Default 74 Nova build

I've had this car sitting around for several years now, but work, getting married, building other cars, and getting deployed always seemed to take a priority.

So now I decided FUCK IT. I'm going to put this bitch together. I will have this thing running and complete by June, no excuses. I don't take many photos when I'm building something, but I'll go ahead and post up what I've got, and I'll try my best to update over the next few weeks as it comes together.

How it started: I bought it for $800 while I was in Texas for AIT with the Army.

Tearing it down:

The front subframe was trashed in a stump-jumping crash of some kind... So instead of just buying a new subframe, I decided to buy an entirely different 74 Nova for $500 for a parts car.

Ready for transplant

Aaadn together again:

Sourced a 600hp 12.5:1 BBC (~468ci) from a racing boat. A wide ratio M21 from a 69 Corvette. Brakes from an 02 Camaro SS. Mini-tubbed it. And put in an 8 point cage.

Ignore my shitty welding.

The front suspension is all together with QA1 coilovers, (550lb springs) Hotchkis tubular control arms, and adjustable front sway bar. I have the rearend off getting a ladder bar set up welded on.

While the rearend is gone I decided to rebuild the engine, and my dad stopped by to help me fire it off today. He's a wizard with timing and tuning a carb.

video is uploading currently.

This nova is cleeean. Besides the floors it looks like a fight that is winnable. I hate rust on old vehicles. It never seems to go away and rears its ugly face in the worst spots. Mine happens to be floor pans on my M38 Willy's jeep.

It wouldn't upload to YouTube from my phone, so a FB link will have to suffice for now.

QA1 coilovers and tubular control arms installed with a Hotchkis swaybar.

The wiring harness was a fucking mess from the previous owner.

Seems legit...

I just clipped out what I needed, and installed a Painless universal hot rod harness today... Totally worth the money.

I'm drunk and I'm bored. Time to post an update.

Interior starting to come together.

Braking system complete

Not a big fan of chrome, but this heater core housing came up on Craigslist for cheap. Needed to switch from SBC to BBC anyway.

Clearance in the front for 245/60/15 isn't too bad... I want more, but I dont know if I can fit more.

Engine ready to go: This is build #3. I decided to switch it from race gas to E85, so I pulled it apart again.

Engine in:

M-22 back from the shop... ready for 700+ horses. Not that I'll be making anything close to that for the first couple of years. But since I was spending the money, might as well plan for the future.

Fuel system starting to come together. The pump is definitely going to be the weak point. It'll probably be the first thing to get upgraded... Then a clutch... then a driveshaft... One thing at a time.

Any suggestions on a better way to mount this pump/filter?

It's going to be a low motherfucker. Even with 550 pound springs here's where it sits with the coilovers bottomed out. I'll bring it up a couple inches... I was just playing around with this alignment.

All done... except the exhaust which is on it's way.

Pulled it out for her first bath on over 20 years.

For now. I haven't decided yet, and if I do change it, I'm not sure what I'd do with it.... Satin green maybe? It'll never be pretty no matter what color it is.

Couple of updates:

1: First day at the track, the slicks got into the quarter. I didn't realize how much bondo there was in there. Time to grind it all out and re-skin it with some good metal.

2: Ditching the wrinkle-walls for some ET Streets.

3: After the second track day I broke a driveshaft, and over-revved the piss out of the motor. The valve springs are close to 20 years old, so they gave way in force.

Had to reenforce the valve spring compressor quite a bit. I broke 2 of these fuckers before I decided to Frankenstein one out of the broken bits.

New top-end rebuild complete:

Hopefully it will be ready to go in a few weeks. I have a few more upgrades for this winter before getting it back into the fight this Spring.

To much squat, and I need to narrow the rear end.

edit: misunderstood your question. I'm guessing you're asking about an ET: On that I have no idea. Grudge 1/8th mile racing with just a tree. No timeslips.

Looking good. I even like the rallys, you know they make 15x4 rallys that would go well on the front.

Have you considered doing something with those bumpers? I like the car and project but the bumpers on those things are horrible.
