Default Project Honda Aquatrax F12x

After an incident earlier in the season, the stock turbo on my ski seized up. It seized 15mins into a ride on the water at full throttle and boost. Consequently, it took out all of the seals on the cold and hot sides of the turbo and spit oil everywhere. Since this turbo is a proprietary turbo built by IHI for Honda, it is a little on the pricy side from Honda, to the tune of $2400 at cost and cannot be rebuilt. There are not readily available bearing or seals. So, being the gear head I am, I decided lets go bigger. H20Xtreme is a shop is Miami that races Honda skis and the offer a larger (twice the cfm) turbo at a significantly lower price than OEM. They machine the exhaust housing to fit a larger IHI turbo. To make things a little more complicated, the exhaust housing is water cooled to keep heat down in the hull. So I had to keep the smallish exhaust housing and just have it machined out.

The stock turbo. It is a tiny little thing.

Cast Iron is tought to keep rust free in a wet environment.

It's a tiny little thing lol.

Here you can see the water cooled hot side.

A comparison of old vs/ new.

All ready to go with new gaskets.

Midway through install

All buttoned up.

I took it out for a shake down run. It was only running 50-51 @ 5-6lbs of boost. Stock boost is 12-13lbs. No bueno. It came up on boost no problem, came up on plane and just hit a brick wall. The good news is, with the stock turbo, 5lbs would yield high 30's to low 40's mph. So we are definitely making more power. I did some investigating and the stock boost controller solenoid was not working at all. It was stuck closed. I ordered a new solenoid that should be here today. I also have a Macsboost module that raises the boost to 16lbs that I may plug in depending on how well it runs with the new turbo. I have a feeling I am going to need more prop. Stock rev limiter is around 6500-6600. I was close to this before the bigger turbo with just the module.

So, she sits in the garage ready for her shake down run tom morning.

I love jet ski projects and have been reading up on them a lot lately. I love the Honda turbos. Boost on such a small thing on the water is fantastic! What lake do you ride on? What GPS do you have?

Can't wait for updates!

This is so cool, very anxious to hear how she performs on full boost. I've been very interested in skis lately and an contemplating a purchase next year or the year after. I'm still learning a lot about the models, sea doo seems to make some very nice skis, but being the gear head that I am I don't mind buying an "underdog" and slapping a few parts on it to smoke a newer more powerful model.

Shake down run went well. Boost spiked to 19psi and then settle down to 13psi. It ran a steady 13psi for the rest of the day. I was getting 60-62 on the dream-o-meter with the seat on. I took the rear seat off thinking it may be starving for air and it ran 70-71 on the dream-o-meter. I have to figure out how to get more air under the seat I didn't plug the Macsboost module. I may get some c16 and try it this week. Overall a good day.

So with the Turbo breathing adequately, you're hitting 70 MPH on the stock prop? That seems very impressive. Most top performing brand new skis hit just north of 60 correct?

Sorry, in my haste to type this up, I forgot to add these are the dream-o-meter numbers. I am combing through the gps numbers now to get gps results.

GPS logs show 58.7mph max speed. Factoring in the chop, that sounds pretty reasonable. Now time to up the boost.

At Hillsdale? I bet with that bigger turbo you are really sucking down the fuel. My dads Yamaha SHO with the supercharger drinksssss fuel stock. Can't imagine throwing more boost at it.

Pretty damn awesome, my family has a newer Seedoo RXP 255 and that thing is scary fast, but it will hit 70mph and go no further.

The RXP's are great in chop. I need glass to go fast on mine. I may upgrade to a Solas grate and 17/29 to help with chop.

That is badass. I got a chance to ride a Yamaha FZR with an upgraded blower, intercooler, flash, etc. he's been 78.7 MPH according to GPS. It was an animal compared to rentals I've been on.

I took the ski out this past weekend for the last ride of the season. There were literally 5 boats on the entire lake. The water was smooth as glass and a water temp of 72. It pulled hard. I didn't have my GPS with me, but I was seeing 6000-6100 rpm all morning long. This is on the bone stock ski with only the upgraded turbo. I never did plug the Macsboost module in. This weekend it is going back into storage unless one of the two potential buyers I have takes it off my hands.

These seadoos are about half the weight on mine and 2-3ft shorter. I also had 16gals of fuel on board when I did the last run. My couch tips the scales around 950lbs.
