LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Season 3 Adds THE PHANTOM Actor Billy Zane As Another Real-Life Historical Figure

We've had J.R.R. Tolkien and George Lucas, and now it's being reported that Billy Zane (The Phantom, Demon Night) has been added to the cast of Legends of Tomorrow as another figure from history.

He was many fans' pick for Lex Luthor back in the day, but now ET reports that Billy Zane (Dead Calm, Demon Night, The Phantom) has joined the DC TV universe as a very different sort of villain.

Zane will play B.T. Barnum in one episode of the upcoming third season of The CW's Legends of Tomorrow.

Barnum was a nineteenth century politician, showman, and businessman, who is remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus. According to EP Phil Klemperer, their take on Barnum will play an antagonistic role:
"I’ve wanted to bring Billy onto LEGENDS every since I saw him in a friend’s comedy pilot. I’m not sure that people know how funny Billy is, although we cast him as P.T. Barnum because we knew that he would be able to find the soul beneath the larger-than-life showman. Truth is, Barnum never said ‘there’s a sucker born every minute.’ He was less a conman, more the father of modern advertising. A guy who made things ‘go viral’ before that was a thing. Sure, in one sense, he’s the villain of our story, but in another, he’s just a guy who wants to put on a good show. Anyone who works in TV can relate to that, right?! Anyway, Billy seemed like the perfect guy to get that duality."

Legends of Tomorrow season 3, episode 1:
“After crash landing the Waverider in a version of 2017 Los Angeles where dinosaurs roam the streets and the skyline is adorned with London’s iconic Big Ben clock tower, the Legends were quick to realize that “we broke time.” Last year, the loveable band of misfit heroes traveled throughout the timeline fixing a series of Aberrations.”

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Season 3 Adds Gorilla Grodd to Its Villain Line-Up [TCA 2017]

During a Television Critics Association panel for Legends of Tomorrow, producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that Gorilla Grodd would be one of the villains in the show’s third season. Speaking with reporters after the panel, Guggenheim confirmed that the Legends would encounter Grodd after the two-part Gorilla City episode of The Flash last season.

“It’s not a direct pickup from the two part Flash episode,” Guggenheim said. “It’s a post-Gorilla City Grodd. He’ll be part of this group of villains. We’re going to have a group of villains that’s going to have a little bit more of a rotating membership than we had last year. We want to give you the sense of a group like we had last year because that was a lot of fun. There will be a little bit more rotation also so we can also give you a little bit more variety.”
In adding Gorilla Grodd, a major VFX character, Guggenheim confirmed he would not be needed on The Flash. “It was a conversation because any time we take a character from one of the other shows, we have to have a conversation like, ‘Are you planning on using Grodd? When would you be using Grodd?’” Guggenheim said. “Same thing when we got Cisco or Felicity on Legends or if Felicity goes over to Flash. We’re all on the same floor and we all talk to each other. We have to. Otherwise, there are times we wanted one character to be on one show and it’s like no, that character’s in a coma that week. We don’t have full control over the broadcast but we do write with an eye towards what we think the broadcast air dates would be. We try to make sure all the stories are talking to each other in that sense.”
The new group of villains may have a name from the DC canon, like last year’s Legion of Doom. “I have a name for them that I would love to see referenced on the show,” Guggenheim said. “Sort of like the Legion of Doom, we’ve got to figure out a way to get it in there.”
Neal McDonaugh will return as Damien Darhk, leading this group of villains. “This group is distinctly led by Damien,” Guggenheim said. Wentworth Miller is also returning as Leonard Snart.
A new hero joins the Waverider. Tala Ashe plays Zari, a Muslim superhero. Zari is based on the comic book character Isis. Guggenheim said they chose not to refer to Isis for fear of connotations of the terrorist group ISIS.
“We just didn’t want the baggage quite frankly,” Guggenheim said. “Especially given the fact that we’re doing a Muslim superhero, it was like opening a can of worms that there’s no percentage in it.”
Ashe herself spoke about Zari during the panel. “The legends meet Zari in 2042 and 2042 is a pretty bleak dystopian police state,” she said. “Zari is speaking truth to power in the ways she can. One of those ways is she’s a hacktivist. She encounters the Legends and I think there’s sort of a philosophical challenge there. She sees they’re going to fix these anachronisms in history but she challenges them is there a way to be legends and be humanitarians, try to improve history, not just fix history. There’s going to be some tension there and also she’s very guarded because of what she has to endure in her world. I think she’s reticent to go into the fold of the Legends at first.”
Arthur Darville returns as Rip Hunter in the season premiere and one episode goes back to Ray Palmer’s (Brandon Routh) childhood. Guggenheim also encouraged fans to look for Easter Eggs in the Legends of Tomorrow season three trailer.
“I would watch the Legends trailer really carefully,” he said. “There’s two Easter eggs in there that I think are a lot of fun.”

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW's New Muslim Superhero Is A Response To Donald Trump And Current US Politics

If you recognize the name of the Egyptian computer hacker boarding the Waverider in Legends of Tomorrow season 3, it's because Adrianna Tomaz also goes by The Mighty Isis in the pages of DC Comics.

The initial news that actress Tala Ashe would be portraying a Muslim computer hacker from the future named Zari Adrianna Tomaz and that, per executive producer Marc Guggenheim, she was a character, "not original to the show but not from the comics and not from any of the other DC Arrowverse shows" was a bit of a head-scratcher.

Then, comic book sleuths quickly realized that Zari Adrianna Tomaz was a derivative of Andrea Thomas, the star character in the the 1970s watching Saturday-morning television The Shazam/Isis Hour. The character would also go on to have her own DC comic book titled The Mighty Isis, which didn't last very long.

The character remained in comic book limbo until 2006, when the DC Comics mega-event 52 introduced readers to Adrianna Tomaz, an Egyptian servant of Black Adam who eventually won his heart and convinced him to change his ways from outright villain to reluctant anti-hero.

It appears Adrianna Tomaz's introduction to DC's Legends of Tomorrow was a byproduct of the current U.S. political climate and President Donald Trump. Speaking at the TCA's Guggenheim stated, "You might have heard there was this election. Not to get political, but something that we all gravitated toward in the writers room was making this character Muslim...It’s not just politicians — a lot of the heroes of real life are letting us down. We’re being let down as a society."

Fellow executive producer Phil Klemmer echoed, "We’re all looking toward the day when 2017 is in the history book and hopefully isn’t the last day in the history book. I find the current world difficult to comprehend."

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Will Have An Occult Focus In Season 3; Matt Ryan Sought For CONSTANTINE Guest Spot

After featuring science and time-travel adversaries, DC's Legends of Tomorrow will face a magic-oriented super villain group which has the producers "campaigning" for a Constantine appearance.

As we previously reported, Damian Darhk is set to be featured as an antagonist for the Legends of Tomorrow in season 3, along with Gorilla Grodd. But the two DC Comics supervillains will be part of a larger, magic-oriented group with its own nefarious agenda for the damaged timeline. Per IGN, this development has the showrunners, "campaigning for Matt Ryan's Constantine to appear." Whether they have to appeal to Ryan himself or their CW bosses remains unclear.

As for the leader of this occult-focused group, Legends showrunner Phil Klemmer stated, "This is a non-human entity. This is a much more supernatural, spooky vibe this season. We're dealing more with magic. It's less real-world bad guys."

Of course, the Legends will stil need to deal with various time maladies but where season 2 presented "aberrations," historic events that have been altered in some fashion; season 3 will showcase "anachronisms," cases of famous historical figures being transplanted to different time periods than their own. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim teased that the mystical baddies will have more rotating members than season 2's Legion of Doom (Reverse-Flash, Malcolm Merlyn, Captain Cold and Damian Darhk).

Wentowrth Miller is also confirmed to be featured in a guest spot, playing a "bizarro" version of Captain Cold.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Adds SUPERNATURAL Actress Courtney Ford As Damien Darhk's Daughter

Hot off a fun turn on Supernatural, Courtney Ford has signed on for a villainous role on the upcoming third season of DC's Legends of Tomorrow where she'll star opposite her husband, Brandon Routh.

Entertainment Weekly has learned that Legends of Tomorrow season three has cast Courtney Ford as Damien Darhk's daughter Eleanor, who is being described as a "smart and cunning woman with a charming dose of otherworldly creepiness. Her innocent looks can be disarming, but it’s all an act. This woman is dangerous with an uncanny ability to manipulate others, and is able to tell people exactly what they want to hear. She’s highly intelligent and is always several moves ahead."

She will make her series debut in episode five and will recur throughout the season. Details on her evil plans remain under wraps, but it's expected that she'll team with her mysteriously resurreceted father to take on our time-displaced heroes. Additionally, on a lighter (and slightly more hilarious) note, Ray Palmer, who is played by Ford's real-life husband Brandon Routh, will - for some inexplicable reason - find himself irresistibly attracted to Eleanor, despite her villainy.

Ford recently wrapped a five-episode arc on Supernatural and is also well known for her roles on Dexter, Parenthood, True Blood, Murder in the First, Revenge, and Fallout 4.

So, what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW: The Legends Are Back In Business On The Official Season 3 Poster

In just under two weeks, get ready for the wildest season of DC's Legends of Tomorrow as all of our favorite Legends get the band back together in order to fix the timeline and stop a deadly new threat.

Following the new posters for Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow, The CW has released the official poster for Legends of Tomorrow season three, which gives us a new look at our core group of heroes.

Sara Lance, a.k.a. White Canary (Caity Lotz) takes command of the team - in a new suit, no less - and is joined by The Atom (Brandon Routh), both parts of Firestorm (Franz Drameh & Victor Garber), Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), Steel (Nick Zano), and the baddest mother****er of them all, Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell).

Check out the official season three poster below:

"Aruba-Con" - (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET) (TV-14, LV) (HDTV)

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME - When the Legends realize that they broke the timeline, Rip Hunter (guest star Arthur Darvill) arrives with his new organization - the Time Bureau - to relieve them of duty. The Legends are thrilled to get a chance to put the team back together but a new threat arises when Rory (Dominic Purcell) spots Julius Caesar (guest star Simon Merrells) in Aruba. Sara (Caity Lotz), Nate (Nick Zano) and Ray (Brandon Routh) devise a plan to steal the Waverider back from the Time Bureau in order to try and stop Julius Caesar from conquering the modern world. Victor Garber, Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Franz Drameh also star. Rob Seidenglanz directed the episode written by Phil Klemmer & Marc Guggenheim (#301). Original airdate 10/10/2017.
After defeating the Legion of Doom, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow face a new existential threat created by their actions at the end of last season. By revisiting a moment in time they’d already participated in, they’ve essentially fractured the timeline and created anachronisms all across time! Our team must find a way to return all the anachronisms to their original timelines before the time stream falls apart. But before our Legends can jump back into action, Rip Hunter and his newly established Time Bureau call their methods into question and disband the team. Challenging the Time Bureau’s authority, they recruit a hacker from the future, Zari Tomaz and continue their time travelling shenanigans, while insisting that however messy their methods may be, some problems are beyond the Bureau’s capabilities. Some problems can only be fixed by Legends.

'Legends of Tomorrow' Showrunner Explains Anachronisms vs Aberrations

On The CW's Legends of Tomorrow, the time-hopping misfit heroes don't exactly have the tidiest approach to saving the world and those messy methods create problems in the timeline. Now, we’re finding out the differences in the Legends’ temporal problems.
Both last season’s aberrations and the third season’s anachronisms are errors in the timeline, but what's the difference between the two? Showrunner Marc Guggenheim recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and explained that while the two are similar, the difference comes down to whether the misplaced thing is supposed to exist — or not.
"The way we describe anachronisms is its people, places, and things that are displaced in time, which is different from aberrations, which was like something happened, it wasn't supposed to happen, or something didn't happen that was supposed to happen," Guggenheim explained. "We did that last year. This is people, places, and things that shouldn't be where they are."
And if the Legends are just having to deal with getting people, places, and things – like Julius Caesar, who happens to show up on the beach with Mick — back to where in time they belong this season fans might think the heroes will have an easier time of things, but Guggenheim goes on to explain that that might not be the case in part because anachronisms can cause bigger problems.
"I wouldn't say that they're [anachronisms] are harder or easier," he said. "I would just say that they are very different, because what makes the stories more interesting is it's not just about whether or not Julius Caesar is removed from his time and you've got to put him back in the box, it's what did he do when he was displaced that has screwed things up? So now there's multiple problems to solve."
The Legends won't have the luxury of solving those multiple problems on their own, though. While Rip Hunter left the team at the end of last season he hasn't left the time business. Hunter returns with a new team, the Time Bureau, that isn't exactly keen on the Legends methods, especially since they're the ones who broke time in the first place. Guggenheim said that the two teams may have the same goal, but they go about it very differently.
"We say this a lot in the premiere, the Time Bureau is the scalpel, whereas the Legends are the chainsaws," Guggenheim said. "They fix time, but they're not pretty about it and they break a lot of eggs on the way to their omelets, whereas the Time Bureau is much more proper and they turn sharp corners and they do it without all the consequential damage to property and time, but probably also with a lot less fun."

'Legends of Tomorrow' EP Addresses How The Time Bureau Will Affect The Team

X

The Legends will have some competition this season, but they didn't see that coming from their former leader.
As the Legends attempt to fix time, they'll have plenty of run-ins with Rip Hunter's new group of time travelers, the Time Bureau. It would seem the Legends of Tomorrow are back in the underdog role this season, and Legends executive producer Marc Guggenheim explains why.
"My hope is that we’ve touched on that at least in season 2," Guggenheim told EW. "For us, it’s always been this consistent idea that these guys, as the saga sell says every week, they’re outcasts and misfits. We always approach the name Legends, both in terms of dialogue and in terms of the title, as ironic, because we always say, “They’re not heroes, they’re legends.” They’re something a little left of center."
That's in direct contrast to Rip's new group, the Time Bureau. In many ways, they are the team he always wanted the Legends to be.
"So what the Time Bureau represents is the proper way to do things," Guggenheim said. "We say this a lot in the premiere, the Time Bureau is the scalpel, whereas the Legends are the chainsaw. They fix time, but they’re not pretty about it and they break a lot of eggs on the way to their omelets, whereas the Time Bureau is much more proper and they turn sharp corners and they do it without all the consequential damage to property and time, but probably also with a lot less fun."
Guggenheim revealed how they describe the differences between the two teams internally, which is best summed up with some Beverly Hills Cop.
"The example we always use is it’s like Beverly Hills Cop," Guggenheim said. "The Beverly Hills Police Department is an awesome, awesome institution. They turn sharp corners also and they’re very proper and always doing the right thing, but every now and again you need Axel Foley to really get things done. That relationship, the antagonism between Axel Foley and the Beverly Hills Police Department, is kind of what we’re going for in season 3 with Legends and the Time Bureau."

Matt Ryan's John Constantine Confirmed For LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Season 3 Appearance

There have been rumblings for a while that we might see Matt Ryan return as John Constantine in the third season of Legends of Tomorrow and it's now been confirmed that he's coming to The CW series...

Constantine was cancelled after a single season on NBC because the network mishandled the series from day one but this iteration of the character has lived thanks to an appearance in Arrow and an upcoming CW Seed animated series. However, it's now been confirmed that Matt Ryan will reprise the role in Legends of Tomorrow season three. That's been rumoured for a while but is now 100% official.

Showrunner Phil Klemmer made that clear in a recent interview while he was listing some of the adventures we can expect the group of time travelling heroes to go on during the third season.

"We get Billy Zane and the circus [in the second episode]; we get a little Julius Caesar on the beach in Aruba in the premiere," he told Rotten Tomatoes. "We meet [new team member] Zari in this sort of dystopian future. We get to do a little Amblin alien episode back in the ’80s; we do some Jack the Ripper Victorian London; Golden Age of Hollywood; John Constantine doing an exorcism."

How exactly the team will cross paths with Constantine remains to be seen, especially as he's not exactly much of a time-traveller! Many fans would love to see him join the Legends so if this opens the door to that happening, it's definitely a bonus. What do you guys think? Share your thoughts below.

'DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow' Producer Confirms Constantine's Bisexuality

X

Constantine is about to make a comeback, and fans ready to see the hero return to the small screen. Earlier today, ComicBook reported the occult detective will star in multiple episodes of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow next season. And, now, the show’s producer has confirmed a major bit about John Constantine’s sexuality.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Phil Klemmer opened up about Constantine’s return and his TV return. It was there the executive producer said the character is bisexual.
"As for the character of Constantine, we knew that an alienated, chain-smoking, bisexual, world-weary demonologist would feel right at home among our Legends," Klemmer explained.
For fans, Constantine’s sexuality has been little discussed in the live-action realm; However, comic readers will know the character has been represented as queer in the canon. Back in 2002, it was first revealed in Ashes & Dust in the City of Angels that Constantine had been in a romantic relationship with another man. DC Comics and Vertigo backed off from further exploration afterward, but Hellblazer #1 brought back the idea when Constantine flirted hard with a burly barista.
Fans had hoped Constantine would exhibit his bisexuality in NBC’s since-cancelled series, but they were out of luck. The show’s producer David Cerone was asked once if the hero would be queer, and the executive said there were no plans for such representation.
“In those comic books, John Constantine aged in real time. Within this tome of three decades [of comics] there might have been one or two issues where he's seen getting out of bed with a man,” Cerone said. “So [maybe] 20 years from now? But there are no immediate plans.”
If you are curious about how Constantine will fit into Legends of Tomorrow next season, then you are in luck. Klemmer did give a short rundown of the hero’s two-part appearance which you can read below:
"His appearance in episode 310 will involve the following: a revisiting of Arrow season four and the events following that season’s finale episode; a confrontation with this season’s Big Bad on Legends — the name we’ve only heard whispered until now Mallus; some hot sex — something that has been in short supply on the Waverider thus far in season three; and Damien Darhk (Neil McDonough), because how can you do an episode about dark magic and not have Damien Darhk? More than anything, the episode promises to be scary as you know what — tonally it’s The Exorcist meets One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Demonic possession in a mental institution, what’s not to love?"
Klemmer does mention that “some hot sex” is in store for the hero’s episodes, so fans might just get to see more of Constantine - and his sexuality - than they bargained for when The CW series returns.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW: Victor Garber To Depart DC TV Series During Season 3

Disappointing news for Legends of Tomorrow fans today as it's been revealed that Victor Garber (Martin Stein) is set to leave The CW series during the show's third season. Hit the jump for further details.

Legends of Tomorrow returned to The CW last night but big changes are coming to the show very soon. Deadline reveals that Victor Garber has decided to depart the show during its third season so he can return to Broadway for the Hello, Dolly! revival which kicks off on January 20th. He'll be taking over a role currently filled by David Hyde Pierce of Frasier fame and will be joined by Bernadette Peters.

The DC TV show shoots in Vancouver and seeing as the actor will appear in this show six days a week, appearing in the series as Martin Stein is physically impossible. What does this mean for Firestorm? We don't know but there's no mention of Franz Drameh (Jax) deciding to leave the show at the same time.

However, the trade reveals that Garber's exit from Legends of Tomorrow has been planned for some time and that he'll be leaving at some point in the third season. There are no plans in place for him to return in future episodes but it's feasible he could return for a guest appearance somewhere down the line. How do you guys feel about this news? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section.

"Zari" - (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET) (TV-PG, LV) (HDTV)

OUTLAWS - When Sara (Caity Lotz) receives a distress call from their "befriended" agent at the Time Bureau, she learns that they have been tasked with going to the future to capture a rogue time traveler. Unfortunately, the Legends make things worse by trying to protect an outlaw named Zari (Tala Ashe), to hopefully lure in the time travelling assassin. Meanwhile, Stein (Victor Garber) tries to diagnose Amaya's (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) condition, but Nate (Nick Zano) discovers an unusual treatment that Amaya begrudgingly agrees to. Brandon Routh, Dominic Purcell and Franz Drameh also star. Mairzee Almas directed the episode written by James Eagan & Ray Utarnachitt (#303). Original airdate 10/24/2017.
