Default Won't You Be My Neighbor?

Tom Hanks is Mr. Rogers In First Look Image

Tom Hanks transforms into Fred Rogers in a first-look image from the upcoming Untitled Mr. Rogers/Tom Hanks Project. Coincidentally, the traditional narrative biopic about Rogers' life will hit theaters a year after the acclaimed documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor? explored the cultural impact of the children's television show Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, which ran for 31 seasons. It is directed by Marielle Heller, who is coming off this year's festival darling Can You Ever Forgive Me?.

Hanks signed on to star as Rogers in January of this year and will lead an ensemble that also includes Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson, and Chris Cooper. Sony set the film for an October 2019 release date, but they've wasted no time in generating anticipation for what's in store. Fans can now see how Hanks looks as Mr. Rogers.

The studio unveiled an image today, which you can see in the space below. Hanks is seen sporting Rogers' trademark red sweater and definitely appears to be warm and inviting as he welcomes viewers to his neighborhood:

Sony also released a short synopsis for the film. The main crux of the narrative will follow the dynamic between Rogers and journalist Tom Junod (Rhys), who is tasked with writing a profile on Rogers for a magazine. Being sold as a "timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism," there's hope that Mr. Rogers will be a sweet and touching reprieve in what is currently a trying and divided period for the country. Rogers had a way of bringing people of all walks of life together, so ideally viewers will walk out of this biopic feeling inspired to make a positive difference in the world. Hanks seems like the perfect choice for this role, as he's been one of the industry's most beloved actors for generations. If anyone can accurately portray Rogers' qualities and characteristics onscreen, it's him.

Though we've barely just started this year's awards season, it's hard not to picture Mr. Rogers becoming a contender at the 2020 Oscars. At this point, the on-paper pedigree speaks for itself, especially after Can You Ever Forgive Me? surprised many pundits at Telluride and Toronto. Many critics were impressed by Heller's deft direction and the performances she got out of Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant, so it'll be interesting to see what magic she works with Hanks at her side. Hopefully, Mr. Rogers is as fulfilling an experience as Won't You Be My Neighbor?.

‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’ Photo Shows Tom Hanks Throwing a Shoe as Mr. Rogers

Are you sitting down? You better grab a seat, because the intensity of this brand new, piping hot, fresh-off-the-presses A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood photo is going to knock the breath right out of your chest. Steel yourself for what you’re about to see, because director Marielle Heller‘s Mr. Rogers biopic is getting real. Check out star Tom Hanks in action in the photo below.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Photo

“There’s an awful lot you can tell about a person by their shoes.” That’s a quote from one of Hanks’ most famous cinematic characters: Professor D.H. Gorr from The Ladykillers. I’m kidding – that’s actually a Forrest Gump quote. But can we apply its wisdom to this new photo of Hanks as delightful children’s television host Mr. Rogers? Can we learn anything about this man from his shoes?
Mr. Rogers would occasionally toss his shoes in the air on the actual show, but who knows – maybe Hanks is putting his own spin on the real-life man by switching up his shoe technique here. Maybe he’s a magician in this movie, and the shoe materialized out of nowhere as the conclusion to a personalized magic trick. Maybe Hanks’ version of Mr. Rogers loves playing catch with the employees of his public access TV show, and when Frank got their group football lodged in the rafters of the studio (damn it, Frank! We told you not to lob it so high!), the crafty Rogers made the unorthodox decision to keep the game alive by substituting his left shoe for the ball. But where is his right shoe? Is it on his foot? Is he juggling it, and it’s been flung so high that it’s above the edge of the frame? WE NEED ANSWERS.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this picture of Tom Hanks with a shoe. Here’s the film’s synopsis:
Two-time Oscar-winner Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about empathy, kindness, and decency from America’s most beloved neighbor.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood arrives in theaters on November 22, 2019.

Based on the article by journalist Tom Junod, who profiled Rogers for Esquire, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood follows Rhys’ jaded journalist as he embarks on an assignment to profile the beloved TV personality and is slowly won over by the man’s kindness and compassion.
Hanks embodies Mr. Rogers to a tee — not by doing an impression of the TV host, but by radiating that same empathy and warmth that somehow seemed to flow from Mr. Rogers. It’s a performance that elevates A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood beyond a simple inspirational biopic, as /Film reviewer Meredith Borders writes in her review from TIFF: “Hanks’ performance goes so far beyond imitation into embodying, even channeling. That genuine, tangible warmth, goodness, kindness, peace that Mister Rogers sent through television screens into our hearts for decades? Hanks is now sending it through the big screen. Seconds into his screentime and members of my audience were already sniffling.”
Here’s the A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood synopsis:
Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod.
