle/ does'nt use light)
it requires alot of feeding , which is hard to get it to do , as the feeder tenticals are usually withdrawn.
a good trick is to place it in a bucket of old aquarium water when performing a water change. thaw out some brine/mysis shrimp , add the juices to the bucket to provoke the feeding response (tenticals open) and with a turkey baster lightly feed each polyp.
then place coral back in the system. This way the whole aquarium is not polluted and the coral is well fed.
deftec
2011-01-24, 09:09 PM
Yeah. I'm almost positive it died off in the move before hand. I haven't seen them open or out in about 2 months. It ended up getting moved to the sump lol
xXSTi-lynXx
2011-01-24, 09:22 PM
Another thing is they require mass amounts of flow, even laminar flow is alright and needed for the entire genus of tubastrea.
If you still see orange tissue in the centers of the corallites then its still able to come back.
But considering the labor involved in keeping it well fed and its probability of not exactly thriving in a nutrient poor contemporary reef system- Its a $35 coral= not worth it

what do you run in the magnum? if your using the micro filter then clean or change it ever 48-72 hours or it will become an N03 factory.
if anyone wants some SPS frags I have some green montipora digitata and pink pollicipora i could get rid of. Both colonies where the only that survived my tank crash that happend about 9mo ago due to Kalkwasser overdose when my timer running a dosing pump failed so they are basically kill proof.
also need to snap a few branches off my green/ blue tipped acropora tenuis.
ill sell the frags for 5-10$

Alright, I am looking to start up my 20 gallon freshwater tank again for my fiance. I have a Marineland Penguin BIO-Wheel 200 filter and was wondering if I would be able to keep 2 Oranda Goldfish in it. I know a common rule for fancy goldfish is at least 20 gallons for the first and 10+ gallons for the 2nd, just checking to see if that was the consensus here. I believe that is due to them being a large bodied fish thus creating more waste. The filter does 200 GPH and I will do 20% water changes every week. Just wondering if that is possible.
If it isn't I will just go and get my fiance a 37 gallon tank/stand that is on sale right now and put 2 Orandas in there. If that is the route I have to go, which I am assuming it is...What would I be able to put in my 20 gallon. I know I personally like schooling fish so I know there are a lot of decent options for a 20 gallon tank but was wondering what others would suggest.
Spoolin4Door
2012-01-15, 09:14 AM
I'd suggest putting the goldfish in the 37. They have a pretty big bioload and the extra water volume will keep them healthier.
You have a ton of options for 20 gallon tank. Is it a 20 long or a 20 high? If you like schooling fish there are tons of tetras you could put in there. I'd pick a group of tetras you like and then get 5 dwarf cory catfish. They stay small, cruise the bottom and love to school. Depending on how big of tetras you get and how many you could throw in a centerpiece fish like a Dwarf Gourami.
KCBear
2012-01-15, 06:54 PM
I think we are planning to get this:
6 Cardinal Tetra's
3 White Skirt Tetra's
3 Black Skirt Tetra's
2 Oto's
1 Dwarf Gourami
Spoolin4Door
2012-01-15, 07:58 PM
That would work. I've never had luck keeping oto's for a long time. They seem to be pretty fragile fish. I think part of the problem is that they aren't captive bred.
Instead of the ottos I think a school of 5 panda cory's would be a nice contrast with your white skirt tetras.
KCBear
2012-01-15, 08:21 PM
Yeah I had thought about that but wasn't sure. I will probably get the panda cory's. According to aquarium advisor my tank will be 95% full with that configuration and obviously still have plenty of filter space.

That stock is just fine, not much bioload in the fish you want in there.
The bioload of the goldfish would be too much for the 20. I'd say get the 37 and throw an Aquaclear AC70 on it and keep up with your water changes and you'll have happy goldfish.

I agree, goldfish are very dirty, they also like very alkaline water , which biological filtration decreases overtime from natrual acids released in the nitorgen cycle. anothjer thing is they are a cold water fish and must be kept without a heater.
