OnePlus 5T Sandstone Edition Leaks With A White Backplate

OnePlus had more or less confirmed that the Sandstone Edition OnePlus 5T will be announced tomorrow in China, and the device has just surfaced on JD.com (JingDong Mall), it seems. JD.com is one of the largest online shops in China, and an 8GB RAM variant of the phone surfaced on JD.com ahead of its announcement. As you can see, this device will resemble the Star Wars Edition OnePlus 5T, though it won’t have Star Wars branding on it.

The Star Wars OnePlus 5T edition arrived with a white-colored back, and a Sandstone finish back there, and the Sandstone Edition OnePlus 5T will ship with that very same finish, it seems. The provided images indicate that the Sandstone Edition OnePlus 5T will sport a white back, so we’re wondering if the company will release a black variant at all. Still, the front side of the device will be black-colored, though it would be nice of the company to give its users some options. For those of you who are unaware, the company also released the Lava Red variant of the OnePlus 5T in China, and that version may start hitting more markets in the near future as well. The OnePlus 3, 3T and 5 did not sport a Sandstone finish on their back sides, not a single variant of those devices did, though the company has decided to release the Star Wars Edition OnePlus 5T with a Sandstone back, and a new variant is coming as well. It seems like OnePlus is trying to cater to its consumers, as many of them are reminiscent of the OnePlus One and 2, both of which shipped with a Sandstone back finish. There’s probably a good reason for it as well, as the regular OnePlus 5T is quite slippery, and the same was the case with the OnePlus 3, 3T and 5 as well.

As already mentioned, this variant of the phone will be announced in China tomorrow, though the device is expected to hit more markets in the near future as well, a global launch will probably follow in the near future as well. This variant of the device will probably cost as much as a regular 8GB RAM model, and it will have the same specs as the regular OnePlus 5T 8GB RAM variant as well. It seems like we won’t be getting the 6GB RAM Sandstone Edition OnePlus 5T, at least according to JD.com, but who knows, it is still possible that OnePlus may opt to announce a more affordable variant of the phone as well.

OnePlus adds iPhone X-style gesture controls in latest Oreo beta

One Plus phone Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Gesture controls without clear navigation bars aren’t just for the iPhone X. Some Android smartphones let users save screen real estate by using home button gestures, and now OnePlus’ newest Oreo beta build for the OnePlus 5T includes a feature that disables the navigation bar and instead prioritizes gestures. We haven’t had a chance to test this yet, but Reddit user MisterMrMister uploaded a video of the gesture controls in action.
You can see that the phone’s navigation bar is missing, but the user is still able to pull up different pages, toggle between windows, and exit apps.

MisterMrMister says, “The gesture for going home is pretty smooth and responsive, including going to the recent app overview.” The user continues to note that the back button gesture is a “hit or miss for me right now. Sometimes I seem to ‘miss’ the right area to activate it.”
Like we learned with the iPhone X, gestures take time to get used to, although most people seemed to adjust pretty quickly after losing their dedicated home button. Maybe this is the start of the end of not only buttons, but also nav bars.

A rumor started making the rounds that OnePlus was working on a sequel to the affordable OnePlus X. If you don’t remember, that was a pretty beautiful ceramic-clad phone that packed a big punch for its modest price tag.

For one reason or another, OnePlus has yet to revisit that line, and if you were hoping that rumors of a potential OnePlus X2 were accurate, we’re here to tell you to curb your enthusiasm. Company figurehead Carl Pei went to Twitter to categorically deny that the OnePlus X2 is real.
His initial damnation was subtle, but he later followed up with a more wordy plea for people to stop playing around with fake news. Yes, we use the term jokingly and loosely thanks to it being the preferred mantra of America’s 45th president (the irony of which we just won’t get into at this time), but fake news is bad. It’s usually harmless in these particular circumstances, though, where the consequence is little more than disappointment for diehard OnePlus fans who were hoping to find another way to shell out cash for a smartphone this year.
Does that mean there will never be a OnePlus X2? No one knows, not even OnePlus, perhaps. Maybe we’ll get a different phone with a different name that fulfills the same purpose. What we can tell you is that OnePlus was serious when they said they wanted to focus on creating one great smartphone every year, and so we’d suggest not holding your breath for it if you’re in need of a new smartphone in 2018.
