Default Best/Quickest AWD car <$50k

In the market for a new DD. Times like these I wish I didn't live in Colorado so I could do something like a slightly used stingray and throw a procharger on it. Since I am in CO I need to have AWD. I have test drove a couple different cars but am very undecided right now. I'd be open to a used car but it would have to hit on a lot of notes and would need probably less than 10k miles.

I have looked at an Audi S3, S4, TTS, M235i xDrive. The S4 for 2017 goes turbo and loses the manual. The TTS and S3 essentially have the same drivetrain. I thought the M235 was lacking somewhat in the features for its price range.

I would even enjoy an STI or Focus RS but its a step back from an Audi/BMW.

Thoughts?

Shame your budget isn't just a shade higher, E63 4 matic would be my choice. Some nice choices on the market.

No thoughts on maybe a SRT8 Jeep? 470hp, AWD, decently comfy, spacious, launch control, hauls ass. Only downside is MPG. I think it would be a great choice for living in CO.

If you can wait just a couple of months, the M240 with the more powerful 332hp and 369 ft/lb B58 motor will be out. The current M235x does high 12s/low 13s stock. Guys with JB4 tunes, downpipe, and meth are running lower 12s, some in the 11s in their M235xs. The B58 should prove to be a bit quicker stock and with mods.

OR you can pick up an in stock M235x at a very highly discounted rate which is probably the way I'd go because the B58 is a fairly new motor and uses a lot of new and somewhat scary tech (from a German perspective). The larger things that have changed on the B58 motor vs the N55 motor are:

1) Water/air intercooler that's built into the intake manifold. No more simple air to air intercooling.

2) The W/I intercooler has it's own dedicated cooling system and pump. Ummm...BMW's history with cooling systems isn't great.

3) The turbo has it's own dedicated cooling system and pump. See above.

4) The timing chain is now on the back side of the motor. BMW hasn't had good luck in the past with this arrangement.

5) The oil filter is now tucked under the intake manifold and not easily accessible like it's been forever. If you're not a DIYer then this is no big deal.

6) The thermostat is now electric.

The N55 in the 2014-2016 M235 has been around for quite some time and the bugs have been worked out over the past 6 years or so. It's quite a reliable motor and parts are actually cheap for it in comparison to the prior twin turbo N54. A $300 Stage 1 tune will gain you around 40whp/50wtq and should put 0-60s in the M235x in the low 4s (stock is around 4.4).

BMW's sale aren't great right now, especially on the 2 series. You should be able to pick up a new in stock 2016 M235x for a few grand under invoice. When I bought my M235 6MT back in December, Baron was offering me any of their in stock M235x's at $7K off MSRP. I wanted what I wanted though and had to order thus I only got a few grand off MSRP. The 8AT in the M235 is pretty amazing, dare I say quicker shifting (up and down) than the Lexus ISFs I had been researching to buy for months.

With that said, I've thoroughly enjoyed my M235 so far. It's the right size for me and my kids love it. It's so much nicer than everything else I've ever driven/owned. When you drive it and look in it and under it, you can tell it was designed and engineered by people that love to drive. If they would had made a M235x with a 6MT, I may have gotten that one.

The B58 has been in the 3 series for about a year now and hopefully that has given them time to figure out some of the bugs. Bugs aside, the B58 is very impressive even in stock form. 340i stock put down 335 whp and with JB4, intake and meth it was putting down 450whp. Performance is definitely better than the N55, but like Dave mentioned, they made some odd changes that might lead to headaches down the road.

Had all 3 happen to me, some more than once.

I would get a new WRX, EVO X or 335ix. The 2015/16 WRXs are actually a fucking BLAST. My dad and my cousin both have 2016's with the CVTs and I had a lot of fun driving both completely bone stock. Well my dad's has the SPT package with a TCU flash from Subaru or something. He's about to get it dyno tuned with a downpipe too so I'll be super excited to see him next and drive it again.

I love my STI but in hindsight I'm kind of wishing I would have saved money and got another WRX since I have a garage now to help prevent theft, or saved up and sourced a legit EVO. I'm constantly freaking out about the car getting stolen, vandalized, hit, etc. and it's a shitty $13k car.

Your other option which is the option I wish I would have gone.. is get a modest daily driver and a badass, fun project car. I already have my Rav4 (still do) and kind of wish I would have just bought a badass car to throw in the garage and build, and keep driving my Yoda everyday. You could easily set aside $10-20k/each and get a nice DD and an awesome project car.
Tell you dad to have fun with a cracked ringland.

I absolutely LOVE my Jeep SRT. It is the second one I have owned. They really make a fantastic daily driver (especially with a blower).

My recommendation would be to only look at 2014 and newer!

I spend a lot of time on the FA20DIT forums of NASIOC and I can't say that I've ever heard of a TCU "tune" unless some ecutek tuner has figured out something. With that said, your old man should be careful with a tuned and DP CVT WRX. Those trannies can't hold much power and they're around $7000 to replace.

The FA20DIT isn't the ringland destroyer or rod bearing eater like the EJ, but rather it likes to send rods through blocks when pushed a but hard, usually on E85 or a very aggressive tune. Overall though, it's probably a better motor than the EJ. Lots of tuned FA20s have been lost over the past year and the verdict is still out on what it can safety handle.

Ding Ding Ding!!! It wasn't the tune am almost positive it was a clogged injector or improperly installed fuel system. Ran the car with the same tune for 100k mile on old block, was also tuned by Tim bailey who is a world renowned subie tuner and basically created all of the OTS Cobb tunes.

I haven't driven one yet, but those things look badass and surely move out well too.

Would totally rock one if it drove well and I had the budget.

They do seem like badass cars though. Still not as cool as the old TBSS. Cause LSx
One redeeming quality does not a good vehicle make. That was literally the only thing they had going for them IMO.

+1 for the '14+ SRT8. Really can't imagine a better vehicle in Denver for the money, and utility.

I'd raise the budget 10% or so and get a CPO 13/14 S6.

It's a slow shifting auto with no FI. Its decently quick but am getting a little bored and would like a step up.

Im not sure I could find one closer to 50k with less than 10-15k miles on it. How reliable are the 2014+ with a procharger? It would be nice to have for towing the snowmobile(rely on my friends for that currently) and general offroad purposes.

That's not a bad idea, if I could find one with low enough miles and wait a little longer that would be a pretty sweet solution.

Depending on the route I go would depend on the level I modify the car, but I have never owned a car I havent at least moderately modified. Leasing something new wouldnt be a bad idea but past wheels/tires I don't think you can do much to a leased vehicle. I have never leased before so I may be wrong. The car i owned before the infinity was a brand new 2014 wrx and it was stage 2 with 1200 miles on it. I regret getting rid of that car but I sold it after 1 year for more than I paid new for it. If I ended up buying a STI/EVO/Focus RS I would probably jump into modifications pretty quick.
