Hello, I am new to DSLR's and just picked one up. I have a picture of my old mustang from a couple years ago that a guy took a picture of with his. The colors are crazy with it, and was wondering if anyone knew how this was done?

I believe it's HDR... Personally I'm not a fan of it at all...

Looks like fake HDR and bunch of buring around the car and jacked up contrast. You do not want to recreate this look.

OK, I know its amature....just wanted to know the idea around it. What is HDR? Is that just a software?

True HDR is a combination of multiple photos at different exposure settings to combine the properly exposed areas of the photo together to mimic the human eye's ability more closely.
This is what HDR SHOULD be

So it apears it is the adjustment of the photo that does it, but you usually use multiple images to do it? I would just like to know how to do it correctly. I found another good example online

That's overdone and probably fake HDR.
You can achieve he same thing with one photo, kinda like my sig, but it's not true HDR. Adobe photoshop can do it, photomatix has an HDR filter plugin but it's just playing with shadows and highlights, not really combining photos like true HDR should.

How would this be done, for example, where only one shot can be taken?

As I said, photomatix has a plug in that allows you to mess with the high and low lights with just one photo. Not True HDR.

Here's a photo of my Grandpa I just did using phototmatix. Don't do this. It's stupid.

A couple years ago everyone was obsessed with the HDR look until it became done to death. It's no different than the vintage-hipster-'prodslrwithpolaroidediting' trend that's so heavy right now. If you like the look, go for it

shadow/highlight tool in photoshop is how the fake hdr is done.

Ugh, that just looks awful.
He could have made the photo much better by asking his buddies to step away from the car so to avoid reflections.
But no, its all about the sweet editing!!!

I HATE this current hipster look. An old highschool Facebook friend who's husband runs a photography studio posts this crap all the time. It looks terrible. All the pictures have a green hue and I just hate it. I bite my tounge everytime she posts something.

HDR was invented by the photo gods as a means of profiling GWC's.
