Chiefs end home playoff curse, advance to AFC title game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- If the Kansas City Chiefs could have designed the way they will enter the AFC Championship Game, they would have drawn up their 31-13 divisional-round win against the Indianapolis Colts.
The Chiefs didn't merely beat the Colts on Saturday, they used them as a launching pad. Kansas City will have a full head of steam going into next week's game against the winner of the Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots (1:05 p.m. ET, Sunday). The AFC title game will be in Kansas City for the first time.

"It's been a long time coming," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said. "It's something we feel as an organization we should have accomplished in recent history. Since Andy [Reid] came here, we've had a lot of shots. But finally we get a chance to win that AFC championship and to get to do it at home is so special for us."
The victory was a big confidence boost for the Chiefs, particularly on defense. They played their best defensive game of the season, forcing the Colts to go three plays and punt on each of their first four possessions.
The defense pitched a shutout until the Colts scored an offensive touchdown with less than six minutes left. The Colts scored their first touchdown on a blocked punt in the second quarter.
The Chiefs, who entered the game allowing 18 points a game at home, didn't allow a touchdown in their final regular-season game, a 35-3 win against the Oakland Raiders.
Kansas City made some recent defensive lineup changes that seem to be working. Third cornerback Charvarius Ward and safety Jordan Lucas, who is starting in place of the injured Eric Berry, have played well over the past couple of games.
The Chiefs had been plagued by defensive penalties most of the season but against the Colts they had just one -- a pass interference call against Ward with 41 seconds remaining. They had no defensive penalties against the Raiders.
"You could feel the energy all week," Reid said. "I think some of the young guys are maturing right in front of our eyes and playing well. We added a couple of guys in there. ... Everybody's taking up their game."
With the emphatic victory, the Chiefs buried their many playoff demons. They won at Arrowhead Stadium in the playoffs for the first time since January 1994. The streak included losses of one, two, three and four points.
The Chiefs had lost 11 of their previous 12 playoff games, with four of those defeats coming against the Colts.
They won't have that ugly history hanging over them heading into the AFC title game. They buried it early by rushing to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter.
<img class=" lazyloaded imageLoaded " data-image-container=".inline-photo">Patrick Mahomes completed 27 of 41 passes for 278 yards against the Colts. Jay Biggerstaff/USA TODAY Sports"It is great to get that talking point behind us," Hunt said. "There was a lot of noise obviously out there about it. The fans had a lot of anxiety about it. That's all now in the rearview mirror."
Against the Colts, the Chiefs had to survive some anxious moments having more to do with their playoff history -- they wasted a 28-point, third-quarter lead against the Colts five years ago and an 18-point, third-quarter lead against the Titans last season -- than the way they were playing.
But they finished strong this time. A Sammy Watkins fumble at the Kansas City 20 gave the Colts some apparent life late in the third quarter.
But Dee Ford forced Andrew Luck to fumble two plays later. The Chiefs recovered and were never again seriously threatened.
Every time the Colts did something positive -- their blocked punt, the Watkins fumble and their fourth-quarter touchdown -- the Chiefs answered. They scored a touchdown of their own after each of the Indianapolis TDs.
That kind of resilience had been in short supply for the Chiefs in the playoffs. When things started to go bad, they went bad in a big way.
But with some help from their defense, the Chiefs changed their postseason narrative, perhaps for good.
"All the way around, everybody contributed," Reid said. "It's important this time of year that you do that."

In the defense of the Chiefs defense, it was clear they were gassed. They were on the field for basically the entire first half so they had a rough night. That said, how the fuck does everyone see that they are that tired and yet the Chiefs sideline doesn't call a time out to give them a break? The Patriots ran what looked to be 2-3 plays over and over again the whole march down the field in OT. It was more of a sad reflection on the defense than on their offensive brilliance.

Sutton needs to go. If Reid steps up and says he needs to stay, then maybe it's time he goes too (although he's locked in contract wise IIRC). As brilliant as he may be, the same failures are following him around to each team he coaches as well.

Then there's the conversation that needs to happen about Eric Berry. Sounds like he's having surgery in the off season again so hopefully his condition improves but his impact on the field has been about the same as it's been off the field. There's a lot of money tied up in him though.

Hosuton needs to renegotiate and take a pay cut
Berry needs to renegotiate and take a pay cut.
Ford needs to be franchise tagged and traded.
Sorenson cut

There are 22 free agents as well. Chiefs need to resign a handful of them for vet minimums and hope they draft well.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chiefs took the first step toward assembling their 90-player offseason roster on Tuesday, signing nine of their practice squad players to reserve/future contracts.

Quarterback Chase Litton headlines the group of players signed to reserve/future deals. Several players who spent the season on the team's practice squad after standing out during training camp agreed to contracts. That group includes wide receiver Josh Crockett, linebacker Raymond Davison, offensive tackle Ryan Hunter and cornerback D'Montre Wade. The club also signed linebacker Robert McCray, who the Chiefs placed on the practice squad injured list in October.

Defensive tackle Joey Ivie, offensive tackle Pace Murphy and tight end David Wells also agreed to reserve/future contracts. The trio joined the practice squad as free agents during the season.

Only two players on the practice squad have yet to sign reserve/future contracts. Cornerback Chris Cooper and safety Leon McQuay remain unsigned. Practice squad contracts expire one week after a team completes its season. The contracts for Cooper and McQuay expire on Jan. 27.

REPORT: Chiefs Interested in Rex Ryan as DC After Firing Bob Sutton

The Kansas City Chiefs parted ways with defensive coordinator Bob Sutton on Tuesday following their heartbreaking loss in the AFC Championship Game.

Could they already have his replacement lined up?

The Chiefs have expressed interest in bringing aboard Rex Ryan to be the team's next defensive coordinator. The former Bills and Jets head coach is currently an analyst with ESPN, but perhaps the opportunity to coach for this Chiefs team could lure him back to coaching.

Quote:
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter

Here’s a name to watch for the now vacant Chiefs’ DC job, per sources: former Jets and Bills’ HC and current ESPN analyst Rex Ryan, who has been approached about other DC openings in recent seasons.

4,959

1:51 PM - Jan 22, 2019

Ryan is a defensive-minded coach and would be an ideal fit for the KC coaching vacancy, should they extend an offer to him. Ryan last coached in 2016 with the Bills, having spent two seasons as their head coach. Prior to that he was with the Jets for six seasons.

Bringing a defensive coordinator with experience as a head coach could be just what the Chiefs need in order to rapidly revamp their defensive unit, which ranked among the worst in the league in most categories.

Quote:
Cian @Cianaf

You can laugh at Rex Ryan the head coach all you like. Rex Ryan the DC with Andy Reid running the offense and Patrick Mahomes at QB is terrifying.

If Ryan takes over the defense in KC, then the team will certainly be trending upwards. Perhaps a Super Bowl trip in the 2019-20 season is a realistic target for the Chiefs if they can take the right steps this offseason on defense. Ryan would be an outstanding start.

Chiefs also let go of OLB coach Mike Smith. He has been hired by the Packers in the same role.

Maybe Chiefs can use that to their advantage.... tag and trade Ford to the Packers...

Kansas City Chiefs owe nearly $1M in back taxes for renovation

Chiefs' lead attorney says the team will likely appeal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —
A state panel in Missouri has ruled that the Kansas City Chiefs owe $930,000 in back tax plus interest on the decade-old Arrowhead Stadium renovation.
The Kansas City Star reports the NFL team argued that it didn't owe taxes on hundreds of items it bought to outfit the new stadium. But that argument was dismissed Tuesday in a ruling by the Administrative Hearing Commission.

The Chiefs' lead attorney says the team will likely appeal.
The case stems from a 2014 audit in which the Missouri Department of Revenue challenged sales tax exemptions on $23 million in purchases.

The state auditor found that items such as leotards for cheerleaders and weight-lifting equipment didn't fall under the public purpose of fixing the stadium.

Chiefs GM Leaves Door Open for Possible Kareem Hunt Return

The Kansas City Chiefs were the talk of the NFL for the majority of the season based off their strong and explosive play. However, those discussions turned into muttering about running back Kareem Hunt, as TMZ released a video showing him assaulting a woman in a Cleveland hotel.

Kansas City would act swiftly, releasing Hunt, despite the pivotal role he played on the offense. But could he make a return to the Chiefs?

During a conference call on Thursday, general manager Brett Veach said there are "always scenarios down the line" for a player in the shoes of Hunt to possibly make a return.

Quote:
Brooke Pryor @bepryor

Could Hunt come back?

Veach says he doesn’t speak in absolutes and it’s only been a few months since release, but “always scenarios down the line and guys have done everything asked to do through the league.”

Emphasizes again the priority is Hunt to focus on self improvement

128

12:59 PM - Feb 7, 2019

As Veach mentioned, Hunt is only a few months removed from his release. Veach likened his return to "being on the back burner." In other words, don't expect it anytime soon.

The team wants to see that Hunt bettered himself as a person and that he learned his lesson from his off-field incident.

Hunt holds the Chiefs near and dear to his heart, as report from Nate Taylor of The Athletic indicated that he pleaded with the organization to reconsider their decision to cut ties with him. It's quite possible that Hunt could use this as motivation to undergo the route of self-improvement to return to the team he loves.

While Veach's comments make it sound like that won't happen anytime soon, it appears there are other teams like the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles who are willing to take a chance on Hunt.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach Says Team is 'Excited' to Bring Back Dee Ford

Despite what happened in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told reporters Thursday that the team is "excited" to bring back outside linebacker Dee Ford.

That all but confirms Ford will return to the Chiefs next season

Quote:
Brooke Pryor @bepryor

Brett Veach praises Dee Ford’s season:

“We’re excited to bring him back”

259

12:42 PM - Feb 7, 2019

Ford, an unrestricted free agent, will potentially be franchised by Kansas City for the 2019 season. Ford would earn $15,591,000 for one year if that ends up being the case.

Ford told NFL.com that he wouldn't mind if the tag is placed on him next year. “That’s out of my control,” he said. “If it happens, it happens, and I don’t mind it.”

A few weeks ago, Ford told the Kansas City Star, "I would love to come back here."

The 27-year-old pass rusher is in line to be one of the best free agents on the market this offseason coming off of a tremendous 2018. In 15 games with the Chiefs, Ford tallied 55 tackles, 13 sacks, seven forced fumbles and a pass defensed. Pro Football Focus had him graded out as the eighth best outside rusher out of 107 qualifying players.

Ford's season ended in heartbreaking fashion when an offsides penalty called on him negated an interception that would've sent the Chiefs to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1970, but if he returns to KC next year, you know he'll be extra motivated to get revenge.

Patrick Mahomes' Contract Includes Laundry List of Prohibited Activities

You thought MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes was only banned from playing basketball? Not even close.

According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, Mahomes is prohibited from just about anything that doesn't involve throwing a football.

Yes, basketball is a prohibited activity in Patrick Mahomes' contract. So are:

Mahomes' contract details seem pretty standard. The 23-year-old quarterback is huge investment for the Chiefs and the last thing their franchise needs is losing the best QB they've had since Lenny Dawson because of a "hang gliding" accident.

It's bad enough that he puts ketchup on his mac and cheese.

Details of Mahomes' contract surfaced after a viral video of the young QB playing pickup basketball made it's rounds on social media. While it definitely looks like Mahomes can ball, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach wasn't quite as amused as everyone else.

Mahomes took the NFL by storm in 2018. In his first year as a starter, he threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns to only 12 interceptions. He led the league's No. 1 offense to 12-4 record, while being named NFL MVP, First Team All-Pro and earning a Pro Bowl nod.

If Mahomes continues on the path that he's on he will likely be the face of the league for the next decade and could possibly land the first $200 million contract in NFL history. For now, he'll have to stick to embarrassing opponents on the gridiron.

The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly hired away Brendan Daly from the New England Patriots to be their new defensive line coach, the same role he’s held under Bill Belichick in Foxborough for the last four years.
