You should start with three basic discs. Putter, Mid Range and a Driver. Contrary to popular belief, buying a super fast distance driver won't make you throw further!

As far as a basic starter set - Innova Aviar is the most common putter, Roc and Buzzz are popular mid range discs, get a lower speed driver, something like leopard or teebird. There is a ton of variety out there - don't be overwhelmed. Just go to a shop and ask to help. The disc golf community is awesome - everyone just wants to have fun.

Same for real golf. I tend to tee off with my 3 wood as much as my driver. I find a lot of times I hit it further off the tee with the 3 wood vs the fat head driver.

The similarities between the two sports are abundant. However disc golf costs $30 to start and is typically free at each park! And disc golf is more of a workout than shooting 18 holes with a cart.

craigslist or the woods lol. Sometimes I go to SMP and walk through the grass and woods and find discs. Also craigslist usually has discs for real cheap.

Check this out, especially if you're new:

Thread revival. Much to my embarrassment, I'm becoming a disc golfer. Family time constraints has prevented regular golf activities, in lieu of no- tee time "free" 80 minute rounds. Thus far, I have accumulated about 14 different discs, yet I still suck. Still fun, though. So, if anyone is up for some nap time disc golf at SMP (1:00-2:00), let me know. Bring your A game and teach me something.

One thing I learned. It's a combo of finesse and power, but more emphasis on finesse. Make sure as you're releasing the disc, you're not angling it up or down. Most people flex their wrist up and it just goes straight up with no distance.

I'm not "that" awful (relatively speaking) once inside 150 ft. I attribute that to the countless hours I've spent playing Frisbee with my dogs. What sucks are my drives. I can stand there flat footed, twist, and throw it 200-250 ft. But if I run up, yell, scream, and try and rip the disc down the fairway, it goes....200-250 ft. It's like a magic wall of air that knocks my disc out of the sky. Clearly the extra energy is not making it to the disc, so my form is all wrong. On occasion, something happens and everything is in sync and I'll get one out there a little over 300 ft, but that's not the norm. I'll get it figured out one day.

250' for a beginner is fine.
DG is Kansas can suck because of the wind, get used to your disc going all over the place if you are out in the open. I never really had to use a firebird until I moved to KS.
