Default Closing DIY

Cliffs:
Basically it takes up too much of my time and since my lease on the space was up last month, I have decided to not continue with the shop.

I will be looking for some land were I can build a house and shop for my personal use, now that the kids are gone.

How it started

I have always been working on my own cars, usually having 3 or 4 at a time. I would occasionally buy fix and sell a few every year and had 2 kids coming of driving age so they would need cars. My suburban 2+ car garage was getting cramped with tools and equipment and I couldn't fit more in it, let alone a full height lift. I needed a larger space.

The kids were just entering high school so I didn't want to move to a place with a larger garage or on a lot were I could build one. I started looking at places nearby to rent as a garage. I was finding most places that were 1500 ft were a minimum of $1000/mo and most were more. A lot of places would not allow automotive repairs on the premises.

Since the $1000/mo was more than I could really afford and since I wouldn't be using 100% of the time, I thought about sharing the spot with someone, maybe 50/50. It's always tough sharing with someone and I didn't have anyone that I felt I could trust 100%.

Then I thought about the DIY option and looked on the net for similar businesses. I read what other people were doing and came up with a game plan for mine. I leased a space, spent 2 months doing the remodel and equipment installation, then opened for business on September 2011.

It was slow to get business in and I found out it was sitting empty during the day, most DIY was evenings and weekends.

I interviewed a couple of guys who wanted to start a full service business in the shop and settled on one I thought was good. After a few years an independent Jeep shop opened at DIY. After about 2 years he outgrew the space allotted and relocated. In 2013 I was laid off from work and spent the next 2 years at the shop with some random contract work. During this time I realized that the full-service guy was not as honest with myself and customers and I felt he should be and we parted ways in 2014 and I started offering full service work along with the DIY.

I originally thought I could carve out a space in the shop for myself to do my own work and let the shop take care of itself. I found that I couldn't afford to give up some space for my work and don't have anytime to do any of my own repairs. This defeats the original purpose of having the shop.

The saddest part is the 4 people who make their lively hood here plus all the people that have part time income from working here. I have a lot of great customers who I enjoy seeing and a lot of good people I have met through the shop over the years.

I have been neglecting my family the last 6 years especially my wife. The kids are out of the house, we have the opportunity to do more travel and spend time together. It's just not the right fit for my life right now. Now it's time to find a place with an acre+, build a house and a large shop for myself. We have the opportunity to move so it might not be in the KC area, though we both enjoy it here.

I'm sorry to see it go, you saved my ass many times and I'll never forget that. Sounds like this is the right thing to do for yourself and the family. Is there anyone interested in taking over the shop on the original or modified premise or are you simply turning it back over to the leasing company free and clear?

The company i am leasing the space from does not want a mechanic shop in the space. While i have options that i could exercise if i chose to keep the business i would not be able to transfer those options to a new owner.

The equipment is being sold and i have buyers for most of it.

The toughest part are the people who are making most or all of their living at the shop.

Sorry to hear of this. I know that you offered a great space and services to many different members over the years who needed help, work done, or space and tools to do it in.

I am glad to hear you were able to assess this and your current quality of life and make the right decision for you and yours. Those who depend on the space and you for their livelihood will certainly land on their feet if they have the skills and determination to do so.

I wish you the best in finding a new place for yourself and certainly do take some time to enjoy time with your wife and the rewards of your labor.

You're welcome. I could care less about a man's politics or beliefs when it comes to matter of family and livelihood. Let us know how things pan out for you. Do something for yourself.

I took this photo a few weeks ago. I am going to miss meeting a lot of the great people I have had in here over the years.

I'm sad to see you go too, especially after helping out quite a bit on my car. But like others have said, I completely understand packing it in so you can actually go have a life. Best of luck winding it all down.

I'm both sad to hear this, and happy for you at the same time David. It sounds like a new chapter for you in life will begin. I'm sad because, as Greg said, you've saved my ass and always done top quality work no matter the job and you've always kept your word.

The KC Metro is losing one of the best repair shops. I don't even remotely agree with you politics-wise, but your integrity is something I've never questioned and you've always been a huge help.

Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

I just saw this, sorry to hear, but looks like you made the right decision. I wish I didnt live so far away, as I could have used your shop many times. Good Luck in what you do, I always enjoyed some of your shop posts.

Just saw this too. Very bummed. Helped my brother and I with various automotive tasks through out the years. Super nice and awesome to deal with too. But I understand fully and happy for your future plans
