Default I finally got one

I decided this year to start autocrossing the Elantra Sport to have some fun in it. Fun it was, but it highlighted shortcomings with the car to the point that I wanted to start modding it finally. Aftermarket parts isn't exactly the strong point of that car. Mods are a ton of money with little performance improvement. I lost interest.

I started browsing to see what was out there and came across this thing. After haggling for a few days the deal looked good so I took the family to Dallas over Labor Day weekend, we picked this up, and had a mini vacation while we were there.



It's a 2017 Volkswagen GTI Autobahn. Manual transmission. 13k miles on the clock. The car has every option available outside of the driver assistance package so it has the performance package (+10hp, Golf R brakes, different rear sway bar, LSD), leather, the "panoramic" sunroof, Fender audio, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation/avoidance, dynamic chassis control (can adjust the suspension from the infotainment screen) with driver modes, etc. It's faster than the Elantra was, rides nicer, handles better, brakes better, gets better fuel economy. It's just a shit ton more car but at $36,000 (that's what the original window sticker shows) new it better be.

Why Dallas? I got $3,000 more on trade in and GTIs in general were cheaper down there. It's hard to find loaded up ones with a manual transmission as well. I bought this particular car for under what it's trade in value is because it has some dings and scratches that need to be fixed. It's not the best example of one but damn it was so much cheaper than the rest.

Is it fast? Faster than the Elantra was at least. It feels about as fast as my 2013 Jetta GLI was once it was APR tuned. As far as mod plans go I want to change out the wheels for different OEM wheels (no clue what), swap out the muffler for a GTI Clubsport version, change out some factory programming with OBDEleven, and probably throw a JB1/Neuspeed/Dinan plug and play tune on it down the road. I don't want to get a full on ECU tune because they are clutch killers and because TD1 FTL.

Nice car. GTI's are nice. I recently picked up a hot hatch myself and considered both the GTI and Golf R.

Should make for a nice upgrade from the Elantra, and do miles better in autox.

The Elantra was surprisingly good at autocross actually. The Fiesta ST is the HS go-to but I was hanging in there with a damn good national level HS guy and beating out the rest of the Fiesta STs. For what it is, it's a pretty capable car with a bigger rear sway bar and stickier tires. That said, with comparable mods the GTI should eat it up.

Congrats on your purchase. The RS is such an awesome, and capable, car!
