An Audi R8 can be yours for around $120,000, depending on which model you select and how options you laden it with, while the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will set you back closer to the $180,000-and-upwards mark.

BMW’s entrant in this segment, the production version of the Vision EfficientDynamics (http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1051230_official-new-model-based-on-bmw-vision-efficientdynamics-concept-coming-in-2013) eco supercar (http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1052602_report-200k-pricetag-expected-for-bmw-vision-efficientdynamics-supercar#) concept, will set you back even further, with prices reportedly reaching the $200,000 mark when the car arrives in October of 2013. That’s the estimate of BMW sales chief Ian Robertson, who spoke recently with Inside Line.

In fairness, the pricetag is relatively justified given the car’s multitude of technology, such as its carbon-fiber (http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1052602_report-200k-pricetag-expected-for-bmw-vision-efficientdynamics-supercar#) construction, plug-in hybrid performance and active aerodynamics. As Robertson explained it, the Vision EfficientDynamics will "redefine how we look at high-performance sports cars”.

Importantly, it will be cheaper than two of its most obvious rivals, the all-electric Audi r8 e-tron (http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1046375_video-mercedes-benz-sls-amg-e-cell-electric-prototype-previewed) and Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell (http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1047179_audi-r8-e-tron-wins-silvretta-ev-rally), both of which are expected to be priced at around $250,000 when they hit the market in late 2012.

While the Vision EfficientDynamics’s final specs are yet to be nailed, Robertson boasted that the car will be able to compete with Ferrari and Porsche in terms of performance.

The concept version (http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1034742_bmw-vision-efficientdynamics-concept-official-details) packed a three-cylinder turbodiesel with a hybrid (http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1052602_report-200k-pricetag-expected-for-bmw-vision-efficientdynamics-supercar#)synchronous motor at the front axle and a full-hybrid engine at the rear axle, which enables an overall system output of 328 horsepower. The end result is a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds with an average fuel economy of 62.5 mpg.

The arrangement of the hybrid powertrain allows the diesel engine to drive the rear wheels directly or with assistance from a rear-axle electric motor through a six-speed gearbox, while the electric motor up front drives the front wheels on pure electricity, and all three systems can work in tandem for maximum performance. This delivers a range of possibilities for in-town and performance driving.

Look out for a world debut of the Vision EfficientDynamics supercar at the 2012 Olympics in London, which BMW is sponsoring.

Report: BMW eco supercar to branded as i8

http://photos.leftlanenews.com/photos/content/october2010/thumbnailsnewcss/bmw-ved-concept-cr_434.png

By Mark Kleis BMW has officially given the green light to its Vision EfficientDynamics concept, but the eco-friendly supercar will bear a different name when it finally makes production.

According to the enthusiast sit BMW (http://www.leftlanenews.com/bmw.htm)Blog, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept will make production as the i8. The “i” designation makes sense as BMW has trademarked a number of “i” nameplates to launch as its greener sub-brand.
Using BMW’s current naming scheme, its easy to discern that the i8 will be positioned at the top of the BMW hierarchy, and the high-performance hybrid is expected to be priced accordingly. Early reports suggest the i8 will carry a sticker price of about $200,000.
Should the price hold true, when the car (http://www.leftlanenews.com/report-bmws-vision-efficientdynamics-concept-to-run-200000.html#) arrives in late 2013, it should undercut the nearest rival Mercedes-Benz (http://www.leftlanenews.com/mercedes-benz.htm)SLS E-Cell electric vehicle by roughly $50,000.

The details on the Vision EfficientDynamics
Its design sets the theme for a series of upcoming BMW road cars (http://www.leftlanenews.com/report-bmws-vision-efficientdynamics-concept-to-run-200000.html#) and proves BMW is discarding the worst excesses of the flame design theory in favor of a lighter, less heavy, more aggressive look.
BMW uses a diesel-electric hybrid system and the layout is more conventional, with the engine up front, driving the rear wheels through the M3’s Getrag double-clutch six-speed gearbox.
The engine, with 163 horsepower and 214 lb-ft. of torque, is all aluminum and produces more power than the 116d’s existing 2.0-liter turbo-diesel BMW engine.
The engine gets crushing acceleration by using two electric motors (http://www.leftlanenews.com/report-bmws-vision-efficientdynamics-concept-to-run-200000.html#) ahead of the gearbox. One of these drives the front wheels under acceleration and the other helps the diesel engine out by adding its torque to the rear axles.
While the motor for the rear wheels produces only 33 horsepower, it has 214 lb-ft. of torque (or, as much again as the diesel engine in its strongest part of the rev range), though it can be over boosted to 51 horsepower.
The front motor is a different type, producing more power (80 horsepower), but less torque (162 lb-ft.), even though it can flit to over 134 horsepower in hard acceleration.
The battery pack to power the electric motors sits inside the chassis tunnel and weighs 187 lbs. and, like the Benz concept, it is a Lithium-ion unit. Inside, the battery has 98 lithium polymer cells which generate 364 Volts and can store 10.8kW/h of electricity.
The strange thing is that the battery is charged as the car is running from the engine and from regenerative braking, or it can be charged as a plug-in from normal 220 Volt/16 Amp systems in two-and-a-half hours.
BMW claims, then, that the car produces 356 horsepower and 590 lb-ft. of torque and, given that it weighs only 3,075 lbs., it will be something of a rocket in a straight line.
It is claiming 0-62 mph times of just 4.8 seconds and it has been limited to 155 mph – both numbers that bring to mind the M3. Almost the exact opposite of the M3, though, is how many resources it consumes to get its performance.
BMW insists its concept will stretch to 75.1 mpg (http://www.leftlanenews.com/report-bmws-vision-efficientdynamics-concept-to-run-200000.html#) Imperial (about 63 mpg U.S.) with a CO2 number below 100 g/km and, it says, people should be prepared for consumption and emission numbers like this to become more common from its brand as hybrid drive systems infiltrate its range of cars.
The car is also capable of running as either a pure diesel or a pure electric car, where it gets a range of 31 miles before the diesel offers another 400 miles of driving on its 6.6 gallon tank.

As the first car of the new, Adrian von Hooydonk era of design at BMW, it also offers strong hints about where BMW wants to take its super critical new-generation 3- and 5-Series. von Hooydonk has taken over as the BMW Group’s design boss and has used the Vision EfficientDynamics to experiment with acres of glass, an all-new interior concept.
At 181 inches long, the slinky concept has four seats and, at 74 inches wide and 48.8 inches tall, is only just bigger than the existing 3-Series coupe.

Bmw i8 a.k.a. Vision EfficientDynamics spotted in Abu Dhabi

http://www.4wheelsnews.com/images/news/13325/bmw_i8_supercar_4__medium.jpg (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/gallery/bmw-i8-aka-vision-efficientdynamics-spotted-in-abu-dhabi/18033) Bmw (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/bmw-i8-aka-vision-efficientdynamics-spotted-in-abu-dhabi/#) i8 Supercar

It appears that Bmw is working hard on its upcoming supercar, the so-called i8 or Vission EfficientDynamics, and it appears that the car (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/bmw-i8-aka-vision-efficientdynamics-spotted-in-abu-dhabi/#) is very close to the production version, as you can see the photos released by a reader of TeamSpeed (http://www.teamspeed.com/forums/general-bmw-mini/52418-bmw-concept-spotted-abu-dhabi.html) forum. In the latest photos, the Bmw i8 also shows a new grey color and honestly to tell you it looks much better than the white colour showed in the concept form. For those who don’t know, the new car will use a combination of a 3-cylinder turbo diesel engine with a hybrid (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/bmw-i8-aka-vision-efficientdynamics-spotted-in-abu-dhabi/#) synchronous motor at the front axle and a full-hybrid engine at the rear axle.

The total output delivered by the car will be 241 kW/328 bhp, enough we’d say to push the vehicle (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/bmw-i8-aka-vision-efficientdynamics-spotted-in-abu-dhabi/#) from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.8 seconds. Still, the fuel consumption delivered by the car is only 3.76 litters/100 kilometers, equal to 75.1 mpg (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/bmw-i8-aka-vision-efficientdynamics-spotted-in-abu-dhabi/#) imp, and CO2 emission rating of 99 grams per kilometer (1,3 l/100km and 33g CO2/km; EU-PHEV ECE-R101).
Furthermore, the car can act as a full-electric car for 50 kilometers or 31 miles, while with some help from the 24-litre diesel tank it will deliver a total range of up to 700 km or 435 miles. Regarding its price, Ian Robertson, BMW Sales and Marketing (http://www.4wheelsnews.com/bmw-i8-aka-vision-efficientdynamics-spotted-in-abu-dhabi/#) Director said that the upcoming Vision EfficientDynamics supercar will cost less than 150,000 Pounds or $200,000.

Spy Shots: BMW i8 spotted winter testing

BMW (http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw) doesn't seem to be too engaged in trying to hide what the company's new i8 (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/i8) supercar will look like when it arrives – in fact, it's been so kind as to leave the label on one of its prototypes. Our keen-eyed spy photographers managed to snap a few quick photos of the vehicle dashing through the snow in northern Sweden during a little cold-weather testing. The machine you see above will be the reigning monarch of the Bavarian automaker's new sub-brand, i (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/02/23/report-bmw-i-wont-be-limited-to-evs/), once it debuts.

Based on the Vision EfficientDynamics (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/vision%20efficient%20dynamics) concept that starred at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show (http://www.autoblog.com/category/frankfurt%20motor%20show), the vehicle is said to pack 2+2 seating, a 0-62 mph time in the 4.8 second range and fuel economy of over 62 mpg U.S., along with a supercar price tag. Look to fork over around $200,000 when this beastie touches down.

There's been some indication that BMW will forgo the thrifty diesel engine of the concept in favor of a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline mill to work in coordination with a hybrid system. While that's bad news bears for diesel fans, the fact that BMW is gearing the platform toward gasoline means that this vehicle will more than likely show up on American shores.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics spotted on the set of Mission: Impossible 4

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/04/05-2011-bmw-vision-efficien-lead.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-bmw-vision-efficientdynamics-concept/)
2011 BMW Vision EfficientDynamics – Click above for high-res image gallery

Mission: Impossible 4 was filming in Mumbai, India with a rolling example of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics/i8 (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/29/report-2013-bmw-vision-efficientdynamics-supercar-moving-toward/) concept on hand and ready for its closeup. The VED was accompanied by a 2011 BMW 6 Series (http://www.autoblog.com/model/6+series) during a scene in which the cars negotiate Mumbai's traffic-clogged streets.

Though there's still little indication of when the proposed 328-horsepower, three-cylinder diesel hybrid sports car will show up, this version looks mighty similar to the one caught lapping in Abu Dhabi (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/31/bmw-vision-efficientdynamics-spotted-in-abu-dhabi-is-it-closer/) last year. BMW's plans for the car are still generally under wraps, but it's likely the production version will break cover wearing the i8 (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/03/13/video-bmw-i8-protoype-rolls-on/) badge. Thanks for the tip, Zohaib!
