Here at work our 50d's shutter button is having a few issues off and on. I have been thinking about sending it in for repair, but got to thinking about something. Canon quotes the shutter life expectancy at 100,000 actuation's. Well I shoot on average around 700 shots per day with it. So generally speaking I would reach the expected life at around 5 months. The camera is definitly over 5 months old already.

So the question I propose is this, would you pay to have the camera repaired knowing the shutter could also go out any time?

Or would you sell the camera and get a new one?

Hmm, interesting dilemma Ryan. I'd be tempted to look at used 50D or 60D prices, and weigh out the options.

First thing I would do is make this same post over on potn. Not that you can't get a good opinion over here, but there are a lot more people over there that will comment, and may have had a similar problem. I was reading the other day that some of the 40d's had a shutter button problem that was pretty common, and supposedly it is an easy fix. I know you're talking about a 50d here, but maybe they could have a similar problem. I did a quick google search and It looks like that could be the case, but I just don't think it's as common with the 50d as it is with the 40d.

All that said. I would try to fix it myself or just pick up a new body. I don't think it would be worth sending in for the fix considering the amount of clicks on the camera. Where do you work?

I take it you don't have a backup body? What I would do is first what Sean said, secondly it might be worth it to get a ETA from Canon for having it back if you would send it in. Then, schedule that time out for your business and send it in during that time. That way you don't have to worry about rescheduling any missed appointments and you get it fixed. Sure, you'll loose money, but at least you won't be making customers upset and loosing possible business.
