Default Waddell & Reed KC Marathon/Half/5k

I was just curious if anyone else was doing this on Oct 17? I am going to walk my fat ass 13.1 miles and thought I may be keep an eye out for someone else from the KCSR crew. It is a good time if you have never done it. I took dead last in my age group (but did finish) a few years back and still had a blast.

Not doing it this year, but I ran the half a few years back. It was a blast, I highly recommend it to anyone that is on the fence.

http://www.sportkc.org/marathon/

They have a Marathon, Marathon Relay, Half Marathon, 5k, and some stuff for kids. It is a good time. I am about the furthest thing from a runner that you will find (I am a big guy and walk it), but still find it fun. You get 6 hours, so if you can do the distance, the time isn't a big deal.

The pilgrim pacer in November is a fun one too. I will be out of town or would do that again. http://www.psychowyco.com/pilgrimpacerrun/

The two are very different runs though. The KC Marathon has a TON of people, they have bands, beer, bbq afterwards, and you run through a lot of neat parts of town when they are basically deserted (Crown center, plaza, westport, by the fed reserve, P&L). There are a lot of spectators. The PP is a smaller one, but a lot of fun.

Cool. Get out early and enjoy the show.

The last time I did this was 2012. IIRC the 5k started at the same time as the marathon and half (this year it starts a half hour later). It was a run out, turn around, and come back race. We were coming up on the 4 mile mark and the lady next to me says how long this run was taking and asked how soon until the turn around for the 5k. I had a good laugh about it.

Ha! Hopefully that doesn't happen to me... Sounds like something I'd do.

I just registered! See ya there, man

Well, had a great time. They changed up the course a little from last time. It is a little easier. The people of KC, LEOs, volunteers, etc. really make it a good time. I know it was a busy weekend with the nascar and Royals, but a lot of people still came out.

I'm signed up for a few events this year, so far. I am sure I'll sign up for this one again once it gets closer.

I was having a few beers last night and the wife signed us up for it - I should learn not to consent to stuff like that. Booked the hotel today. It was a blast last year...no matter how slow I am.

Now I just need to rope some friends in.

One of my friends was at about a 7:30/mile, I was at about the 8 minute mark, and a friend and his wife were closer to the 9 minute mark. It's just fun to get out and be active...

the beer tickets and medal are also cool

I am significantly slower than that, but at 6'3'' and 300lbs+, I am not out to win any of these (though if they had a weight class...I may). Signing up a little earlier this year, I think I am going to try to drop a few lbs and see if I can improve some with a little training. I will still walk a majority of it I am sure, but after doing 3 with no prep, I think I have proven the "I can do it" part.

The encouragement that people offer along the way is just unreal. That and the neat route really makes it a good time. Oh, and like you said, the beer, medal, and BBQ.

Yep! I love the signs people make for their family/friends as you run along. there are usually some pretty funny ones. All of the events I've been to seem to be like that. Everyone is encouraging and in a good mood; it's a great atmosphere.
