Default C-17 Lands At Wrong Airport

Quote:
The U.S. Air Force has yet to explain how a massive C-17 military cargo plane ended up landing at the wrong airport Friday.

The plane bound for MacDill Air Force Base on the southern tip of Tampa accidently landed at the tiny Peter O. Knight Airport in the middle of homes on Davis Islands.

Peter O. Knight is approximately four miles north of MacDill but significantly smaller in size.Witnesses and nearby homeowners near the airport, when the plane landed, say they could hardly believe their eyes and feared the aircraft may crashthrough the end of the small runway and end up in Tampa Bay.

I'd guess offload any cargo and or fuel, and run it out of there on fumes to keep weight down.

One of these huge motherfuckers took off from the downtown airport when I still lived at the end of the runway essentially. Looked out my window when my building started rumbling. It was a trip. Loudest fucking thing ever. I swear I felt the heat from the plane through my window, it was nuts.

It may be able to take off, just might be tight.

It kind of reminds me of when we got deverted in a large storm and had to land in Agusta. Coming from LAX to ATL so you can imagine the huge plane I was on. It was hilarious, they had to jump this truck with stairs tall enough to reach because they hadnt used it so long. Everything else was a CRJ or a Lear. The plane was bigger than the terminal.

From what I understand, it wasn't an accidental landing. There was a reason behind why it landed here.

i wouldn't be surprised if this is a case of poor reporting and it was just an emergency landing.

Those things are built to land on short runways and take off on them as well. Amazing aircraft

Yup, was kinda wondering why news crews and everyone showed up to film it take off. Nobody was like "hey guys these things do this sort of thing all the time no sweat..."

Seems logical. Im sure in combat situations you dont always have the choice of runways, might have to land on something smaller or improvised.

From what I read the pilots had been flying for an insanely long time (I want to say from Afghanistan?) and the airport they needed to land at was only a few miles away from this one and lined up the same way. It was a MUCH longer runway, but if you fixate on one target you can completely miss the other, especially when you consider all of the checks and lists they'd have to go through to make sure their plane is ready to land on top of that.

Government vehicles showed up almost immediately to unload the plane. Once in light mode it shouldn't have had any trouble taking off. Like Buford said, those things are designed to land in much worse areas.

That take off was insane to watch. I wonder how many people were consulted prior to that.

Depending on their flight route, C17/C130 pilots practice short take offs all the time on long runs ways, same with short landings. It's part of their quarterly training requirements as well.

Those engines have soooooo much power, it is ridiculous!

Essentially it is powered by 4 F16 engines... right?
