View Full Version : GMC Sierra All Terrain HD concept is ready for off-road action
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/12/01-gm-sierra-concept-hd-press-630op.jpg
If you think the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor (http://www.autoblog.com/model/raptor) is too hot yet the Dodge Ram Power Wagon (http://autoblog.com/tag/power+wagon) is too cold, General Motors (http://autoblog.com/make/gm)' latest concept might strike you as "just right." This, the GMC (http://autoblog.com/make/gmc) Sierra All Terrain HD concept, looks to bridge the gap between the two hardcore pickups from GM's crosstown rivals, while still offering top-notch levels of power, refinement and technology.
The four-door 2011 Sierra HD (http://autoblog.com/model/sierra) underpins the All Terrain concept, and power comes from The General's 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8. A six-speed automatic sends the 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels. Versus a normal Sierra HD, ground clearance has been increased by about three inches, width has been bumped up to 73 inches (four more than normal) and the whole package rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in 35-inch BFGoodrich KM2 mud terrain tires. Off-road performance is enhanced with the addition of Fox off-road shocks (just like the Ford Raptor).
Inside, GM has fitted the All Terrain concept with a Denali-spec interior with additional satin metal finishes and a leather-wrapped dash. What's more, a next-generation stereo system with an 80-gigabyte hard drive has been fitted inside this concept, and we'll soon be seeing this new system across the full GM product range.
Currently, there are no plans to create a production version of the All Terrain concept, though GM tells us that if a road-ready version of this ultra-tough Sierra is produced, it will likely be crafted with the assistance of an aftermarket company. We'll be seeing the All Terrain concept in person at the Detroit Auto Show in just a few weeks, but for now, click through our high-res image gallery below, or follow the jump (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/16/detroit-preview-gmc-sierra-all-terrain-hd-concept-is-ready-for/#continued) for the official release.

Too heavy for Baja, too heavy and not the right front axle for rock crawling, too heavy for muddin. Looks like a very expensive mall crawler which if it does see production (highly doubtful) will cost ~$60k I'm guessing. I see a lot of females that usually bought hummers buying this or guys with small penis' who never even let their trucks see dirt

I would take mine to the dunes every chance I got and mudding when not at the dunes. Either way the raptor is still only like $42k. But that's only what I would do if I had one. I'm talking my dad into buying a four door once they come out and my parents will have their Navigator payed off by then too so I see it happening within a year and a half or so

That sounds like a good idea. Encourage your parents with grown children to go into continued debt to have a vehicle that is going to be beat to shit if used as intended/within your wishes.

I do not think it would be a widened frame
wider axle
wider front susp components
wider wheel/tire pkg
similar to the Raptor

Amen. I'm not a truck guy, but I'd MUCH prefer a 6.2L F150 Raptor. That thing is the real deal and is really quite a steal for $42-44K. This Sierra looks like most any poser truck running the street of JOCO. The Raptor is pure business.

The Raptor seemed to be doing just fine during some pretty aggressive driving in last week's Top Gear episode. One of the more recent Car & Driver mags has an article on the Raptor where they flat out beat it to crap on a 4000 mile trip through unpaved roads in Canada. It came away with a bent exhaust tip.

Yes, maybe I am quick to pass judgement on a vehicle that doesn't even exist yet. I guess I'm just jaded from GM's past of overpromising and underdelivering. They always seem to do things about 80% of the way and then stop.
SVT is a true high performance tuning group. They've done some amazing things with relatively mundane cars and trucks. IMO, they're right there with AMG, M division, etc. SVT did some serious chassis tuning and parts development for the Raptor. The Raptor truely can do what it advertizes which is to fly over the beaten path at silly fast speeds. The Sierra on the otherhand sure appears to me to be a glorified city truck. The wheels and tires are too large and too wide for serious offroad treking. The truck will surely weigh more than the 7,469lb weight of the current Sierra HD 4X4 diesel extended cab. That's a whopping 1,300lbs more than the Raptor. My question is where does this truck fit in? We know the Raptors purpose. It's a turn-key, over the counter Baha truck. Based on the specs, this Sierra definitely isn't a Baha level material; it's way too big for rock crawling; too heavy and plush for mudding; very expensive with a base MSRP of $47K (expect this one to top $60K+ or about $18K more than the Raptor), and surely won't be very quick with all that weight. So what's it purpose again? From what I'm seeing, it's a poser truck. Sorry if that offends the GM fanboys.

Mostly I find it humorous. I can easily say I'd buy something and do XXX with it when I don't own it. Having real Bennies in the real deal does change things for mature, rational thinking adults 99% of the time.

My comments were directed at the comments of some on this board who obviously can't/don't own one(or they would) to be talking about a vehicle out of or on the border of their financial resources to go out and beat it up incurring the costs and repair bills(those not covered)that would inevitably be involved.
Shit, Tommy, we've all been through this before. You know the friends who always want you to go out and do shit with your stuff they'd never do with their own for one reason or another. Cause they aren't footing the bills for you, or on a vehicle they only talk about IF they owned it.

That truck may be capable of going places a lot of other trucks can't (aside from the raptor) Biggest downfall though is that it is way too much truck to go to those places. I don't know of any 10,000 lb fifth wheels that would be able to follow that truck. That being the case, the Raptor is a much better platform for the niche. Unless someone puts a lift kit on their fifth wheel camper and finds a trail wide enough to accommodate them both.

GMC Sierra All Terrain HD Concept is ready to play dirty
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/01/01-gmc-sierra-all-terrain-hd-concept630.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gmc-sierra-hd-concept/) GMC Sierra All Terrain HD concept – Click above for high-res image gallery
Cars are cool, but we certainly love ourselves some big, bad, hardcore pickups – you know, like the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor (http://autoblog.com/model/raptor). General Motors (http://autoblog.com/make/gm)' conceptual answer to Ford (http://autoblog.com/make/ford)'s desert-blasting pickup is this, the Sierra All Terrain HD concept (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/16/detroit-preview-gmc-sierra-all-terrain-hd-concept-is-ready-for/), which we'll be seeing for the first time at the Detroit Auto Show (http://autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show) next week.
GMC's brutish pickup relies on The General's 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 for power – 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque, to be exact – and higher ground clearance, a wider stance and serious suspension upgrades make the All Terrain concept capable of storming through, well, all types of terrain.
Word on the street is that if GM gets up the gall to produce such a truck, it will likely be outfitted by a second-tier firm outside of the GM production lines (like a Roush F-150, for example). Regardless, we want this thing to be built, and badly. See a whole slate of new high-res photos for yourself in the gallery below. Oh, and don't forget about the Ram Runner (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/06/chrysler-to-let-you-build-your-own-dodge-ram-runner/), Chrysler's (http://autoblog.com/make/chrysler)foray into the niche.

GMC Sierra All Terrain HD Concept is being considered for production

We've already crawled all over the GMC Sierra All Terrain HD Concept (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/11/detroit-2011-gmc-sierra-all-terrain-concept-is-steroid-riddled/) at the Detroit Auto Show (http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/), and Mike Levin from PickupTrucks.com took an extensive look at the interior and exterior (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/22/video-pickuptrucks-com-gets-a-closer-look-at-the-gmc-sierra-all/) with designer Carl Zipfel. The questions we really wanted to get answered were, of course, "Are you going to build it? And if not, can we build it?"
As to whether GMC (http://www.autoblog.com/make/gmc) is considering bringing it to market – built on a GMC line or by a partner firm – GMC communications rep Kelly Cusinato said "My understanding is that, yes," production feasibility is on the table.
In its favor is that Zipfel's team started with a production truck. "It's the best of the Duramax HD with more off-roading capability," he said, "built with an existing Duramax diesel and existing supplier connections."
When asked if a customer could build it, Zipfel said an HD owner could replicate "everything but the lights." You can't get the 5'8" bed on the 2500 Duramax HD, and widening the track by four inches would be a slightly lesser challenge. Otherwise, the chassis wasn't chopped to create the shortened front end, and Zipfeld said, "We think we're in striking distance for crash testing if GMC decided to build it."

As to where it fits on the Raptor (http://www.autoblog.com/model/raptor)/Ram Runner (http://autoblog.com/tag/ram%20runner)/Power Wagon (http://autoblog.com/tag/power%20wagon) depth chart, it's two inches shorter than the Raptor and seven inches shorter than the Power Wagon. Zipfel said, "We asked what are the voids, and we came up with an HD chassis and power, tire size, suspension and suspension geometry. The Raptor is a pre-runner and a 1500 series, and the suspension geometry of a pre-runner is a bit different for higher speeds. The Ram Runer is also the prerunner formula." He feels the Power Wagon is closest, but it only offers a gas engine, whereas for the GMC Concept "part of the key ingredients is the diesel for towing and hauling, pulling a trailer." The secondary jounce shock system, designed with Fox Racing and Light Racing, "is different than what's on the Raptor and works well with a heavy duty truck."
If not the truck, what you will be able to get in a couple of years are its hue and exterior trim finish. Said creative designer Gulya Kuldjanov, "The color is Iridium Metallic and it will be offered as a GMC exclusive color in a couple of years, and the dark anodized satin finish" around the windows.
To those wondering about the any production plans for the GMC Granite Concept (http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGdSGtBy5NJekAIvxXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTE1Y2NuYmx oBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMwRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkA1ZJUDA0M18xO TE-/SIG=13ng6td04/EXP=1294948653/**http%3a//www.autoblog.com/2010/01/11/detroit-2010-gmc-granite-takes-professional-grade-in-a-new-dire/) from last year's show, Cusinato said "There's nothing new to add on the Granite Concept."

Damn, Ram Runner looking good. Now if they only offered the 6.1L 425hp or the new 6.4 500hp erwhatever dodge has comming for the srt8's. They would have the Raptor beat in looks and power.
I dont even like thinking it, but the new Rams look better than all the other trucks out right now. I take that back... But they do.dont

The grand total for the entire package with the Stage 2 suspension? $20,659 plus installation fees if your loca Mopar shop does the work. Of course, a Ram 1500 has to be purchased separately
So you'll end up paying $45-$55k on a regular cab Runner or $50-$60k for a crew cab Dodge Runner in order to compete with a $42-$45k Raptor. Sorry but the Raptor is still the best bang for the buck and I still think it looks better than the Dodge Runner and that's not the Ford owner in me talking.

Best bang for your buck... Being its a kit you dont have to buy a new 45K+ truck anyways, its just a factory option. Find a beat to fck ram, make a prerunner = best bang for you buck... You wouldnt have to get all the extra stuff, fenders yes, but anything else would be another option.

Best bang for your buck if you buying it new and want max features = Raptor (even better buck and not bang, prices have to be droping on the 5.4L raptors at some point)
And if you couldnt tell what i was hoping for, 6.4L 500hp srt8runner... And I dont think it would be cheap. Anyway you make it.

I'm sure it's possible but not cheap. Turning a 2wd truck into a 4wd prerunner will cost you more than buying a brand new crew cab

It was more like a dream, than a actual tought. And you wouldnt have to make it 4wd for me to be happy. I would venture to say most prerunners are 2wd (IDK) due to weight/suspension problems/cost/highspeed driving/fuel use... I know 4wd is a huge plus on a DD new truck like the raptor/ramrunner. But almost un-needed in a long highspeed baja style race/event.
Im just happy to see other companies follow the raptors platform. The vids i just saw on the Ramrunner look week at best anyways but its a start.
Dodge has the 390hp 5.7 now, the 6.1L 425hp, And with the new 6.4L and claims of 500hp. They have the power to play with at least, now if they would use it.

Most all prerunners are 4wd with ifs with extended arms and four linked rear ends but it really all depends on the"class" you're in but there are both 2wd and 4wd classes
